  1. I have to admit that I have not always played by the rules. I have let a kid take an extra swag item. Ok that really is the only rule I have broken on occasion. Believe me that most of the places that I trade, the cache is improved with my trade. That being said.

    WTF

I recently logged a note because I seen the cache but I was not able to penetrate its impervious sealing mechanism (Ice froze it closed). A note is a great halfway log. It lets folks know not to be alarmed and believe the cache is missing but that you may have had troubles getting the log book.

My biggest complaint about the DVF found logs is this. When people log that they found it that prolongs the archival process. If I can show that the last "Find" was several months ago with a owner that is absent then the reviewer is more likely to archive it right now.

Those that are afraid of a DNF log are kicking the rest of us down the stairs.

  3. If the maintenance needed is simple like wet log or torn ziplock then just take care of it. I do it quite often. If the container is damaged then think about fixing that that also.

Here are my thoughts on cache maintenance. Sometimes people get busy, real busy. The CO could have many things going on in life and they choose geocaching as the activity to currently ignore. We could all hammer on him and call him names, or we could just help out our fellow cachers. Some people are active in the hobby but their cache maintenance takes a back seat. On those occasions you can be a bit more stern.

I have been going through some of the caches in my area that seem to have been muggled months and month ago. I send the reviewer a email telling them about the cache and the fact that the last believable find was X months ago. The reviewers are pretty good about archiving caches that you point out are obviously not active anymore.

  4. This does not overly alarm me. They could just as easily ban the activity altogether. This shows that they are trying to make means to pursue the activity while protecting their properties.

Yes it is another pain in the tukas but not a horrible chain of events.

Filling out that simple piece of paper would not be that bad. If you are making thoughtful, quality hides this is a mere inconvenience.

If you are throwing a film canister out the car window and taking a moving coordinate of the bush then yes this is so not worth it.

  5. I agree that the folks that host this online game have ambition and drive. I am not against them making money. I don't really notice all the member only caches but they don't truly bother me. On occasion I think wow that was a cool hide too bad others don't get to log it. But that is the name of the game. I hope that it never goes to a subscription only site because the freebie is what helps to get the players. Besides I don't pay the $3.00 for the "premium" caches anyway. I pay for the PQ and the chance to support the site.

  6. I had a similar cache in my area that needed to be archived. There was at least one SBA logged and quite a few DVF. Among those DNFs was a few folks that logged a find stating "found the hiding spot, great park". I sent the local reviewer an email stating that it needed to be archived as it had not had a "Believable" log since May 2008. It was promptly archived.

Here is where the people who NEED AND I MEAN NEED!!! To get a smiley hurt the hobby. Their logs that state they found the hiding spot but didn't sign the log are cryptic and hard to understand. They usually are in a whole nest of DNF logs. This tends to confuse the reviewer and causes there to be inaction for a longer period of time. If you give it an honest search and don't sign the log book, log the DNF. I admit that sometimes I do not log DNF when I don't get the chance at an honest search (ie. muggles, kids screaming to go home).

In short if you found the log book strewen out and the plastic baggie then you need to pick up the mess. Post a NM and personally contact the CO. If there is no response you can post a SBA and contact the reviewer with the information that you have, like the busted cache and the condition of the cache hide.

  7. I'm really struggling with this issue. We just started on the 3rd of January and with kids we don't want to be driving for hours and doing major hikes for 1 or 2 finds. However many close by require stealth. We are having a hard time deciding how much stealth is enough and figuring out the difference between being stealth and looking like criminals.

I don't want people to lose their caches but I'd like to be able to participate with my kids. Or am I wrong and is this just not really a kid/family thing? :)

I would have to say that having kids along is one of the best tools in the bag. I try to get some of my kids to come along just so that I don't look like a weirdo at the park. This is a great sport to get kids involved with. It works all the muscles including the brain. If you have kids along what harm could you really be doing? It helps to have kids in nearly every muggle situation that there is.

  8. I find it great that you have to register to see the coordinates. It cuts the Muggles down a bit and if people want to play the game why not have them part of the community.

That is a upgrade that I like.

  9. I have aquestion about posting pictures in your logs? I have seen pictures of the area around a cache site but not where the cache is actually hidden. I was looking through some of the logs in caches that I own and one of them has a picture of where the cache is hidden, which pretty much takes the fun out of trying to locate it. I might as well tell everyone to look inside the hollow log. What is the rule and how does the general caching group feel about it? Thanks - CachinSpree

This is the cache: GC1K05A - Tornado Alley

I recently posted a picture of a cache location but it does no one any good. There is no hard rule about posting spoilers in the logs. Most will try to avoid it but sometimes there is something so special about the find that people will be compelled to post a picture. I would not be concerned about it but as the cache owner I believe you can delete the photo.

    Enjoy

  10. Of course you both log the find.

I was with a large group of cachers today and we all loged on the same FTF line. I have never had a FTF but it was fun to share with about 12 other cachers.

Now if you are with someone who doesn't want you to log any finds that they have then you need to find a new partner. This is just a fun game with little in the way of rules. Take advantage and play how you are comfortable.

  11. We went geocaching today for the first time, and we looked for a couple that we were not able to find. We looked when we got home and saw that they were put there in March 2006. Do they sometimes disappear after 2 or 3 years? We were able to find one that was just made a few days ago!

What size were the caches that you found, and what size were the ones that you didn't find?

When you are new to the hobby some of the micro/nano sizes are not very appropriate to try first. I sometimes hunt for the micro/nano caches but I still get frustrated cause I don't like to hang around looking for too long.

The length that a cache has been active is not a indication of the ease of find.

  12. A metal detector is Cheating!

Cheating??? What about the other tools that you use to help in the search. Many could be considered cheating. /joking

I really think it is fun to use the detector but then the beauty of the game is that you can play how you like. There are only a few hard rules but the rest is blown to the wind. The way I see it is the snow is like a blind fold and the detector is my chance to melt away the snow and pretend it is a nice spring day.

  13. A couple of little stickers can make a kids day when they have been finding nothing but micros for a bit.

That is not a bad idea. My only problem with stickers is that they end up all over the inside of the cache. If the Micro is of good quality and waterproof there is no real problem with them. Some micro's only have room for a log and that's it. I know what you mean about finding micro caches. I generally filter them out of my PQ when I am taking kids.

I don't purchase much for trading. I mainly get kids things and then let the kids do trades when they come along. I enjoy the signature items much more. I leave a geocaching DVD that is somewhat entertaining. Just me and my kids tearing through the woods.

  14. I had a cache that was a large capsule in a tree. I had to go to the location three different times. After reading the logs I finally realized it was in the tree. I learned a valuable lesson dont always look on the ground!

That is valuable advise for many things in life. I did a cache today that had a hint that was actually "Not on the ground". I have been to a metal detecting competition that had coins hidden in the bark and forks of trees. I never assume anything is near the ground.

  15. This is not about a crossing into Canada but is a funny story about traveling abroad.

I was traveling commercial for the military it was about the time of the Tsunami in the south pacific. I was trying to get back to the states but it was difficult to get anything resembling a logical itinerary. I had to go from Guam to Fukioka Japan then onto Tokyo and then to SanFran. I had less than one hour between flights in each of these cities.

Just remember that if the airport code is FUK, that is what is going to happen. I was held up in FUK cause they could not understand why I would book an itinerary that was as awful as their airport code.

That was the sweetened condensed version of the story.

  16. I was wondering if some of you attempt to hit caches that may be buried in deep snow?

I took this winter as an opportunity to get one cache that is really only accessible by boat in the summer. I liked getting that one so I hit a few more. Sometimes they are really buried.

I have used a metal detector on the caches that I knew were metal. It worked really well. The cache that I dug out today was under at least 2.5 feet of snow. I have some snow shoes on the way and I plan to try and rescue some travel bugs that are currently stranded.

Here are some logs from the past two days.

  17. This may not really be one of my many hobbies but.... We have placed two caches that have history themes. The first one is the cache at our house, it has a driving tour with descriptions of the historical features near our house. The other is a puzzle micro, the puzzle is not real hard but it requires you to read a bit about the historical marker that the cache is placed on. To me getting the puzzle micro would be worth it. I made it a puzzle because micros are not real fun (IMHO) but if you get some lerni'n in that is better than any mctoy ever made.

On my puzzle micro I enjoy the logs that state "Drove by here many times. Never knew there was a marker here."

The cache at our house gets lots of compliments on the driving tour. Many logs are from people who grew up in the area and remember some of the points of interest. They make me feel good to read about how the cache has brought back childhood memories.

  18. I've seen ALRs that...

    - require that you have under or over X amount of finds in order to log the cache.

    - require you post your log in some sort of verse.

    - require you e-mail a code found inside the cache to the owner (of course there also needs to be a logbook).

    - require that the cache be some sort of milestone (e.g. 100th find)

    - require that you trade

    - require that you trade TB for TB (In TB hotels)

    - require that you hide your own cache within x days (some spewer, ummm I mean spawner caches require this).

    - require that your log conform to some arbitrary standard set by the cache owner (e.g. No cut and paste).

    - require that you stick to some sort of theme with your trades.

Some of those are just plain obnoxious. Under/over finds, Milestone. Hide a cache, and the cu de gra TB trades.

I will give the others a try and love to play along with the game. I only have one hide that really has no theme and was kind of a grab the area before others do. I am all for ALR's if it add enjoyment or quality to the log.

  19. Where not into geocaching as much as we used to be..how do you get out of the premium membership monthly bill....

If you paid by paypal you can cancel the membership from paypal. I know cause my card expired and it canceled the account until I updated the card.

Its only $3.00 a month. What are you on the Dave Ramsey play. :surprise: Just joking.

Maybe in the future you will get back into the groove. My wife complains that my hobbies are on rotation. Every couple of months they come back around and she claims they are very predictable.... I think not... Now where is my fishing pole.

  20.

I usually do enjoy these finds. About as much as a snackwell cookie, in comparison to a slice of homemade key lime pie. There's room for both in my sweet tooth diet. <_<

Not really but holly cow that key lime. I am lucky that my coworkers like me so much that I get homemade key lime every fricking birthday. Now my mouth is watering and all I have is turkey and orange juice.

    Thanks a bunch..........

  21. When I cache it is generally with a few kids. Our caching party is very hard to deal with at some caches because VERY RARELY is there enough pieces of swag for all of them to trade, I often wish there were. I use geocaching to teach a bit of "leave it better than you found it".

This past weekend there were at least three caches that we restocked with new stuff. They were left in much better shape that we found them.

Some new stuff I have left include, wallets, head bands, batteries, bison tubes with log books, flashlight keychains, the list goes on.

I really like the personal items best. I have been known to take a pokerchip or two, and the occasional card I liked. Me and my kids made a cool DVD of a few caches in our area. There is a bookmark list with all of the caches on the DVD so anyone that sees the DVD can easily find the caches that are on the movie. There is also a note at the end of the movie to feel free to drop it in another cache. I have not gotten much feedback on it but I hope to soon. What do others feel about finding a personal DVD in a cache?

To end this long post. I rarely let anything in the hobby get to me. The occasional nice piece of swag for the kids is what I like. This game is great, and I tell everyone that. There are no real set rules and most people are great. It really is the time spent with the family just cruising and being together.

  22. How far is the furthest a TB has traveled total? And what is the longest one trip distance?

I'll start you off on the longest one trip distance. My 'Molly' Milk Cow TB18ZK2 got a bump from her first cache where I dropped her. She went to a German megaevent for a total trip of 5055.3 miles. I am sure there are further but I figured I would set the bar at 5000 miles.
