  1. I have gone out on my own a few times while away on business but for the most part, geocache with my son GeoJake. I enjoy the discussions, negotiating the best route, and celebrating the find with a partner as much as finding the cache. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey! Joba
  2. Besides the above mentioned (all great ideas), I bring a wad of baby wipes in a zip lock bag. They can clean up just about anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.

  5. Thanks Tahosa- I went on the site but couldn't find a route to Mike. Did see some awesome pics of your picnic though . Any chance you can email me email address our how to find his info? I am heading out to the airport but will be on email later tonight. jslamplough@directv.com I agree about the mountains~ I can do city caches in Chicago. I want to go vertical!!! Thanks again Joba ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  6. Thanks, I received the agenda for the week and it looks like Monday afternoon will be the time for me to get away. I figured I'd try a couple places for Max exposure. Thanks for the response Joba ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  7. Greetings from Chicago! I am traveling to Denver next week on business and always try to get into the mountains for at least an afternoon while in town. My son and I have been geocaching for a month and it seems to make sense that I explore some new areas while in Denver~ geocaching. Any chance someone please point me in the direction of a few of "Denver’s best" caches. I will probably only have 4 or 5 hours and am staying in the tech center so the South and West would be preferable. Anything specific I need to know geocaching in the mountains and state parks that differs form other areas? Thanks in advance for any assistance, Joba ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  8. I filled the survey out yesterday. The guide to all of the Kane Co. forest perserves sites was a great find. I was acually looking for that information in preperation of hiding our first cache. 10. I am using my Dell Axim. I got it prior to geocaching but it has worked great. It is more than you need for ceocaching but I also use it daily for work. I had a palm but swiched to pocket PC platform because it was easier for me to use. If you are only going to use it for caching Kevin917z has the right idea. There are threads with good advise about ebay on this site and also at http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  11. All- Thanks for the info on PocketPC connections- I can now get my AXIM running. Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/94183_1000.gif Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  12. I have a Dell Axim that I use every day. Once I got the correct software for PocketPC, I haven't taken a piece of paper with me on a trip. I am going for the GPS software next!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be nice to your kids....They'll choose your nursing home.
  13. There was an article in the Chicago Tribune and the next week, I saw a new spot while in Denver on buisness. I then did a google search of geocaching" and a the best hobby I have ever had was born. This has done wonders working on the relationship with my son. The conversations we have while walking through the wilderness have really made my summer.
  14. I did a test drive while out with my son this weekend. Very nice! I didn't have any problems with my Axim. Look forward to seeing the new release.
  15. All I can say is WOW. I picked up the SporTrak Pro this weekend and this unit is going to be perfect!!! I downloaded all of the maps for the area and my son and I went on an all day adventure. We found 3 caches. The SproTrak took us within 20 feet and 2 were under heavy tree cover. This unit is very user friendly. Creating Waypoints is a snap! Thanks to you veterans who suffered through my avalanche of redundant questions.
  16. Thanks all for your support. I am going to hit the Costco over the weekend with one of my friends that has a membership and pick up the Sportrak special. Next week, my son and I will be setting our first caches in Door County Wisconsin while on vacation. Thanks again for all of the advice
  17. Hey all- I borrowed my fathers Garmin GPSMAP 196 to take my kids out and see if they were going to like geocaching before spending the money on a GPS. Good news- They had a riot and can't wait to get out and set our first cache. They already have one of moms tupperware bowls full of old happy meal toys ready to go. Bad news was that I lost signal almost immediatly when going under any type of tree cover. Living in the upper mid-west, it seems like this would be the number one quality when looking for a GPS purchace. I see the SporTrak listed in other threads for a good sale price. Do they keep their signal under tree cover? If not, which do you think is the best? I am going entry level so I do not really want to spend more than a couple of hundred dollars. Thanks
  18. If Kat doesn't pick this up, I will. Please let me lnow Joel
  19. I'm exhausted! My eyes are crossed I very much want to get out of this office, out of the house and start caching. I just can't leave my computer. Problem is, every time I think that I have the right combination of GPS and mapping software and I am ready to purchase, I see a post or other information that changes the direction. Please help! I do not want to get started and then find out that if I had just bought (THIS), I would have got those great little features that make caching that much easier and enjoyable. I would like a GPS that will not need to be upgraded within the next 6 months and mapping software that can be used for both caching and personal (door to door) use. And as you can tell by my lack of knowledge, user friendly. Unfortunately, I don't know what I don't know. And until I get, going… won't know. Thanks in advance for any assistance. FFRP Sir, turn off the computer and take three steps backwards
  20. Thanks to both of you for your responses- It looks like the way to go is with a separate GPS unit. I posted the same type of message on an Axim site and get the same response. I do like the idea of using the PDA as a support tool. They make a waterproof case that isn't that expensive. Thanks again for the advice, Its time to go shopping
  21. Good morning all- After seeing segment about Geocaching last week on the Denver news, I have become somewhat obsessed with getting involved as soon as possible. What a great way to spend time with the family, get out into the wonderful world and have an opportunity to leave a local nature spot cleaner than when you got there. I have run into somewhat of a snag though. Whenever I make a larger purchase, I want to do as much research as possible so I don’t mutter the phrase “if I’d only got that one…” a week after I have bought something. I have a Dell Axim PDA. I also use DeLorme street atlas 2003plus with an Earthmate GPS attached to my laptop for work. I was going to try and get an adapter for my Earthmate for the PDA or buy a separate GPS for the PDA (one without wires) and purchase a mapping software like mapopilis. It looks like I would spend around $225.00 for my PDA to be outfitted for GPS. On this web site (offroute.com) there is a Magellan GPS 315 for $144.00. I was also looking into some of the used units offered on in the resale forum. It seems like I could be putting my PDA in harms way by bringing it out in rugged terrain but I have a hardened case that it fits in (although not waterproof) A couple of questions • Does anybody use their PDA for caching or has someone switched from a PDA to a stand alone unit and for what reason (or vice versa)? • Is the mapping software that comes with the unit adequate? • Are units like the Magellan (GPS 315) or the Garmin eTrex/Camo upgradeable? Is the mapping software that comes with the unit adequate? If not are the more advanced (and expensive) units upgradeable. • And lastly, what are the most important features you need from a mapping software? I apologize if this is redundant for some of the veterans. I tried searching the forum but really couldn’t find out what I really needed. Thanks in advance to the assistance, The FFRP (Fabulous Fox River Posse)
