  1. Yes but I live in Montana and there are lots of unreasonable hills! I would like to know how far I am hiking. Is the distance adjusted for the terrain? It just seems that my Garmin 60CSx should be doing this. Flap
  2. Hello all, I can't find this information in my manual. Are the elevation changes added to the trip distance. For example, if I climb up a 2000' vertical cliff, and go straight back down. Would my trip distance be 4000', or would the distance be 0? Thanks for the help Flap
  3. Plugging your 60cx into a different USB port than you originally used to set it up will require you to install the Driver again. Also for anyone having issues with their USB driver after updating mapsource I would recommend downloading the newest USB driver from garmin, the new one for the 60csx has a pretty fool-proof installer. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591 I did use the latest driver and I still received the message that the dirver install failed. However, I finally did install the thing by going into the advanced setting on the hardware wizard, selected the newest driver (it must have been saved somewhere) and got the dang thing to work again. Thanks for the help everyone. Flap
  4. Hello, I need some serious help. I updated to the latest version of the POI loader and Mapsouce two nights ago. I checked that the software was updated but did not connect my Garmin 60CSx. Last night I connected and I get a windows message "Found New Hardware". I try to reload the driver and I get a windows message saying something failed in the update. I can't connect to the PC. I went to Garmin and got the latest driver update, but it fails as well. I deleted the driver through the device manager, I then removed all Garmin software, then tried to reload the driver from my original Mapsource disk I received with the unit. I can load the software but still can't connect with the USB cable. Each time I try to connect the gpsr, I get the message "Found New Hardware".... I am at a loss for what happened. I have been using the previous version of the POI loader and Mapsouce for several months without a hitch. Help would really be appreciated. Flap
  5. Great!. I never thought about doing CSV files with POI loader. The term CSV triggered a memory of when I first did this years ago. I fed the CSV into Corpscon to convert from NAD to WSG datum. Looking back, it doesn't make much sense to get a few more feet accuracy on a big mountain. http://crunch.tec.army.mil/software/corpscon/corpscon.html Oh yeah just what I need. Another toy to play with!! I barely used my new GPS, I've been to busy making topo maps and POI files! Flap
  6. thank you GeoidPS. The good version is now available. Hello Cypherman, I have downloaded your latest version, but I can't get it to open my folder that stores the .img maps. When I browse to the correct folder and click OK, nothing shows up in the Source IMG Files box. I can't add anything to the Selected IMG Files box. I watched the tutorial and it seems straightforward but its not working. Any sugeestions? Flap Hi Flap! yes, your filename is not 8 caracters numeric (filename 8.3 DOS format) . EX: 12345678.img Mapsource support only numerical filename 8.3 GPSr are not restriction for a filename, if using sendmap20. The filename qwertyui.img , 1234.img and a1b2c3d4.img is not accepted with Mapsource, Regards Cypherman Hello, Cypherman, I renamed the files with the 8 didgit number used for Mapedit. I then loaded a small map and it works fine in Mapsource and loads to the GPSr, but when I convert a larger map, it crashes Mapsouce. As soon as I select the map in Mapsource the program closes. It maybe that I am unclear on your instructions about Levels/Zoom I have set up the map with the following: Level 0-24 Zoom 0 Level 1-22 Zoom 1 Level 2-20 Zoom 2 Level 3-19 Zoom 3 Level 4-18 Zoom 4 Level 5-17 Zoom 5 Running Mapset, would I put in the Level/Zoom entry the following? 17:18/6:7 This map is currently running on my Garmin Map60CXs and works fine by loading with IMG2GPS. I am not sure what is going on but I have to use your Uninstall Mapset function to make Mapsource work. What do you think the problem could be? Thanks for you time, Sincerely Flap Enter this level/zoom: 18:17/4:5. The first Level/zoom is the last define level/zoom in your img file. The last level/zoom is the next level/zoom that not use by your img file. This level/zoom is used for the overview map (global map). Regards, Cypherman Cypherman, She's working great!! Nice job, I envy you tech guys that have the ability to create such useful products. Good Luck. Sincerely Flap

Could I simply rename the file or do I have to resave the .mp to img with the new name? Thanks for the fast reply!! Flap

  10. Go to http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/ Enter state, feature class=summit, elevation limit. Thanks for the link, it shows the data of some of the peaks I would like, but it would be nice to have the data in a shape file. I can't believe this type of information isn't in a DRG or Shape file. The hunt continues.. Flap Mr. Cache, Just to let you know, I downloaded all of the peaks in Montana over 6500' elevation, saved them as a cvs file and uploaded them with POI Loader. Works Great. Thanks Flap
  11. GPSBabel does delimited text files if you describe the file in a style file. Maybe our local friendly moderator knows of GPSBabel style file for GNIS | delimited files. It may save you support headaches. i haven't had the time to play with GPSBabel, if it can convert the file, it would be sweet. Flap
  12. Take a look at your other thread Yes sorry about the double question, I didn't realize you had answered. Thanks Flap
  13. If you are able to get .shp files you can simply import them into gpsmapedit just like waterways. As for where to get the files can't help you out there. I have been looking for files like that myself. That is the plan, I just need to find the data... Thanks, Flap

  15. The only really I really have found was the trails on NG Topo mapexchange site. I used Gpsbabel to convert these for my custom maps. Hopefully others have ideas. I would also like data like this for my maps. Thanks, I will give it a try, It seems to me that the trails andpeak names should be in the GIS data but I can't find it there. I really would like to have the pack trails, and forest service roads. The Peak names would be great but I could live without them. Thanks Flapjackson
  16. Bus36, do you know where data with names of peaks and forest service trails could be downloaded and added to custom maps? Flapjackson java script:emoticon('', 'smid_4')
  17. Hello, I have been having great success making my own custom maps by using the info on this forum. Thanks to everyone involved. I was wanting to add some POI's like the names of certain mountain peaks, ranges and add in trails. Does anyone know where to download this type of information. Thanks Flapjackson java script:emoticon('', 'smid_4')
  18. '\Garmin\gmapsupp.img' is the full path starting from the root of the flash card. Example: If the card is seen as drive P: it'd be 'P:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img' i.e. gpmapsupp.img is in directory Garmin on drive P. The reason I mentioned sendmap is that it knows which directory to place the file in, which would rule path problems out. If it is in the Garmin subdirectory then I dunno. Hopefully somebody with more experience than me can jump in with the assist. I used sendmap and it put it in the same directory as the file I dragged into the directory. It seems that my gps is not seeing the file as a map? Problem solved! I used Sendmap to test the connection to the gps and it responded that no unit was found; I was not using the Garmin USB cable, I just connected the gps to a USB cable that already attached to the computer for my camera. Anyway, when I used the Garmin cable, I had to load drivers for the gps again and now I can upload the map Works great, the map is my first try, I can see some areas that I can improve on, so I am off to the races again. Thanks for the great thread, help and all Do you suppose the garmin cable has a different pin out? Flap

  20. Is it '\Garmin\gmapsupp.img' on the card? have you tried uploading with sendmap20 or similar? No, it is just gmapsupp.img Should it be as you have it? I did not use any software to load the file. I simply used the file from Cgpsmapper and changed the name to gmapsupp.img Flap
  21. Hello, I have been trying to drag and drop a custom map into my new Garmin GPS 60CSx. I created the map using the tutorial on this site. I can view the map in GPSMapedit. It looks good. I have downloaded a custom map file as well. I can see the file on the data card in the gps via USB. But when I go to the Setup Map page, I can't see either map? Am I missing something? Thanks for any help Flap
  22. Thank you for all your help. I have managed to create the >img file. I can view the file in Mapedit, so I know it is a good map, but I can't see it in my GPS 60CSx. I am changing the file name to gmapsupp.img and copying it to the gps. I can view the file there but I don't see it on the gps screen. I have gone to the map menu but I don't see the map. I have selected show all but there is no other map then the base map. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks Flapjackson
