  1. I have the same problem, but I figured I was the only one, so I haven't mentioned it. I hid "GC9A14 - Oasis Sages" un-published for them to find as a classroom exercise. I put geocaching.com patches and compasses in it for them to keep as gifts. Then they added their own items and loogged it as their first hidden cache. It was fun, I felt good about it, but now it shows up on my "nearest" list and I am in a quandry as to how to handle it. My decision was to make it my 100th find, to honor the great kids who re-stocked a bunch of raided caches (including their own) and not feel too guilty about taking a gimmie. Maybe a technical solution can be created before that happens. At the rate I'm going, I'll have my 100th find in about 2007 Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 2. I've read this thread. I've read all of your post(s). Ive seen this quote: quote: If this is the direction of this site, then I'm be moving on to somewhere else. 3. 1. I'm going to place more caches. 2. I'm gonna make my caches higher quality. 3. I'm gonna be more patient with newbies, trolls, ***holes, grouches, and everybody else on the forums. 4. I'm going to find more time to geocache. Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 4. I know that is long, but I said it was self indulgent! Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... It is imperative that we learn where UFO's come from and what their purpose is... - -Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter Director, Central Intelligence Agency 1947-1950
  5. I wanted to try something new as far as log entries are concerned. Today presented me with that opportunity. I logged 7 finds on 8 cache pages today. I logged them as a saga (or diary) and referenced the beginning of the saga and next installment on each cache page. The entire saga follows: GCBBC0 - White Pelican 04:30 – I got up at to go geocaching alone. Sugar’s broken foot prevents her from going with me to all but “drive-by caches”. 05:25 – Spent about 25 minutes trying to find (in the dark) the correct approach to the cache without getting on the Hanford site or drowning in the river. 05:50 – Slipped on a pile of ice-covered concrete slabs (Broken up) and suffered anterior dislocation of left shoulder. 05:52 – Reduced dislocation by ramming back against concrete slab (ever see Lethal Weapon?) 05:52 – Made decision to not let physical infirmities limit fun on a great geocaching day. 06:15 – Finally made my way to the cache site. 06:15 – 06.48 – Searched around (in the dark) for the cache. Finally decided to sit down and wait till dawn to continue search. 06:50 – Took off gloves, put down walking stick, set GPSr down in a protected place, heard “thunk” sound, and realized that I had put GPSr down on top of cache. 06:55 – Logged cache, left and found really easy access to cache area (it was dawn by then). GCB8EC – Landing View 08:10 - Arrived at the cache site. This is the second time for me at this cache. 09:00 – Gave up (again). After spending 50 minutes crawling all over everything at the site, I just gave up. Went back to the 4-Runner, said the “Serenity Prayer three (3) times, took some deep breaths, (ouch that hurt my shoulder), and moved on. GC93B0 – Copycat #2 09:30 – Arrived at the park. Both gates were locked. I started to just park at the entrance or across the street and I got to thinking that it was probably locked up just like after hours, so they probably didn’t want anyone in there. I decided to catch this one later. The saga continues at GCBB1C – Waterfall View by Lindsayk GCBB1C – Waterfall View 09:45 – Arrived at site. GPSr read “2 feet to next”. 10:00 – Found Cache, made log entry. This one is hard to do without being observed. GCAA30 – Watch out for soccer moms 10:25 – Arrived at site. Didn’t see any soccer moms, in fact, didn’t see anyone. 10:30 – Located cache. A light rain had begun to fall. 10:35 replaced cache and got ready to move on. GCB368 – That’s Amore!! 10:45 – Arrived at cache site. It was raining hard. I gave consideration to returning to the Tri-Cities. 10:47 – Walked around general area, I didn’t see anything that looked like a cache container. 10:49 – Went back to the car to get a flashlight to look into some “hidey-holes”. 10:51 – Found cache but couldn’t open it. Left shoulder was really singing the pain song by then. The rain was steadily getting harder. 10:53 – Got container open. The pen wouldn’t write. Used my own pen and left it in the cache. Tried to keep open cache dry. TNLN (other than the pen). 10:54 – Began to re-seal cache. Cursed, cried, cursed some more. Turned head sideways to see better and got rain in ear. Left arm was useless due to shoulder dislocation, had to use one hand (right) only. Did I say I cursed? Finally got cache re-sealed. I had thought of doing something similar with a cache before, I think it could work better with a screw top. 11:00 – Off to next site. GCB8F8 – A Lighter View 11:15 – Arrived at cache site. 11:20 – After driving around chasing the coordinates, I decided to just stop and look around. It was beginning to snow and GPSr readings were erratic at best. 11:35 – Went back to the car to get out of the rain/snow. Decided to give up and log it as a DNF. 11:40 – Re-read the details page and got a bright idea. Got out and went straight to the cache. 11:45 – Stopped at Subway for a sandwich. GCBB4A – Garretson’s View 12:15 – Arrived at cache site. 12:25 – Located waypoint after trudging through mud and snow. My earlier experience with the shoulder dislocation made me VERY conservative on the snow-slick rocks. 12:27 – Found cache but could not get my fat fingers around it. I got smart and pulled off my gloves. 12:30 – Logged find with my muddy fingers and got mud all over the log pages. Back to GCB8EC – Landing View 12:35 – While on my way back to the Tri-Cities I thought about the three caches by Lindsayk that I had found and that one stubborn one that I hadn’t been able to find after two tries. I felt like I had a handle on her style and maybe I should give Landing View one more shot on my way home. 12:45 – I arrived (for the third time) at the cache site. I thought I knew where the cache was, so I didn’t even get my GPSr out of the car. I went straight to where I thought it was, checked, and was sorely disappointed. 12:47 – I walked over to where the coordinates indicated the cache should be and ran into elkmilk and mojavegirl. I asked if they minded if I hunted with them, they said no, so we started sharing what we each had already looked at. I got into a conversation with mojavegirl and elkmilk continued crawling around. 13:00 – elkmilk found it. 13:02 – Just as we were logging the find mojavegirl spotted two geocachers and said to elkmilk; “You better get that back, here come some more geocachers”. It was PJnRG. I went to them and ask what they wanted to do and they elected to wait until we finished logging and re-hiding to start their hunt. 13:05 – 13:15 – We all stood in the rain and chatted. This cache site seems to be a meeting place for local cachers. Elkmilk, mojavegirl, and Sluggo left PJnRG to “do their thing”. What a day (and saga) this has been! Dislocated shoulder, caching in the dark, rain, snow, frustration, meeting new friends (that I’ve read their logs for over a year) and seeing old friends. This is what it’s all about! In my beloved “Deep South” we have a superstition that says: “what ever you do on New Year’s Day you will do all year long”. I believe in that superstition, I hope everyday is as full of mystery, fun, and good friends as today was. However, I can do without the dislocated shoulder. 01/01/03 – What a day! 7. I had a similar thing happen in 1976. My cat Gismo goes through strech collar at the rate of about 6 a year (most are found sooner or later). Some people may not understand why I don't just get a regular collar. It's just hard to forget. I feel for you. Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 8. I saw a GRUNGE of (mostly) youngsters in the parks this weekend with GPSrs. It is just a mater of time before they make their way to geocaching.com. I have already had about three inquires at work. I'm really glad for the opportunity to help a fresh flock of newbies learn about the game (sport) I love. Eastern Washington stands by "ready to assist". (Seems like there should be a "SIR" at the end of that sentence. Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 9. Use the search link and find Kerry (username) and e-mail him through the blind e-mail system of the site. He is the most knowledgeble user (that I'm aware of) in both the GPS SYSTEM and the GPSr systems. I'm sure there are others, but that's where I would start. 11. You can't add to an existing document (file) in the download process. Check as many as desired on a single search page (there are up to 25 per page). Then open a file, open another file (be sure they arent "full window") and drag and drop from one file to the other. At first it will appear that you have appended B to A, but when you save it it will be ordered however you chose. If you have a membership (sponsership) you can get pocket queries which make it a simple process. Every Thursday I get an e-mail with the 495 closest caches (that leaves room in my GPSR for five waypoints of my own) in xxx.loc format. It saves a lot of time. If you're not a member, consider becoming one, if you are a member, check out pocket queries. Let me know if you need more info. Sluggo Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 12. Ixnay onay ethay offeecay anscay... We have a very dry climate in South-Eastern Washington (9 in rain per year and avg. humidity around 29% Rel Hum.) and coffee cans still get damp, rust and let lots of our mobile real estate in, and the lids tend to split in cold weather. Real "Tupperware" (very expensive, unless Sugar isn't around when I take it) and high end Rubbermaid work well out here. However, all of my caches are good 'ol surplus ammo boxes. I found one of the PVC pipe caches today and was really impressed. It was at a vineyard so I guess they get irragation supplies relatively cheap (they probably buy it a ton at a time). I don't think it is cost-effective in general (for me) but if I needed a container that was longer than usual I would use it in a heartbeat. I can just see it now, "Sluggo's Walking Stick Only Cache", Take a walking stick and leave a walking stick (4 foot limit). Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 13. Those large (about 3 - 5 gallons) pickle buckets work well. You can spray paint them to match the background or camo. Occasionally various pizza parlors and delis sell them for about $2 - $3 each. There is a health-food store in my neighborhood that sells them. Whatever you are "Giving" away must be hidden and protected from the elements, so why not make it a cache. If you want it to be a gift, just say that tradeing is NOT required or even discouraged. 14. When I ran into logscaler while he was hunting "Tale of Two Sisters" I cupped my hands and yelled at him. He thought; "There's some fool yelling at me". Then I held up my GPSr and yelled at him, he thought; "There's some fool with a GPSr yelling at me". Then I turned around to show him the Groundspeak logo on my tee-shirt and yelled again, he thought; "There's some fool geocacher yelling at me". Red nodded her head in response. 15. Why is everyone on this thread showing up as a "Guest" (sans Avitar)? I was named after the character "Mr. Sluggo" in the Mr. Bill show on SNL in the late seventies. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! BTW - I wonder if I'll be logged as a guest? Oh... nevermind! (Time tripping again)! Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 16. Hey Slower Pace, Does that Maggie 315 work in ice fog? If it does, be sure to set a waypoint at the car before you leave. That way when you overrun the car, you'll know it's there. 17. Hey!... I came 673,000 lightyears, through the interdemensional divide, and across the electron gap in a craft that is almost indistinguishable from an ammo box. I think they are beautiful and useful. I just can't seem to get rid of that funky smell. Anybody got one of those automobile air fresheners? I would prefer the "Trafalmadorian gotekah tree" fragrance. Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 19. In general I don’t care for virtuals. I don’t hate them… I don’t think they are lame (in general)….. I don’t think they are geocaches either. The only virtual I have logged is one that required you to find the item that gave the cache its name. (Thanks, ikayak). That is a lot different from taking a photo or reading a plaque. The term "Geocache" contains “cache” . There is no “cache” in virtual caches. (And no crying in baseball). Maybe the name should be changed from “virtual cache” to geodiscovery” or “geolocation” or “geo-something descriptive”. (I’m really being serious). The site supports “Benchmark Hunting” but we don’t call them “Benchmark Geocaches”. Some people (myself included) have this ill-defined sense of “the spirit of geocaching” and tend to want to promote the game and keep it true to “the spirit of geocaching”. That doesn’t invalidate other people’s ideas or goals about the game. The standard argument for whether it is acceptable to place a “virtual cache” is some place where it is impossible or impractical to place a “standard cache”. (NPS lands, ROW of a Railroad, etc). I think if you can’t place a cache, then whatever you chose to do, is something other than geocaching. If someone wants to direct total strangers to a neat place and see something that they think is beautiful or unusual and means a lot to them, by giving them the coordinates of the location… then more power to them. The question is… should I make this connection through Geocaching.com? Maybe it’s in the best interest of Geocaching.com and the game of geocaching, to allow this activity to take place within the geocaching.com database. Then again, maybe that activity should be moved elsewhere. The site is supported by memberships, if more members like “standards” than “virtuals” then after a while the bulk of the membership will view “virtual lovers” as parasites. If more of the members like “virtuals” then the bulk of the membership will view “standard lovers” as parasites. Only if the bulk of the membership likes both equally, can the host-parasite relationship be avoided. For me, I prefer a future where I go to Geocaching.com to check out the caches and then hop over to Benchmarkhunting.com to check out the benchmarks, and then over to Niceplacestovisitandfunthingstolookat.com to find a nice picnic spot. If you intend to flame me, I won’t see it until tomorrow night, so don’t think this was “hit and run” It's just that I get up at 04:00. Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control... 20. Speaking for Sugar also, We wish you all a very Merry Christmas! And speaking for myself, It's not the number of presents you get, nor the number of finds you have, but the number of friends you make along the way. 23. In 1991 I made good on a promise I made someone in 1961 and got my private ticket in about 3 months. I took my training out of Palomar-McClellan (CRQ - Carlsbad, CA). I flew some in NC and WA until 1995 then took a 3 year break. I flew some in IL in 1997 - 1998 (That is when I got my Garmin GPS Pilot III)and then lost my medical. I haven't had the funds to get my medical back, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. It's such a waste to go through getting your ticket, just to let it drop. Maybe soon!
