  1. Thanks for that info. That is what I was looking for. You have a good point there about removing the batteries. Thanks for all the replies everyone.
  2. Have been reading a bunch of good info after doing a search. One question still thought. These batteries hold a charge for a long time. Only a 15 percent loss over a year shelf life. However, if they are put in a GPS or Camera or anything else and the device was turned off and not used for some time do they still last that long? Or being that they are touching metal contacts inside the device will the charge be leeched off? Kind of curious about that. Any info or personal observations?
  3. I too use my RAZR cell phone charger to run my 60 csx in my truck. Works great. And the backlight is on all the time.
  4. That was the ticket! Had to be something simple. I thought the list would just populate on the screen by itself when I went to Geocaches. Thanks!
  5. OK. another piece of info that might help. I tried Easy GPS and had the same trouble. I can receive waypoints from the gps with it but I can not sent any to it. It looks like they send but they do not get to my gps. Something is not set up right here or (?) hope it is not a device problem.
  6. OK, gps is connected to comp by usb. Shows connected in interface of 60 csx. I have all the caches I want to send to the unit set up in GSAK. All are selected. The gps is set up in Gsak as a Garmin with the usb box checked. When I click send it basically shows that it does and gives me the finished green ok checkmark. Red progress bar show 100%. But the caches do not show up in my gps. I spent hours with it yesterday and this morning going over everything. Can't figure it out. I can receive waypoints from my 60 csx gps to GSAK but they do not go from Gsak to my 60 csx. Strange. This has to be something stupidly simple that I am missing. Is a small amount of caches, 14. Any ideas? Leaving on a trip soon and I sure would like to have this data in the gps before I go. In case it matters, I have loaded CN version 8 NT from Mapsource up to the GPS so I can upload to the unit from my comp.
  7. Thanks Bus36. So if I can not do #2 above then I guess I could always download the seamless data and dot the roads and highways options. Might have to make two sets; one for uploading to my 60 csx without roads and one for Mapsource with roads; because I would imagine that those topos with roads might look a bit odd in my GPS with CN already in there. I think I will just try a big grid on the next one and see what happens. I won't know the file size until I try. Will post back. Basically I am going to try to get the Hill Country and Lakes around and way West of Austin, Texas and way out to near Johnson City. If that works I will go for the Big Bend Area in West Texas next.
  8. Well I actually made a map. Looks really nice too. My thanks to all involved in this. This is almost to good to be true. Not hard at all. But I have some questions. 1. Is the only reason to download the 50 meg or less map sizes from Seamless because of the time it takes to convert them and build the final map? Or is there an actual problem working with larger sizes? And the thinking behind that is, can I make the map any size I want if I don't care about the time involved to make it? 2. I hope this wasn't answered above, didn't see it. Is there a way to view these new topo maps overlayed on City Navigator in Map Source? Or can they only be viewed by themselves. Would be nice to see the area with the roads, etc, in place if I needed to. 3. Any way to have the program auto trim the water detail edges. Hey, never know til you ask. Working on a second one right now of a State Park I hike in. Converting now.
  9. If your water data covers the area then you can use it for each of them. Here in Western PA I let the seamless break up my contour data for a county. So lets say for Allegheny county I have four sections. Then for the waterdata I download the allegheny county waterdata and use it for each of the sections. Just make sure to trim the area up because you will have water outside of the contours. Hope this helps. If not just ask. Thats good to know. Exactly what I was looking for.
  10. Be sure to check your Junk mail folder as my waterways got tagged as Junk mail when they were mailed to me... Yeah, that crossed my mind and I have been checking it each time I check the email.
  11. I decided to try this and see how it goes. Getting the water data back does take some time. I got an email letting me know my data request had been received but not the data link email yet. A bit more than 24 hours too. Question, if I want to make a large series of maps by letting the Seamless site break up a large area that I can download in smaller segments, when I get the water detail can I just get one large area that covers the whole area I downloaded from Seamless and plug it in each segemnt from that? Or do I have to have a specific water detail for each Seamless segment? Hope that makes sense, am not real up on the technological terms and workings of this but I sure can follow directions until I do. I have a great looking mp file in front of me.
  12. My 3 from yesterday have done that as well. Maybe it's a temp glitch or maybe they don't update on the weekends. No idea and I wondered too. Am kind of new to the site so I don't know all the ins and outs of how it works. Maybe someone will pop in a give us the what is.
  13. Curious, I have not gotten started on doing a topo map yet. Just finished all of the downloads. But once you have a map made and go to upload it to your gps; mine is a 60 csx; is it like any other Garmin mapset and will overwrite what you already loaded on your gps if you don't upload everything you want on there at the same time?
  14. Have seen both the Ray O Vacs and Eneloops at Circuit City. I will most likely buy one or the other of those for carry spares. I still haven't decided on the higher Mah batteries yet. Does anyone know if those Duracell 2650's are the same as the Sanyo 2700 ? Thanks for the Ram Mount comments. Puts it in perspective.
  15. I am a bit flumoxed. Is there an online map where I can put in a latitude and longitude and have it find the spot? I want to use this format Nxx xx.xxx Wxx xx.xxx I can find maps like Mapquest that do decimal and degrees and variations of it but not this format. Odd, this is the format that all of the caches here are listed in and it's the format on my gps. Am I missing something? I don't want to have to resort to a conversion.
  16. Am trying to cover two things with one topic. Hope that is OK Batteries Have searched and done a lot of good reading. I have a 60 csx and am using NiMH 2400 Mah Duracell rechargeables that I have for a camera. They work fine. But I do need to get more batteries. Have read nice things about the Sanyo 2700's and have also read that Sanyo private labels them and they are the same as the Duracell 2650. 1. Is that true ? 2. How much will battery longevity increase going from a 2400 MaH to the 2700 or even the new 2900 that I have seen on the web somewhere? My compass is usually off unless I am walking towards a cache. Backlight usage is infrequent. Ram Mounts For the 60 csx is there any advantage using the aluminum rather than the plastic mounts? Their plastic mounts look durable. Is the aluminum that much heavier? Boy but that suction cup windshield mount is big. 3 1/2 inches. Is there a smaller one that I haven't seen or does that 3 1/2 not look as big on the windshield as I would think? The screen magnifier seems practical but does it really work well or is it Snake Oil? Lastly, I keep finding webs site that are selling the mouints piecemeal. Are there some good sites around that sell the mount for the 60 csx as a complete kit? Thanks everyone.
  17. My thanks, thats the info I was looking for. Now I understand how it works. I have CN version 8 NT on the way.
  18. I did a search and did not quite find the info I was looking for. Basically I am trying to under stand how this works. I have a 60 csx but have put no map packs in it yet. Here is the question. Are the unlock codes for map software tied to the serial number of the gps or does it have anything to do with the memory chip they are loaded to? Here is a scenario: I load up City Navigator from a dvd onto a 1 gig Micro SD in my 60 csx. Later I want to add more maps, topos, mexico, or whatever. I need more memory to be able to do that. So I go buy a 2 gig micro sd chip. Do I have to use a second unlock code to load City Navigator onto the second larger memory chip even though it is in the same GPS that I already unlocked the same map pack to? Or is Garmins software unlocked to the gps serial number itself and I don't have to unlock it a second time reguardless of memory changes? I am assuming that is the case. Hope that makes sense!
  19. Well I guess Garmins thread lock stuff works pretty well then. I will forget about it and just check the button every so often. Think I will run out and find a cache with my new toy.
  20. Well I just got my 60 CSX. Arrived really fast. Now I need to dig into the information that came with it. Simple question for those of you that have had one for a while. The belt clip button. It seems to have some thread lock compound on the screw. I screwed it into the spot for it as finger tight as I could get it. Did not use a tool to tighten it. How good is that thread compound? Anyone have a button come loose over time? Basically my question is is there any need for concern and should I take preventative measures and put some strong lock tite or other good thread compound on those threads?
  21. Well they will come out with that Extreme III Micro SD about the day after I buy something else. My luck works like that. I found the Sandisk 2 gig with a 15 dollar rebate at Zip Zoom Fly. Brings it down to $44 and change. And that is shipped. Mulling it over. Boy those 1 gigs can be had cheap. However, I will put City Navigator v8 NT and ultimately some topographical stuff on there. 2 gig seems to be the prime size.
  22. Thanks Storm180, OK I am familiar with the Extreme III. A friend has that in a Canon Digital SLR type Camera and it is pretty fast stuff. Doesn't look like they make it in Micro SD yet though. In fact I can't find any Micro SD faster that 9 / 10 mb sec read / write speeds. Will keep hunting.
