  1. There's a piece of software called PockeTTY, available here http://www.dejavusoftware.com/pocketty/ that can be used to see what data is being received by the GPS. Use pockeTTY to connect to the GPS serial port, listed as GPS_COM in the serial connection menu. You should see data being sent from the GPS unit even if no signal is being received, if there is signal there will be much more data in the received strings.
  2. I work part time at a stud, that's AT not AS a stud! One of the many things I have learned is that 'horses are stupid, throw rocks at them!' Never stand behind a horse. Some will try not to let you do this by continually turnig towards you others will just lash out with their rear paws. And others will just try and poo on you! Horses are nosey. Let them see you've noticed them, then ignore them, pretend you've got something better to do, it interests them and they'll come and see what you're doing. You shouldn't really 'pet' any strange animal, especially hungry lions and tigers. Most horses like to be scratched on the chest, it tends to pacify them and cause them to be still. If scratching or patting a horses neck from the ground be wary of their heads, they tend to nod a bit and having a head butting session with a horse hurts, a lot. Horses are sneaky!
  3. Hows about: Wunce I cudnt even spel Jurnolist, now I r 1!
  4. Why would anyone want to set a route that only goes halfway up the Old Man of Consiton? Just a little further and they could have admired the views from the top, ah but wait this is England it was probably raining!
  5. I like the look of the Satmap, especially with a 50hr battery life
  6. Have you got a list of the programs you installed on your 550 so that others may 'compare and contrast', maybe it's possible that you used a program that no other has tried and should beware of... Good luck with the reflashed device when it returned.
  7. Is it just me or was that Bill Oddie in there partaking of a beer?
  8. But remember this is in the press, and what journalists don't know about, they just bullsh*t about
  9. I observed this once when I was doing some testing against the GPS in the P550, I was running PockeTTY and could see a perfectly valid data stream coming from the GPS, but another piece of software which was also accessing the GPS at the same time, can't rember which one but it would have had a clock, was running a good 15 seconds behind, and altough the clock was not updating all the time it was always 15 seconds out, which was odd. I think at the time I put it down to PockeTTY being a bit of a hog on processing time, but maybe not. Haven't repeated this, but then again I haven't tried! Does MM do it all the time? Or did you only observe the once? And no, increasing the baud rate won't help! 4800 is well more than the NMEA data stram requires and you probably won't get any valid data at other baud rates.
  10. Make sure of the internal dimensions fo the tent b4 purchase, preferably by tring it out in a shop somewhere, a lot of '2' man tents are designed for dwarves (appolgies to any vertically challenged folk around here) or people who don't mind very close human contact. Lots of internal pockets are always very usefuly as is a porch at both ends, one end for junk and stuff and the other end for getting in and out. If you want reccomendations for something to lie on go for thermarests, they are the mutts nuts in sleeping comfort and if you get the seat adaptors to go with them you then have a brilliant little ground chair for sitting around of an evening.
  11. Although not having either piece of software so am unable to test to confirm, it has been reported in other threads that it is possible to use the inbuilt MS GPS Intermediate driver to drive both MM & TT. MM has to be started first as it deos the correct thing in starting the GPS, TT is then able to share the data... See a post by yours truely and associated threads for a more detailed explanation...
  12. Just to mention here that I run Anquet maps on my P550 with the whole UK 1:50K OSGB maps as a single file, just over 2GB on a 4GB card, with no problems other than it takes a while to find a new place but once there it wizzes along just fine
  13. I did it today! I found my first cache It was in Egypt, but I didn't have to go far and the weather was not disimilar to that at home! And here's a picture of Mamsey hogging the limelight as usual... I wasn't found on a staiton you know.
  14. On the premise that not many caches have their own post code, it probaly won't be much good for accurate cache hunting However on a more serious note if someone wants to lend me a copy I'll test it out!
  15. After I'd been looking for the caches on Wednesday it looked as though a herd of wild elephants had been tromping around the place I also think that the snow had mostly gone by mid-afternoon, however good advice. Our motto when travelling in Africa was; Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints (as long as they don't lead to a cache!) Of course the motto didn't inlude the bit in brackets as my travels took place before the advent of Geocaching.
  16. Oh, I'll find them, I'm that sort of person (how do you do a determined, dogged and persistant smiley?) One of the caches was a 2 litre box, even I should have been able to find that, mind you something that big needs to be cleverly hidden... Anyway Monday looks like being a bit warmer and much less snowy, so it should all be easier, but to make it interesting I'll do my route in reverse order, that way I'll get to see those hiding places I didn't see before. A little difficulty makes life more interesting
  17. Here's a handy hint, don't go cache hunting in the snow. The snow makes it virtually impossible to determine a cahce from a lump in the ground I had a great route planned yesterday, take the mountain bike, along with Mamsey Bear, a camera, my faithful GPS, some sarnies, energy bars and plenty of water, for an 18 mile ride which encompassed 9 cache points, my first ones. I'd been planning this route for a couple of weeks now so I wasn't going to let a flurry of snow stop me! Snow over mud isn't the easiest thing to cycle on but I persisted for 8 miles, visiting 4 of my 9 caches and not finding one Well I found all the locations easy enough just not the caches themselves. I hadn't taken the spoilers with me as I know I can do it without! After not finding the fourth cache I had to curtail my cycling activities and head for home as I'd run out of energy and I'd eaten all my food. Anyway I'm going for it again on Monday, weather permitting, I may even take the spoilers, so wish me luck. I told him it was more than a flurry!
  18. WM5 and the GPS Intermediate Driver I've done some reading and I now understand! If anyone wants to do the same reading follow this link; http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....erReference.asp In summary, for the non Geek, hopefully. GPS software has to be specifically written in order to obtain data via the virtual com port provided by tne GPS Intermediate Driver, its a matter of power saving. The GPS hardware does not run all the time only when requested to do so by your software. Older software, not using the GPS Intermediate Driver, wants to connect directly to the GPS hardware, turn it on and then process the incoming NMEA string itself. Newer software that uses the GPS Intermediate Driver can request the GPS to turn on and then make use of pre-processed NMEA data, your software can specify what it wants to retreive, once the data has been delivered it can then turn off the GPS until needed again. The problem comes when Older software tries to access the GPS via the GPS Intermediate Driver. The GPS Intermediate Driver can pass though the NMEA data required, different mode, however the the GPS hardware on/off commands are disabled (not really but it appears like this to most software). The reasoning behind this is that some software can request the GPS hardware to switch to a proprietry data mode which would then screw up (technical term) the operation of the GPS Intermediate Driver, defeating the purpose of having it in the first place. Well I hope this helps, typing the summary has helped me understand why it all happens, and if you want more in depth info use that earlier link, it goes to the WM5 SDK. And for those of you that can't find the GPS config option on WM5 mobile phones and some WM5 pdas, there are registry settings that hide this interface, I found refernce to it while searching for the above info, but I'm bu****ed if I can find it again, however I think the registry settings are referenced in the SDK somewhere. Phew, my brain hurts!
  19. Ooh, I like this! And it works, I connect to COM4, the 'virtual port' using PockeTTY and then all my problems go away. WiFiFoFum which before would not even recognise COM4 can now connect and recieve live GPS data, however I think PockeTTY is being a bit promiscuos as WiFiFoFum is having trouble fetching it's data. I'll try with some more COM4 fiendly software tomorrow, this install hasn't got anything else GPS related. Hope this fixes the Anquet mapping issue whereby it continuosly connects and disconnects from COM4. Many thanks for this useful tip Rgrds M.
  20. Hello all, Just like to say I'm new round here, haven't even found a cache yet! Although I do have a plan, a Mio P550 and a mountain bike Anyway to the topic of the P550, what a great devie, had mine abut 6 months now and for those not so on road adventures I'm using Anquet mapping. Thats only 'cos I've used it on the PC for a few years and it seems pointless ot get something else when I've spent all that money. and it works and its good! On a 4GB card, works fine in my mio, the whole of the UK at 1:50,000 takes about half the card. And now Anquet has a new feature, pay by area mapping, just defince the area you require on a larger map then choose to download that area at 1:25,000, paying by credit card. BTW I'm not advertising just saying it's a mighty nice feature. Anyway back to the 550 and its port sharing capabilities, the original 1.2 version of Anquet maps used the software GPS port COM4 which ment you could run other software at the same time, however with version 6 it will only run succesfully off the hardware port COM2 And it won't work with a port spliter either it will connect to one of the spit ports but keeps losing and regaining connection with the GPS. I've been running connectivity tests over the last few days as I had issues with some other software I'm using, so if you want to view the results try this link, http://www.aspecto-software.com/punbb/view...?pid=2265#p2265 I think the problems lie with the way the data streams are handled but I'm still working on this issue so expect more results soon. The Aquapack is to be recomended especially as it has a landyard which you can string round your neck or over the shoulder and look a bit like a techno-rambler! I like the idea of a high capacity power pack 2200mAh sounds nice, how long do they last? Anyway I'm looking forward to my first cache hunt at the beginning of next week so wish me well. Happy hunting M.
