  1. Anything on Tanegashima? I'll be there for a week soon.
  2. All you map freaks (I'm one too) should check out the geocaching National Map Corps Forum Your map mania can have a higher purpose.
  3. Really? You can try it, but I don't think that most cachers will want to go into a place like that!
  4. That's a monster, all right... a monster maintenance nightmare. Cool if they can keep it running smoothly, though.
  5. I used to cover my unit with plastic, but not any more!
  6. Was the fire dept able to use your latitude/longitude information to locate you? I know that some jurisdictions can do this and some seem unable to do it.
  7. Also make sure that your 315 has the latest firmware. It's available online from Magellan. Works lots better with the newer firmware.
  8. That does it. I'm not letting my kids out of the house during daytime any more. I just found out that if they stare directly at the SUN, that they will damage their eyes. Edit: by the way, i wish that i could find one for $2. Those things are pretty neat and one of the best ways to torture your cat. they'll chase that beam around for hours.
  9. If they don't sign the logbook, then they cannot log... is this not one of the basic principles? If you toss the logbook down to them and they sign it, then they can log. Edit:typo
  10. Just look at this non-GC-relevant topic now up over 1000 pages! At least we try here.
  11. For the GLORY! It adds a 'racing' element to the game. Because 'there can be only one' First choice of trade items.
  12. I'm thinking that it would be slick if this site could allow input of survey markers not listed in the NGS database... then searches would show the NGS marks PLUS those found and input by geocachers. Could it work?
  13. UTM is a great system (more useful than lat/long in my opinion). You'll run into trouble on any sort of multi- or puzzle- type caches. Get good at switching back and forth.
  14. From http://calif.geocoin.net Q: I missed the Dec. 15, 2003 ordering deadline. Is there anyway to still order this Geocoin? A: To place an order, there must be a minimum order of 250. So if you missed the ordering deadline, email me (at: Bobkat92@AOL.Com) indicating how many Geocoins you want. If I get email indications for another 250 Geocoins, I will place another order in the late Spring or early Summer of 2004.
  15. Two good ones that I did while in L.A. a year or so ago: Batman's Bat Cave - just a neat place to see for an old Batman fan. Use Mapquest or some such to find the RIGHT road to get there. The logs are full of folks who came from the wrong direction. Hollywood Reservoir - still can't believe that this is right in the middle of Hollywood.
  16. I'm pondering my first hide - a traditional cache less than 1/4 mile from good parking. Dirt road and single-track trail. Upon getting close to the coordinates the finder must cross a creek. Maximum depth is three to four feet depending on how late in the summer. Water is moving, but not so that one could get swept away. Width of creek is about 12 feet. Cache on the far side within 20 feet of the creek. Sound like fun? What terrain rating should it have? Other suggestions?
  17. I hope to find something that my 4-year-old daughter thinks is cool. This keeps her in the game. I used to leave a lot of chem lights. Then I ran out of those. Mini-caribiners were my next trade item. I did just see a place that had a good deal on some old buffalo nickels. Think I might pick up 20 or so to leave for trade items. Those would be cool, huh? Otherwise I just keep an eye out for useful things that don't cost a bunch: tape measures, flashlights, camping items. Did you know Walmart has $5 wristwatches?
  18. I recently found a California Geocoin.
  19. I just found one of these and now am wondering if there are to be more new ones made available soon.
  20. This is a slick idea. It sure would beat popping to the surface to get a bearing. I think that I'd want the line to be on some sort of reel, though. I've never liked dealing with lots of loose rope underwater. As for geocaching, it makes perfect sense to use such a method for finding or planting a cache. I use a Magellan 315 and it shows GOTO information based on the last time it had a signal. Question: How near the surface does the antenna need to be to get a signal? Feet? Inches? or does it actually need to be AT the surface? The reason is that I was thinking of a small lift bag to help with the deployment, but would lift probably to a foot below the surface.
