  1. Larry, sorry for the damage. That long center "flaw" doesn't look like a scratch to my eye, rather a fracture. I thought the 6xx series had a form of Gorilla Glass? So much for super glass.
  2. Another 1/2 vote for BaseCamp. The slide show feature of your track and geotagged photos is very slick. However Garmin Adventures sucks inasmuch as it requires the user to install BaseCamp to view your final output. If Garmin were to create a universal web based interface like flash or HTML5 it could be killer. Oh wishful thinking!
  3. Assuming it is like the OR 450, then you can change the background image for each profile. Also, you can make your own. They are just 240 x 400? jpegs. If you would like, I could attach one I've made in white.
  4. Becky, Any handheld GPS receiver will record a track in GPX format, as will most modern automotive units. Given that, I suggest you narrow your search based on other criteria, such as cost, battery life and available maps.
  5. I'm wondering if the previous two posters and the OP haven't upgraded to a late version firmware. Just because they purchased a "new" GPS doesn't mean it has the latest firmware. While I can't speak to the eTrex, an Oregon x50 should be running v5.50 or later. I suspect that an iPhone has an automatic firmware update, whereas the non-connected Garmin GPS has an entirely manual/user initiated update process. When I got my 450, the trip odometer was off 20% compared to the track distance. Now rarely a 1% difference, so firmware makes a difference.
  6. Just press the back arrow, Lower-left. Works for me.
  7. Here's some real world data on my OR 450 with 2000 mAH Eneloops. The GPS beeped low battery a few hundred yards from my vehicle after a 3-day backpack. Temps were mid-30s to low 60s. I have the battery save option on, so I have to touch the display to wake the map after 30-sec. From 2011 if that matters.
  8. I'm currently building a 3862 MB map for a Nuvi as a single gmapsupp.img file. MapSource has been chewing on it for 2 hours with about a hour to go. I like MS because it allows me to name the map set which is useful when enabling/disabling individual maps. Last I tested, my Nuvi 205W does not support AnyName.img like the Oregon, et al. Is MapInstall any faster? Last I remember MI could not name the map set, still true? Thoughts/Comments?
  9. Try a different or custom profile. Reportedly works for other units. Report back.
  10. The one at GPScity is the "400" not the "400t". This thread is about the "t"... Besides, isn't the 400 1st generation, and x50 2nd generation, and 6xx 3rd generation?
  11. No, nothing you can do. Simply enable/disable the maps in setup by title. You only need to see one map at a time, enable it, disable the rest.
  12. That's factory speak, I have both on my PC and use MS 10X more than BC. True and False. CN is tied to the unit, But the 24K Topos are NOT locked to one GPS, but them on as many GPS receivers as you own, including Nuvis. I have the Garmin SW Topos, rarely use it, crappy trails. I use the Above the Timber topos for the trails. Based on what you've said, get a Nuvi for CN, ~$100 and put the topos on both the Nuvi and your existing GPS. If your have to have a new handheld, consider the 450T from REI, $200 until June. I have a OR 450, I'm not getting a 600.
  13. If you ever want to Geotag photos then BaseCamp is/was a great solution. Had problems last time I tried. The photos show as icons on the BC map, touch one and photo viewer pops up. You can then use the Next/Previous arrows to cycle through the photos and the map stays in sync. In addition, once geotagged, you can load those same photos onto your OR and use the photo viewer with icons on the map. Touch the icon and the photo opens on your OR. Very well done. I too use MapSource most of the time, except for the above.
  14. NOT BaseMap . . . BaseCamp!!!! MapSource is light, nimble, and obsolete. BaseCamp is new, slow to load, require MS Net Framework which is huge by itself, but BC will do things MS will not, the reverse is also true. Most have both on their PC's. Go here: Demo Maps and download any Windows demo map Run the download and a few dialogs in you will see a STOP with instructions to download and install Training Center and MapSource. TC is just a gateway. Run your 100K Topo DVD Use the link from my previous post to understand MapSource and load maps to your SD card.
  15. All Garmin or 3rd party maps are just that MAPS, not a map viewer. To view any Garmin map you must install a map viewer, either Garmin MapSource or BaseCamp. Those programs in turn load the selected map tiles to your 60CSx. Here's a webpage that goes over the process: http://abovethetimber.com/index.php/support/install-windows BTW, Windows and Mac are different, fancy that.
  16. The Cx was my first GPS. Definitely has a USB port, great battery life, excellent color screen and known jumpy behavior recording tracks. The Firmware upgrade is worth a try. I moved on to a Colo then an Oregon 450, which meets all my needs.
  17. How do you define BEST, what STATE or Country?
  18. Precharged and LSD Low Self Discharge NiMH are synonymous terms. Prior to Sanyo inventing the Eneloop LSD NiMH battery, all NiMH batteries had to be charged prior to use. LSD NiMH batteries are often sold as Precharged NiMH batteries, meaning you can use them straight from the retail package. Classic NiMH batteries (like the Maha Powerex) would go flat in a year, whereas a LSD NiMH would only lose ~10% of its charge in a year.
  19. Those sound like woes, NOT wows. To each his own.
  20. Perhaps you'd be so kind as to post a pic of that mounted on a pack? Also, as I understand, it has Velcro that is the attachment. How well does that work in the field to view the screen? Here's an example: Thanks
  21. It's all relative. BTW have you gotten brave enough to open her up and tell us what kind of chip its running. Apparently, no longer the STM Cartesio. Not surprising, that chip is now 4-years old, ancient by CPU standards
  22. Assuming you had it set correctly, then you've found the first bug in the 6xx firmware. Based on past history, many more bugs will follow. My 450 records tracks with both the screen and backlight timed out in roughly 30-sec. Since Kolenka is clearly an expert user, will be interesting if he can duplicate your results.
  23. My experience with fast charging is fast death. I killed some premium 2900mAH Powerx cells with a cheap fast charger. My current LaCrosse defaults to 200mA per cell and that works well with basic Eneloops. Thanks
  24. That suggests it is not a USB charger? Requires another wall wart? Second??? My OR 450 has a simple rubber plug over the USB port, how is the 6xx USB done? Thanks
  25. Interesting. You clearly know you're why around electronics. Too bad inasmuch as DeLorme was the only viable competition for Garmin. My read of the tea leaves is that DeLorme is phasing out of the handheld business. For me maps are the only reason to own a GPS and they keep getting better, much better, more current, than paper. Thanks for the post.
