  1. there is a night multi-cache in our area that you follow a path of reflectors hidden in the trees. must be done at night with a flashlight.
  2. for our wooden nickels, i have been very happy with geocoins.net: http://store.geocoins.net/
  3. I created a GPX reader that will read that will format cache info for printing on a 4x6 card (perfect for your hipster PDA). Read more here: http://trey.arthur.tiddlyspot.com/#WebTrip...cachingTiddlers
  4. ah, i see. my web page and xml file are on the same machine. when i tried from my hosted page, i got connect errors. agreed, i would like an api also.
  5. i currently read XML via java script: /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // importXML() - this function will open an XML document // and parse it for tags. // function importXML(fileName) { // Check for Mozilla browser if ( document.implementation && document.implementation.createDocument ) { xmlDoc = document.implementation.createDocument('', '', null); } else if(window.ActiveXObject) { xmlDoc = new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLDOM'); } else { alert('Your browser can\'t handle this script'); return; } xmlDoc.async=false; xmlDoc.load(fileName); ParseXml(xmlDoc); }
  6. The biggest problem I have with pocket queries is the descriptions have the HTML (and perhaps other) coding in them where I just want the text. Cutting and pasting from the web page is my work around for now. As to why I want to do this: I make index cards and print them out with info about the cache. Method 1 cuts and pastes from the web page by hand (no auto web harvesting). Since the GC name is unique, I thought there might be inquiries available to save some mouse strokes. Method 2 I use GPX files and auto build from them. Then go back and edit the descriptions.
  7. Is there a list of querable items from geocaching.com? For example, for cache GCABC123, I can put in the waypoint in the form: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...spx?wp=GCABC123 This will display the cache info. Can I then query the size of GCABC123? Type? etc.
  8. get the google earth plugin that shows geocaches in google earth. zoom in to where you want, find a nearby cache, pocket query using that cache as the 'reference point'.
  9. GeoTiddler? Your own personal wiki: http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ Items added to your wiki are called tiddlers. A GeoTiddler is a tiddler for geocaching. I made up this term cause that is what I thought we were doing. Yes, I always make it a point not to initially explain terms I've just made up. It's just one of the many twangalors I live by. If you click on the trey.arthur.tiddly spot link above (which is before my made up GeoTiddler term), all will be revealed.

  11. This is what I am doing now, but computers are supposed to make our lives easier. Why am I cutting and pasting when I just need the server to give me the info based on the waypoint? BTW, my hipster PDA has never run out of batteries either
  12. To understand more, see my link: http://trey.arthur.tiddlyspot.com/#WebTrip...cachingTiddlers What I would like is to fill in the the GeoTiddler form automatically via the GC waypoint name. Right now, it looks like I would need to do a XML read on the GPX file and parse it for the data.
  13. FYI, the hipster PDA is not your normal, run-of-the-mill organizer device http://wiki.43folders.com/index.php/Hipster_PDA I print off my hipster pages using GTDTW.
  14. I use my hipster PDA when I go geocaching. Basically, I create index cards for each cache I intend to visit. I have a somewhat automated way of generating these cards in TiddlyWiki, but I still enter some items by hand. Is there a way to request data about caches? For example, can I somehow pass geocaching.com a request to send me, say, the cache size of waypoint GCXXXX? The data I would like to get is: pass GCXXXX and get: cache type: regular, multi, etc cache size difficulty and terrain Lat/Lon Description Hints
  15. i have the following for trade: Indiana DNR Geocoin - Div of State Parks and Reservoir Tempting the Fates Crowsfeat30 Geocoin 2006 Massachutsetts Geocoin Antique Nickel i am seeking: florida geocoin
  16. bring in a .loc into Mapsource. save the file as a .gdb (say NewGdb.gdb). load .loc file number 2. highlight the waypoint, right click. select 'Copy' open your .gdb file (NewGdb.gdb). right click in the left pane and select 'Paste' 'Save' repeat. now all waypoints are in one file and can be batched down.
  17. an even better pda that will cost you about $1. very reliable, best battery life, drop it all you want and noone wants to steal it. check it out here. what i do is use GTD Tiddly Wiki Plus to make tiddlers of the caches i'm going after. nice for taking notes on what you left/took for later web logging. except for the cost of index cards and binder clip, all free. now if i could only figure out how to post pictures, i have screen shots.

  19. i can hear my kids now, "dad, can we take the rotting hamster carcass tb?"
  20. kyptonite encased 1/2" gauge steel wire, double knot with gorilla glue. all encased in bullet proof glass with large letters saying do not touch attached to rabid rottweiler. will someone please move my bug? or i just use a tie wrap.
  21. i plan on caching in a few states in the next couple of months. while there, i want to launch some state themed geocoins of those states and see where they go. i don't collect so looking for suggestions. i got nc from stock online stores. i am looking for: 2 florida coins 2 texas coins 2 virginia coins ADthanksVANCE
  22. for me, rather than a stat, it is confirmation that the bug is in the cache. (not that i don't trust my fellow cachers.) if someone doesn't take the bug, you can give owners piece of mind that it is still there by discovering it. unless it is logged, you are left wondering if it wasn't taken because they didn't want it or it isn't in the cache.
  23. what did the bull say to his wife when he gave her a new gps? go find the cache, cow. * takes a bow 5 gold (i mean silver) stars for me.
  24. we are new to the game, so i don't know if these are unique. the kids came up with these two: Super Fly Guy TB - a fly key chain with a theme of my son's favorite book series Pirate's gold TB - unless ye be a scurvy dog, make logs in pirate talk. arrrr.
  25. agreed. i think the different travel bug ideas are great and make things more fun. [killjoy] the engineer in me just can't stop thinking of all the details like: will it get wet? how do you charge the battery? how does it interface to the computer (ie, USB cable go along as well, drivers)? will it get dropped? etc [\killjoy]
