  1. Stella, can you get in here! I can't find any of my glasses again. (How many times can one geocacher be featured in "you write the caption"?) "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  2. Never mind - I removed it. [This message was edited by SceneryGuy on July 02, 2003 at 09:10 PM.]
  3. Party at Blue Man's, aallriiight! Since most of the caches around here go for days or months without being found, it is amazing how many other cachers I've run into while geocaching. If you race out to get an FTF (First to Find), you might very well run into a couple of us, but please check with our geo-secretaries first! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  4. Did you click the "Download to GPS" button? Make sure you have the latest version of EasyGPS AND the latest Garmin firmware (for the eTrex Legend it is currently v2.50) go to "set up gps" and click on "Autodetect" If all else fails, read the directions. 5. Since this was my first find ever, I wondered when the pictures would be posted and how you would do it. BTW, they aren't coming up tonight (Friday night) You could also upload the pictures to the cache page and then insert the html code as follows: <img align="center" width="244" height="145" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/45054_200.jpg" border="0"> You can adjust the width and height with the "width=" and you pictures will be numbered _200, _300, _400, etc. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  6. I don’t believe a geocacher named ButtPirateis a friend of geocaching. He has one log and he seems to have stolen my TBwhich is part of a multi-cache. His occupation is listed as “Plundering Caches”. It looks like he stumbled upon a cache by accident and then signed up, but I have seen similar recurring cases in the Forums. I know this is going to become a bigger and bigger problem as geocaching becomes more popular, but are there any measures in place for yanking registrations? I know that you can search for caches without being registered, but are there any ideas on what can be done about Anti-Geocachers? "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  7. A few weeks ago, I left my office to go about 7 miles west and found myself driving almost 16 miles east to get there, just to get an FTF on the way (I didn't realize Hammack was in England at the time). So, I was wondering, how far out of your way are you willing to go to find a cache? "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  8. Dang it! I couldn't help myself! Does this count as a DNF? Is it kinda like finding a cache that has been archived? "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  9. I would definitely listen to ~erik~ since he has approved all of mine, but I have seen a wide variety of multi-caches. Here are a few examples: Right now I am in the middle of Fergie le Frog's Rainbow's Pot of Gold cache. I really like it, because each cache is different and with a different theme (hatpin cache, key chain cache, where's george cache) AND they are well placed caches that take you to interesting places around town. So it is worth finding each of the clue caches on it's own merit. I have a multi-cache, Scooby's Howl Creek Mystery, and I put out four travel bugs, each with a part of the coords, and as clearly as I could both on the cache page and each TB page stated that they shouldn't be placed more than X miles from a certain point. The coords take you to a location where you then find the coords for the final location about 0.2 miles (walking distance) away. The good thing is that I didn't have to find a bunch of new cache locations, and it kept people on their toes, hitting all the other local caches (we have a plethora of caches in Florida) before the TB's moved again. The bad thing is, as I found out in short order is, the TB's may go MIA, or people just hold on to them for awhile, and everybody starts whining and sending you e-mails like they can't continue with their life because they can't find all the clues. The Bird was sort of famous here for awhile, but he has since seemed to have dropped out of geocaching. But, he did several multi-s. One was a time-challenge of micro-caches, a couple were puzzle type caches where you had to solve a puzzle (that was usually quite informative) to get the coords, and one, you had to visit different locations that were not caches to get information to solve the puzzle. Or, you could just place a few caches and not even do a multi. Maybe later, you could go back and tie them together with clues. However you do it, do it well, and you will be appreciated for it. 10. I finally started using gpx2html and Plucker a few weeks ago and I love it. It is great being able to search in a variety of ways, having the pictures come up, and being able to use a scroll bar instead of going one page at a time in MobiPocket. BUT... The other day I hotsync'd my wife's Handspring Treo and about the last 15 caches (in geocache waypoint chronological order) didn't get uploaded. They didn't show up in either the index or on the cache pages. I tried it about three times, starting from running gpx2html again. Then I went to the HTML folder on my desktop, and ALL the waypoints (475) showed up in the Index.html file and all the waypoint .html files were there. I checked the memory on the Treo, and she still had 9.9 mb of free memory out of 16 mb total after loading the Plucker file, which was only using about 2.8 mb of the memory. I had also sync'd the MobiPocket file, and all the waypoints did show up there. It is hard to get an FTF if your PDA doesn't show the 15 latest waypoints. Is there a size limit in Plucker or HotSync? 11. Looks to me like they fixed it. This is the first time I have been able to get to the regular Public Profile since they changed the Forums format. Up until now, I would get a page full of data. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  12. Oh, hell yeah! MattCat&T and I are big time pro-cachtinators! You should read MattCat&T's logs from just yesterday (5/14) or from 4/1! I have skipped lunch to go caching. Blue Man and I played hooky from work to go do "boat-only" caches. I have left work at 10am when I saw a new cache pop up, just to get the FTF. That's it! I am changing my Avitar to "Pro-cachtinator!" "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  13. Oh, you are definitely hooked now that you see how easy it is! My first day of geocaching I was 1/5. If it hadn't been for that 1 I found, I would have a lot more time on my hands now. Give us an update when you get to 20. If you happen to come to Florida, make sure you load up your waypoints. You will come out bleeding, since most of our caches are hidden under saw palmetto leaves. Good luck and happy caching! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  14. I agree with Geo Packrat. I wouldn't want anyone to place a cache because they thought they were required to. In fact, I wish some folks would limit or use more discretion in placing caches. There are over 700 in Central Florida and I would bet that 1/3 of them aren't maintained. I also think that you should be required to have 5 or 10 finds before you are allowed to place a cache. I have seen a lot of caches placed by newbies that aren't really familiar with a properly placed cache or they placed it while they thought they were interested in geocaching for about a week and then never gave it another thought. And...some folks would just rather find them than hide them. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  15. quote: There are several of them here in Florida. There's usually a place to rent a canoe or kayak nearby. I like those type of caches. They usually have better items to trade for since it is hard to get to. JetSkier Gosh! Who would've thought a geocacher named JetSkier who has a Magellan Marine GPSr would like a "Boat Only" cache on an island! Actually, we love the boat only caches, and there are LOTS of them in Florida. We did thePonce Inletlast sunday and last month we went and did four "Boat Only" caches on Lake Toho in Kissimee. Rock On! (the boat that is) "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  16. I think it would be more interesting to let the dog chase the cat, and see if he can beat 25mph in a sprint! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  17. I would love to see who else is watching a cache. Almost every cache or TB page I look at and see "x# watching this cache", I wonder who else is watching. I have a multi-cache with 9 people watching. It would be cool to know if it was people planning on doing the cache, or people that have done it, smiling smugly to themselves as they see the other posts. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  18. To log this cache, you must hold your breath until the next cacher comes along or Dang, two yellow eTrex's and I still can't upload maps "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  19. I originally paid for a subscription, because I thought the site was one of the best run websites I had seen and wanted to keep it that way. I didn't care if I showed up as a Charter Member, I just felt it was money well spent. The Pocket Queries alone are worth the money. Last saturday, my wife got a babysitter so we could do "some serious, kid-free geocaching". Saturday by itself cost me about $50. Jeremy, do the new additions to the site include babysitters? Now THAT would be worth $30/year!!! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  20. I have place two caches. I don't have waypoint averaging on my eTrex Legend, so I walk back to the cache site about 10-12 times, then go back on a completely different day and take 2-3 more. Then I plot them in MapSource and look at the groupings. There will be three or four wildcards about 50' away, but I pick one in the middle of the group. Seems to work okay. So, theoretically, I could be precisely wrong in both cases! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  21. Right off the bat, I was impressed with the whole web site. I couldn't believe that it was so well organized and it could be used by anyone for free. Real "free", not today's internet "free", with pop ups, banners, cookies, blah, blah, blah (just look at "wheresgeorge", there isn't any room left on the screen for what I'm looking for, and I am convinced they are responsible for my latest onslaught of junk mail!) I paid for an annual membership more to support the website, than for the benefits. The WHOLE of the GeoCaching.com website is better run than that of Multi-million $ corporations who invest millions in just their websites! And, everyone that I have dealt with through GeoCaching.com or Groundspeak have been a veritable pleasure to deal with. Many thanks, and happy caching! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  22. I build...well...scenery, mostly stages for Business Meetings, signs and graphics, and the occasional commercial, movie or concert tour. Or, anything else that probably has never been built, doesn't have any real plans or has any real practical purpose. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  23. It was funny that y'all started making charts of your finds. It was really funny that y'all had a whole forum on how to save them as a bitmap and upload them to a host, just so you could post a reply. But, it is hysterical that you are actually comparing the SIZE of your charts! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  24. Let us know when it is due to air. "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!"
  25. So far, I have found two traditional caches in Central Florida that were in cemetaries: Conspiracy Theory and Perry (1920) They were both large size Tupperware containers INSIDE cemetaries. They both also had very interesting history lessons to go with the cache. I enjoyed both, but I imagine you should get permission to place a cache in a cemetary. Although it is private property, they are generally open to the public.
