  1. Yep you have to do that - you wouldn't want to get audited - while you are at it redo the logs at the actual cache.
  2. There is a BIG difference between putting a magnetic micro on an electrical transformer and placing it on the transformer ENCLOSURE. The latter being the big green / grey steel box deal which is so handy to place the micro on the outside of. The transformer is housed inside the steel box so you cant tamper with it. The steel box is not part of the transformer its the ENCLOSURE.
  3. What about the numerous cell phones that have GPS capability - or cameras or laptops. These days you would have to confiscate everything at port of entry
  4. Boggleman - That looks like an old style Parker, I remember those!
  5. Not correct. This would only be true if ALL geocaches were equally spatially distributed, which they are not. Given the preponderance of geocaching in NA and Europe I think it likely that the capital of the geocaching (kind of like the geocaching center of gravity) world would be somewhere like 50 miles under the center of the North Atlantic
  6. Used 76CSx on Carnival cruise FL to Bahamas - never any problem.
  7. A man with one watch knows what time it is, a man with two is never sure. To check the accuracy of any particular GPS unit take it to a USGS benchmark (or similar survey monument) with KNOWN and accurate position (many of them are for altitude not location).
  8. There is a good probability that I am a Statistician.
  9. I guess placing caches in ammo cans teaches kids to open up the cans potentially exposing them to live ammunition which can cause their death.
  10. Sounds more like a deal for Waymarking to me
  11. Except that one of the most critically important gauges is obscured from view: Engine coolant temperature. It would be real easy to run the engine hot and ruin the car if a leak were to occur. Save $600 not replacing the odometer / speedometer but have a warped engine block cost you $3500 to fix/ replace because you could not see the engine heating up, not a good idea if you ask me. If you must use this method at least put it over the tachometer where you can at least "hear" what revs the engine is up to. Edited for typo
  12. Err, that would be "Here here" just to keep things straight.
  13. Freeday's post CLEARLY shows a difference between the number of points collected by the 2 units. Red unit has 410 points while blue unit has 500. As I discussed above the unit with the higher number of points collected shows the longer distance.
  14. I see no mention of location sample rate here. Consider the following: 2 GPS units: 1) One GPS is sampling (recording) a location to calculate distance every second, 2) The second GPS samples every 5 seconds. In one minute the 1st unit will have 59 line connections between the 60 locations it samples as you were walking - it then sums the distance recorded by each line connection, the second will have 11 line connections between the 12 location samples. The small side to side deviations you make as you are walking will be included in the distance covered in the first GPS but not the other. For example if you go left one second then right one second then left and right again for one second followed by one second forward the first GPS will record 5 seconds worth of total distance while the second will only record 1 second worth of total = forward distance. This problem is much worse at LOW speeds as the side to side deviations are proportionally much greater.
  15. In light of the possibility that a cache location could be published on other web sites (or even in a regular newspaper for that matter) and the clarification that FTFP is indeed a recognized acronym, I am creating a new acronym which will better clarify where the publication occured: FTFPGC which of course would be "First To Find Published on GeoCaching" or if you like "First To Find Published on Geocaching dot Com" Of course the rest of you may wish to add your own along the lines of FTFPN etc.
  16. On another forum one of the signatures is the following: Fast; Cheap; Good - You can only have two.
  17. You might want to expand your net? Right now your pool is limited to: 1) Doctors 2) Medical 3) Geocachers 4) Forum participants
  18. Had my temporary mounts on for about a year now in 1 vehicle and 2 disks in 2 different vehicles where it was removed and a new one placed in the new vehicle when I traded it in. NO problems, no movement, it was hard to get it off the old vehicle before I traded it in but it did all come off. Sun cold no difference. I wonder why I would ever need a permanent adhesive which Garmin says will never come off.
  19. Like living down wind from the JIF factory
  20. Or this one..... POLO Humm - lets see we have 5 active polo ponies, plus 2 retired (but didn't have the heart to give away / sell), and each eats its way through about $$$ feed / hay per month, plus stabling, farrier and veterinary fees, then theres the tack (saddles / bridles and such for each horse) and the trailer plus all the equipment (buckets, bandages, halters etc) and the truck to pull it all. Then there's polo boots, hats, and freaking shirts, dozens of broken / warped mallets ($120) and hundreds of misshapen / lost / broken balls at $3.50 each. We have not played or even practiced yet. Then there's tournament fees, grooms fees and the bloody bar fees after the game. Gas to pull it all about, plus two local kids who come in after we return from matches to groom and regularly twice a week to groom / ride and train. Come to think of it I don't know why we bother - because I don't even play!! So don't be claiming geocaching is expensive - its definitely on the cheap side. Outside of the vehicle and gas I don't see how you could rack up $3000.00 ever and the horses eat that every two months. Lets see what have I forgotten: Oh yes we have not bought a pony in a while - OK throw in a few of those every so often (say 1 per year). Ooooh I am in a bad mood now why did I count all of that up - time to go geocaching - he can feed the stinking hayburners.
  21. Completed survey. Couple of points on the survey (I am a Ph.D. statistician). Survey needs specific header information about who you are - links to your research department etc for additional credibility. A time line for collecting results is important (I assume you want to finish your Ph.D eventually). You dont ask about the general location of the respondent - this prohibits classification of response by specific region a factor which may an important response descriptor. No socio economic data is requested so you cannot classify responses in relation to socio economic status which may be a BIG predictor of inclination to participate in any informal learning activities. You also ask no questions about rural vs urban enviroments which are likely to be aliased with the type of informal learning activities. Another would be weather a vehicle was regularly used to get from cache to cache. Good luck with your research.
  22. If you spend more than $60 you are spending money you dont need to and will never get the utility from. $300 is WAY too much - its like buying a new modern computer and then loading DOS 3.1 to run "MS Notepad" on it - what a waste.
  23. If the game is about a building caching community then hints and help from phone-a-friend etc is fine, even encouraged. If its about cache owners micro-managing their caches I guess all bets are off. In my limited experience cache owners want their caches found, and are generally forthcoming with tips and verification of coordinates etc.
  24. Given GPS location of balcony > load into Google Earth > get nearby address > load nearby address into county tax record system > get property parcel number and coords > recheck parcel coords in Google Earth to see if they contain the balcony > back to lacal tax records to get name and complete address of owner > now load name and address into phone records and get phone number. It's REALLY easy folk, plus all this information is avail from numerous sources it's impossible to hide - ever been to court (even if you were a plaintif) there is a court record for all to see and and seeing as court disputes often focus on property they are loaded with addresses etc. There is no real way to hide but I still dont advertise.
