  1. This post in another thread got me to thinking about changes in the landscape. I started this thread so as to not further hijack that one.

This is intended to be a then & now type photo thread from a benchmarkers perspective.

    Here is mine:

I went looking for OA1091 - SILTCOOS LOT. The area has changed so dramatically that I had to get help here writing a new go to description for report of the station to the NGS.

The area in 1936 is clear cut slopes and a lookout tower. In 2008 it is dense coastal forest. In this case only 72 years have passed to create a dramatic change.

1936 ( if you look close the benchmark can be seen below the center of the tower)

    2008

Other area views from 1936 can be seen on this geocache page.

Find a then photo and then compare to what is going on there today. If it is an impressive change post your find to the Waymarking category Photos Then & Now.

  2. I'll be coming over from Ireland to Springfield, OR for a week for work.

I'll probably have most evenings off, so wouldn't mind doing a bit of caching.

Can anyone recommend any nice areas which have clusters of caches nearby?

Ideally I'm looking for caches in parks or the like, rather than urban caches. Also, because I'll only have a few hours of daylight I would rather not have to drive too far in order to reach them.

Are there any unmissable caches nearby? There do seem to be some excellent caches that require a bit of a journey (covered bridges, Hell Hole etc), but I may have to leave those for my next visit.

    Thanks for the help!

    Thank you!

I did read that thread and got some ideas from it. It kinda concentrates on trips which require a bit of a drive from Eugene though, so it wasn't really ideal.

I've signed up to the Emerald Valley website and am patiently awaiting for my account to be activated.

Still if anyone has any info here it would be appreciated too!

I'll activate your EVC account in a moment.

When will you be coming? Would you be interested in a meet and greet event if there is enough time to plan one?

  3. So is this something that I can submit to Waymarking.com for others to enjoy while in the area? And thanks for all the information, you guys are better then any search engine!

Yes you can post it here in this category.

It can be a bit daunting if you are not familiar with the process but worth it I think for a mark that is unusual like this one.

  4.

I don't want to scoop TheBeanTeam, but when looking at one of their recent logs, I think this disk might be of interest to you. Flat, and maybe a little unusual (US C&GS 1917 magnetic station).

More pictures of theirs on the log page: QE0491

    Nice find & pictures, Beans!

Thanks for the kind words regarding the photos. I was so exited to find this one and immediately thought of this tread. It was the best mark of the day even though I found several very interesting marks on that outing. Finally I had something that I was sure would be of interest in this thread. The first thing I did was check here after logging it on GC.com and found that it was one that Mega Scooter had mentioned earlier in post #28. ;):anicute: Yep he was there before me. ;)

Since Mega Scooter didn't report it to NGS I was able to issue that report, so I had a wee bit of solace in the find.

  5. We had three or four days in the 90's last week. (Think the high was 99.) Then this week, I was out in the rain. Oh, well.

Harry Dolphin & TheBeanTeam are angling for a Rain Bonus, in the contest.

I was benchmarking in a storm last weekend that killed a guy under a windfall tree and capsized boats in the Columbia River.

    Edit to add link

  6. This location and its history was discussed in detail in the Benchmarking Forums some time ago. Here & Here

There are even some historic photos that were found in the Salem Archives of the location.

It is a very cool place with lots of history.

Here is my son The Bean Himself at the Meridian.

Can you find the Willamette Meridian line in your area?

In my area the Meridian passes through a campground east of us and through the small town of Deerhorn and unincorporated spot in the road east of Springfield. It would be interesting to get out in the woods and see if I could find some of the blazes they left on trees.

  7. This is a great spot. Definitely one of my favorites.

Tamolitch Pool is its name and it is a geological wonder.

The falls here are only falls during exceptionally heavy water runoff in the spring. A lava flow covered the river here and the water bubbles up out of the ground at this point.

The best access is at Carmen reservoir in my opinion. It is just such an awe inspiring thing to come up on the pool.

A good day of caching in the NW is......WOW! look at that.

  8. It does look great and is well written.

One problem that I do see is your listing of travel bug tracking numbers on the site and recommending that others list those numbers in a log.

Tracking numbers have been taken and used in virtual finds in the past and some TB's have been shut down because of the virtual logging.

Here is a forum thread explaining the practice.

Here is the most recent reference to the practice I could find in the forums.

  9. I'm getting it as well.

    IE 7.0

    WIN XP sp2

    (I'm at work)

At home I use Firefox and don't have these messages. Appears to be an IE issue.

I also use Firefox with Noscript as an adblock and have not seen this issue.

  10. The Bean Team, Thanks for the post, but your survey mark is a U.S. Geological Survey disk and not a U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey disk. Sorry, close but no cigar.

How bout this one. Does it fit any of your needs?

I suspect it is from the 1930's but the structure's corner stone is for 1909 and its monumented date is UNKNOWN.

  11. HELP WITH HISTORIC USC&GS SURVEY DISKS

    B. Flat topped BENCH MARK disk c1903 – c1924

The flat-topped disks were perfectly flat on top, not slightly convex. The upper case letters in the table represent the actual stamping on the disk. As always, high quality photographs are desired: sharp focus, even lighting, disk completely cleaned off, good exposure, etc. Submit all entries to this thread and include, at least, photo, year, state, and PID. I may wish to include some of these photos in my paper on survey marks, so I would appreciate permission to publish any photo submitted. I will give photo credits to the photographer.

    Thanks and good hunting,

Not sure it is the exact one you need.

    Perfectly flat stamped 1903

    QE0867 - Designation: 449 B

Permission granted if you can use it.

    Taken in Oregon in 2004.

Edit to add: OOPS, it looks like you want disks outside the dates given in the original post.

If so you already have an example of this one listed.

  12. Holograph--

Many thanks, as always, for the amazing work you do for all of us.

As for the westernmostness, well, we hadn't realized that possibility. So thanks for that too.

    Cheers,

Not only is it the westernmostness in recoveries it was the first for this county. I have been hoping to get down and make a recovery for over a year and just couldn't make it happen.

Great find and good job M&H. Congrats on the extreme find.
