  1. Some people fall out of the hobby and can't be bothered with your request to be nice. I have found a few TB's where the owner has not logged on for over 1 year. Just attach something else and call it good. You could also add it to your watching and see what happens. The cacher may come back and appreciate your efforts, or you will do it for the love of the game and nothing more.
  2. I agree. I don't like to hunt for a cache with no hint whatsoever. Sometimes my mind is not working properly, or more importantly my GPSR is giving me enough taunting trouble. It seems that every cache with no hint is a hide-a-key rock in a gravel pit. Sometimes the hint helps you to relax and really analyze the picture.
  3. A couple of problems with fake finds. 1. I may log a DNF and someone else logs a find that they didn't find. "Found the location but not the log. Great cache". That is not a find. In fact there is no cache. 2. They are cheating everyone who puts forth an effort to find legitimate caches.
  4. Here is how I did my cache of historical points in my small town. Kanesville Founders GC10XD2 I have a map in the cache that people can take. Some people who want to learn a bit about the area take the maps and the description. I get quite a few compliments on the history of the area. My wife's family has lived on this street since they homesteaded the land. Just an idea if you have trouble getting things published. I am also currently trying to hide other caches near the points of interest.
  5. Holy cow, thanks. I think they make pretty good LPS hides cause they dont see much weather there.
  6. I have plans to identify the dummy cache at my hide. I am going to laser identify "Keep Looking" on the dummy cache. I was not prepared for this type of response. I guess I thought everyone has seen a nano bolt hide. But maybe mine is just different enough to throw folks off the trail. It seems as though we have gotten the first responders out of the way and are on to the general caching crowd. I am going to do some more cache page tweaks and try to elude to the fact that the cache may seem easy but is may be more difficult that first thought. One of the people that has claimed a find but could not sign the log has done this same thing on many other caches in the area. I can honestly say I earned all 202 of my finds. They all have my signature on them. I have no problem passing on a cache I don't want to hunt or DNF on a hunt I give an honest try. Yes I have not logged every DNF but I do log most of them. Sometimes I don't give it an honest try and I really don't feel the need to log unless its a 1x1 and should be found with little effort.
  7. Congrats. I take a few of my girls out and they enjoy it. I have 5 soon to be 6 girls and 1 boy. I only have a few girls that want to go with me on a regular basis, but we have a great time. Don't force your girls to go but take the ones that want to go. It is a great family activity.
  8. About logging DNF. When I get home the first thing I log is found it. Then if I still have time before work that means I didn't cache long enough that day. OK, just kidding. I try to log my DNFs but sometimes I don't. They are obviously the last thing I want to log. So I log them last. I do log many if not most of my DNFs.
  9. I had a few such logs on one of my caches today. It really makes me lose faith in the caching community. The logs basically say they couldn't find the cache but what the heck I know I was in the neighborhood. If people just want to get close they can play GPS mission. That game requires no logging and you just have to get close. Seems the perfect game for folks who can't afford to lose.
  10. I got confirmation today that the false bolt head is throwing folks off. I also got another didn't find it, Found it log. This person seems to enjoy not signing any logs and claiming finds. Arrrrrgg. I am not the cache police but I may make a citizens arrest.
  11. Yeah I thought about doing something like that on a future hide. I didn't mean to come across as taking this too serious. One thing you can't do is make people play by any sort of rules. I don't think I am going to delete any logs. I did raise the difficulty by 1 full star and added that part of the fun was the container. I hope that will encourage people to be more involved with finding the log book.
  12. I am not sure which thread but someone did mention this activity. I have not seen it but I am sure it happens. Especially if your caches are particularly difficult. It takes all kinds in this world and there are those that cheat. I don't know if there is cheating in geocaching but I think the only person that gets cheated is the cheater not the cheetee. I would just go about my caching and if you see it again just erase the marks again or make them hunt in a different direction.
  13. Should I up the difficulty if there is a "dummy" cache and it seems that some have a hard time finding the log? I think I am going to check on the cache in the morning to make sure it is still there. The difficulty is currently 1.5 mainly because I was under the impression that the bolt hide was almost a gimme. Maybe not.
  14. Did they log is as a Find? If it were my cache and someone told me they were unable to find the log but claimed a Find anyway I'd delete their Find and email them with an invitation to try again, maybe with an offer of a hint if they wanted it. Yes they logged the find. "Found the cache but not log." "Like these hides." For some reason I would think that if you liked this hobby and had 500+ finds you might take it more seriously. I guess that its more about the numbers for those folks. I am pretty cautious about the logs I read on some caches. I see people just trying to boost their stats. Me personally I would not want my stats to be poisoned by any ill gotten logs. I play it conservatively as much as I would like to pad my numbers. Some folks think that they found the cache (or what appears to be the cache) and they log the find. Too me signing the log is part of the fun. I know there are those that simply refuse to open a nano and sign the log.
  15. Super glue to secure them in the nano. I bought 100 of the nano size (3/8"x1/16") rare earth magnets on ebay for $12. (Hint I did best offer and got free shipping also)
  16. I personally will not log unless I can sign the log. Sometimes it takes me getting a new log and baggie to repair damaged logs. I have even found a cache and was physically unable to get it open so I wrote a note. Which brings me to my issue. I made a very good magnetic bolt container. Complete with the bolt head and washer to attach to the front of the sign and the threads, nut, and washer on the back side. I have had the last two people mention in their log that they were not able to find the log though they said they found the cache. Part of the hide is that if you find the bolt head there is not log in that, slowing them down with a dummy cache of sorts. I have even handed the cache portion to my friends and they cant figure out how to open it. I don't think I am going to cause a stink. I guess they missed out on part of the fun of the find. I know I never get that found it feeling like when I'm signing the log.
  17. Are you cutting it along the diameter and threading it? Sounds like a lot of work, but offbeat caches do make the hobby and the Found-It logs more entertaining. Judging from some of the logs for mine, it does seem rather deceptive. I had one cacher actually email me for a hint, which made it even more hilarious when I got his "DOH!" reply. Well I have a couple of ideas. I could cut just the bottom off and make a PVC container that could fit right inside. I could cut an O-ring groove and seal the bottom with an O-ring so its a press fit. I work in a machine shop with some pretty talented folks. I am sure that when I do it we will come up with something pretty cool. I would really love to hide it near a Smokey The Bear sign that gives fire danger for the day. We have one close by but it is a super busy road and no place to hide it that is discreet enough. I will find a place.
  18. I believe that you Yourself are watching that cache. It will show what caches are in your watch list. If you don't think you have anything in your watch list check it again. I am certain it will be there.
  19. Been there done that, passed on the T-shirt. I would log the find. I have recently logged a puzzle cache that I found on accident. I signed the log so what the heck. My name is in the log. Have at it, by the way caching has few rules, and nearly none of those rules are agreed upon by the body of cachers.
  20. We have an army navy story nearby that will sell you drop tanks. The sign even says "If we don't have it you don't need it"
  21. Funny I have about the same idea. I am going to cut an extinguisher open and make it the cache. It is a 5lb CO2 cylinder and should make a large size cache. I have been debating if I should paint it a color not associated with fire (ie red). I was thinking the GC logo colors. I may give it a go this week. I have access to a machine shop where I might be able to cut O ring grooves and such.
  22. My thoughts happen to be. Hide more. In fact you have a great opportunity. Its ok to hide just as many caches as you have found. Use this opportunity to make some fantastic caches in your area. Hides are just as fun as finds. You get to hear about other experiences. I would not hide them all on one day but space it out for a few weeks. Just a thought, good luck.
  23. My feelings are inflammatory after several gin and tonics, but here goes. I agree. If I wanted to find a gnats rear in a buffalo herd I would have gotten into what some folks call forensics. I got into geocaching because I wanted to see neat places and cool cache containers. I like a good hunt for a micro if its cool, not so much if its another blinky stuck to a road sign, or even if it the size of a fly turd near a pig farm. OK, if its real hard give me some sort of clue, I will personaly deduct from my IQ if I cant find your 7.5/1 hide. (yeah it only goes to 5 but go with me, I'm making a point.) When I find the nano stuck under the lip of a urinal I am still not going to be impressed by your hiding abilities. Long story short, there are many caches that don't interest me so I continue my drive on by. In fact if I am so unimpressed I will not log the DNF you so long to see. NANNNANAANA you couldn't find the right pebble to log in my "Gravel Pits Get Me Misty Eyed" GCXXXXXZ . OK wheres my half gallon of gin at.
  24. I bolded the part of your post where you went sideways, in my opinion. Like many people in these forums, you seem to believe that the mere fact that a cache is published requires you to go log it. That sort of thinking can only lead you to unhappiness. It's a joke. That was your que to chuckle. Boy, folks take their country breakfast seriously around here.
  25. I'm a rule guy. I like that the OP brought this here. Now folks will know that this is wrong and that this is not something that is allowed. Many folks will just try anything, they don't care that the cache is not allowed.
