  1. chimbisimo (adj) - Venezuelan slang for "really lame."

As a missionary for my church I lived in Venezuela for two years, from 2000 to 2002. We could communicate with our family via snail mail. However, a year and a half into my mission, we were given permission to use email.

It had been a year and a half since I had last touched a computer. As a result I had forgotten my passwords and usernames. I therefore went to Hotmail and tried to make up another account. But every time I came up with a name, I was told it'd have to have like seven numbers after the name, like "Iluvmonkeys0923." Lame. So I kept trying and trying... but to no avail. I kept thinking to myself, "This is really lame..." And then inspiration stuck.

And I've been using it ever since!

  2. The KML is intentionally off. Read up on it on the Geocaching KML information page.

I also have information on my Route FAQ that talks about how to not go over the limit with just scrolling around in the KML mode.

URL's not working. Mind fixing it?

PS: And why would the old version be better than the new? Running OS X and GE version 4.0.2722

  3. Anybody else have that problem? I have firmware 2.03 on a 500 LE I just got a few days ago. Works great except for this one issue. I don't know if it's cockpit error or a hardware problem. I even cleared all memory and started over. My xxx.gs file is on the SD card. I select it as the default geocache file and start selecting caches and marking them found. In one test, 17 of them. After a shutdown and restart, all but one has lost it's checkmark. Sometimes just switching around a few screens and returning to the map, a few of them will be unchecked. The xxx.fnd file in the geocache directory, a binary file which seems to list the found caches, has the right number of entries in it.

One possibility is that I use GPSBabel instead of Magellan-approved software to convert GSX files into GS files (I run Linux and the USB drivers won't install in my old Win98SE dual-boot). But the GS files from GPSBabel work fine in every other way.

    Any ideas? :P

I suggest not using the Geocaching system with the eXplorist 500. You can't edit them, delete them, etc like you can with waypoints. I just use GPSBabel to convert the files I download from Geocaching.com to .upt using GPSBabel's "Magellan SD files (as for eXplorist)", then use GPSBabel again to upload them to my eXplorist.

    I've written about this here.

This way, once I've found a geocache I'll just delete it from my GPSr. That gets it out of the way. Or if I'm doing a multi, I can just edit the coordinates instead of having to mark a new waypoint.

  4. I use a garmin 60 series gps. I have a Mac desktop computer and recently bought a Palm for paperless caching. I downloaded Plucker but now I see I need GPX Spinner to use with it. But it doesn't work in OSX. Any ideas how I can do all this with a Mac??!!?

    Ipod, save notes.

It's important to note that MacCaching doesn't currently work with Magellan (at least not with my Magellan eXPlorist 500).

For MUGs (Mac-using geocachers) using Magellan to go paperless on a Palm with Cachemate (with or without Premium membership), do this:

1.) Download file from Geocaching.com (.loc or .gpx)

2.) Use GPSBabel to convert to .pdb format (use the palmdoc file type - either from the command line or use this automator action: Click here) I don't like MacCMconvert because it's just ONE MORE app you need. GPSBabel works fine for this.

3.) Sync the new .pdb file to your Palm. I use Missing Sync.

4.) Use GPSBabel to upload the original .gpx or .upt or whatever to your unit.

  5. Greetings!

Oddly enough, I purchased a 500le from Tigerdirect.ca and it came with both the AAA battery adapter and the Lith Ion battery. I was under the impression it was only suppose to ship with the AAA adapter (not that I'm complaining)! Anyone else receive both?

Nope, mine only came with the battery adapter. Lucky dog.

You'll find it a great GPS.

  6. I'm new at the geocaching thing but I'm loving it!

As a Mac user I've seen that the link between Macs and GPS units is weak. There's a lot of stuff out there but it was hard to find, in different stages of completion, or didn't work for my handset (Magellan eXplorist 500). I had a lot of questions (what's a .loc , .gpx , .kml , .upt , etc) because I was having a hard time being able to do what I wanted to do.

Anyways I decided to help people like me - Mac-using geocachers, especially eXplorist users. So I created a website. that has reviews for different applications, ideas for uploading/downloading, etc.

.loc are Geocache.com files. They do not go on your unit.

.gpx files are geocache files. When on your unit they are found in your Geocache folder.

.upt files are waypoint files. When on your unit they are found in the My POIs folder.

You need GPSBabel+ or other software to convert, and you need software to upload and download from your eXplorist.

It's a lot of info but I think my site explains it very well. Please let me know if you've found something better.

    My MUG site (Mac-using geocachers)

    Good hunting!

    Nick
