This is Myles:
Someone once claimed that I shouldn't call him a dog, so I had Myles bite 'em. Best thing about a dog this big is he can carry me to the caches.

Just to be clear: it's a SOUTHERN California thing.

Sounds good. there's a chance that the key may eventually get lost. I think the combination lock probably would work out better. You could get the combination by going to some other cache, by solving a puzzle, or some other means.
BTW, is there a place for a padlock on ammo cans?

Hey. My job is even on-topic. I'm an engineer and I build satellites.

maybe a checksum should be included so one could tell if the found answer was right.

Geochaching reality show:
Group of six first-time cachers seek a 5/5 cache. Gotta find four totally incompatible and inept city-folks. Two of the group are plants who cause havoc at various points along the journey.

Mornings 5:30 to 6:30
Afternoons 3:30 to 4:30
I listened in to the morning guys on "charlie" this week. quite a talkative bunch. something about wanting to learn to machine his own fountain pens. there's a guy who needs a new hobby.
charlie fades out south of san jose. 146.64 is best all-around. good luck with your PL board.

I'll give you a call one of these days at commute time. Programmed that repeater that you mentioned. I can usually be found on 145.23 (100PL) or 146.64 (100pl?)

Thanks for the tip! That got it done.
I was going through the "Landmarks" menu, not the setup menu.

Having loaded lots of waypoints via computer, there's now too many to deal with and I'd like to get rid of them all and start fresh.
I can't seem to find a menu item for wiping out the entire WP memory. Am I missing something? Tell me I don't have to go and delete them one at a time...

I commute Gilroy to palo alto daily. I have both a dual-band HAM and CB in the car. If something is really backed up, the "trucker channel" (17 around here) is the place to go for information. If you want someone to chat with as you drive, either of the HAM bands is a good place. There are a couple of repeaters that become active during commute times. Traffic reports may be part of these and questions about traffic conditions are surely a common part of the conversations. You just have to break into the conversation and introduce yourself and then you're part of the gang.
Also, there is a CB'er group here that commutes from los banos to san jose area. They operate on a channel (one) separate from the truckers and will run off anyone who uses foul language. Generally a fun and informative group. Perhaps you could help to start such a CB commuter group in your own area.
When you get your license, give me a call.

I got there at about 1625h on friday. Don't know what time the coordinates were posted, but i think maybe a dozen or so others beat me to it. Met two groups hiking out as I was hiking in. Lots of kids in tow.
So who got there first? Whaddya get? What time were you there?

Be prepared. Take one or more of these items with you:
Dog
Whistle or electronic noise-maker
Firearm (get a permit)
Mace or Pepper Spray (or blend)
Keys carried as mentioned above
Cell phone (note that it may not work when doing backcountry caches)
Another cacher
Cane or walking stick (good weapon)

I just mean that, decoding in the field - if you do it enough times - you might start to recognize whole words and then be able to just read the stuff.

That sounds pretty cool! I went to the hobby shop at lunch today and found the polymer clay. Gotta get some big new erasers and then I'll give it a try. Thanks for the instructions. I'm already dreaming up other uses for this technology.

Never worry about leaving your GPS behind again.
Applied Digital Solutions, a technologydevelopment company, yesterday said it has
created and successfully field-tested a prototype of
a GPS implant for humans.
The dimensions of this initial "personal location
device," or PLD, prototype are said to be 2.5
inches in diameter by 0.5 inches in depth, roughly
the size of a pacemaker. Once inserted into a
human, the device can be tracked by Global
Positioning Satellite technology and the
information relayed wirelessly to the Internet,
where an individual's location, movements and
vital signs can be stored in a database for future
reference. [/quote

... or is UTM always on its own datum???
I got a fancy new map from my local state park today and was pleased to see UTM grids on the map.
Read all of the legend bits and nowhere did it say what map datum they were using. Got to thinking that maybe UTM is always the same and datum is just part of it.
Comments?
