Sorry to hear about your job loss Pooh. Congrats Brian for you new position.
I spent 9 months as a professional geocacher, but it didn't pay very well. Networking will be your best bet on landing another job, especially in this market.
Good Luck!

I Know my Famiy thinks I am a little off when it comes to Geocaching,
and even a little geeky, but I know they do not think I am a Di**
Dork or Pen**.
You could still be a nerd or a jerk.
-
Why do you refer to VULGAR SLANG??
This if you look it up is not a family friendly word!!!!!!
add the word to which I am refering,
DORK is the same as D**K
edit sp
You may have a point.
Main Entry: dork
Pronunciation: 'dork
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps alteration of dick
slang : NERD; also : JERK

You Know You Are An Obsessed Geo-cacher If....,
You spend a whole day geocaching with Greenback.

No....my family doesn't THINK I'm a dork, they KNOW I am.

Cool thread. These are some great real life stories. It has even hit home when reading my buddy GeoGeek’s story.
I stumbled onto this site a little over a year ago and it seemed like a great activity for me. I love the outdoors and outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting. This activity is just like hunting, but your weapon is a GPSr and your game is an ammo box full of McToys.
Not too long after starting this craze we call geocaching, I got laid off. This was the first time in 22 years I was without a job. This took a while to adjust to. I believe geocaching helped me through this difficult time in my life. Getting out and putting some miles on the leather helped relieve stress and provided a lot of time to think about things.
On the other hand, if I spent more time looking for a job and not out geocaching, I may have gotten back to work sooner then I did. Geocaching provided me a stress relieving therapy when times were tough.

Thanks Lep!

I picked up this little glow in the dark alien looking thing. It has a tag attached to it with the web address of www.travelingalien.netfirms.com on it. I haven't been able to long on to this site.
Does anybody know anything about this?

I have to agree with Markwell. Maramech is a great virtual and a cool area to explore. There are two more traditional caches in the area too.
Genius Loci has a great series of caches he calls Aesop's Fables caches. I had a lot of fun with these with Greenback. Highly recommended.

I too had many logs enter the ether yesterday. I finally gave up, and chose to log them this morning. I got everything from "Service not Available" to DNS errors. Talk about issues - holy crap. Anyway - I hope that these issues get resolved soon. There's nothing like composing a detailed description of a caching experience (like I did) only to have it disappear down the bit bucket.
I've learned to copy each log before hitting the post button, just in case. Try it....it will keep from putting your fist through your monitor.

If I remember correctly, it was 36 in Indianapolis, IN with help from five other very good geocacher/friends. The day ended with the cops telling us to give it a rest.

Headed up to Rockford with a couple of geobuddies and hit 29 caches on the 29th of February. It was a warmer than the usual February day. Couldn't ask for better caching weather. Didn't realize the number correlation until reading this thread.

Something like this should work. Just make sure it puts out enough watts to run you laptop.

Webcam cache close to home.

As of today, there are 3613 active caches in 57 countries...
I'm not sure what that means -- there are a lot more than 3613 active caches I think. There are around 50,000 or so listed, and I would think the majority of those are not archived. I guess "active" could mean "found in the last X days" or something...
Look at the date BeachBuddies.

is there any way to tell what number we are? (As in I am number 1200 to register out of the 14,000 registered?)
You are #27986

When I first started geocaching, all I would have is the coordinates loaded in the GPSr. It was too much of a hassle to print the cache sheets, and a waste of paper and ink. Definitely made for a more challenging hunt not knowing what you're looking for. Since then, I've added a PDA to my caching gadgets. Much more convenient and has other uses too.

Thanks for the tip. Will have to take a ride with the family and check this one out.

I had mentioned on the Yahoo group that I might be interested in hosting a December gathering. I haven't done any planning yet, but I was just talking with SWMBO about having one on Dec 27. I'll post it in the Yahoo group as well.
Placed TBA. Watch for an event page.
Markwell, is this event going to go forward?

I'm pretty darn sure that these items have been sold. SpongeRob should confirm this and lock the thread.

Greenback placed a cache called Tag that used customized dog tags as markers. You can make them yourself in a machine at most of the large pets stores (like PetSmart or PetCo).
The problem with going this method is that these tags cost about $6 a piece. Too much I think. I guess it all depends on how many you plan on making.
I've had good results using printed paper and laminating. I print the coordinates on paper using a pc and printer. Much more versatile and customizable. Of course, if you don't have access to a laminator, this will put you back about $80 to purchase one. Wouldn't take many dog tags to pay for it though.

Hello folks,
The initial post in this thread could be considered to be on topic if people wish to discuss adventures that would involve GPS use or geocaching, like a dream to use the money to finance a caching trip in as many states as possible, or to find a remote geocache like "As North as it Gets". Feel free to discuss things like that! CarleenP is thinking of her geocaching related adventure. Other contributors to this topic need to be thinking the same way.
Please, someone tell me this is a joke. Surely it is. Ha ha....funny one!

If you don't mind downloading your maps online, this will do the job. Can't beat the price either.
