  1. Where did all the easy ways go? And don't tell me the way of the dot com bubble :-)
  2. It seems all of the Map sites have changed and I can't seem to find this feature right now. How do you quickly get a coordinates from a street address. MapBlast and Mapquest used to have this right out front. Thanks for the info.
  3. Your last paragraph nails the the crux of the problem. As a geocacher you have to acknowledge that there can be human impact. If we all don't start thinking about what land managers think of all this then this activity is toast. The summer of 2002 is going to be a big deal. The numbers are going up exponentially and what land managers think is going to make or break this activity real soon. BLM is leaning positively right now but a few stupid geocache moves and that is gone. A few reports in the morning NPS report that are negative and the bad feelings just multiply. Park managers are reading this board. A few thoughtless posts about stupid tree hugging environmentalists and they come away with a not too favorable take on geocaching. If geocaching becomes confrontational with land managers then geocaching doesn't exist by the fall 2002. If geocaching is looked on as "cache in trash out", getting more people to enjoy the outdoors while helping land managers and not causing headaches for them then the sport has a chance. I belong to the Sierra Club and I also 4WD. Believe it or not 4WD is also a very low impact activity. You rarely go above 5 miles an hour as wou crawl through terrain. But people who 4WD are their own worst enemies. Their organizations are for the most part confrontational about land use. They don't have a clue about getting their way by being cooperative. And about 1% of people who 4WD are complete idiots who don't give a whit about what they are doing. And so 4WD trails are closing. If geocaching goes the confrontational route then geocaching is toast.
  4. or the Federal registry on Lexis-Nexis. Did have a nice write up in the Wall Street Journal on March 19.
  5. the 60 minutes story was about container shipping. How 2% of them are opened and checked. They did not go into the gps details but one could easily envision a dirty atomic bomb assembled in a foreign land and the whole container shipped to Newark for off loading. The GPS for detonation could easily ride near the top of the container with an antennea mounted on the upper surface of the box. Surround it with Nike tennis shoes. Could easily be done. The terrorist could set it off in the comfort of their home with tracking software that showed it was in port, (or on the GW bridge). They did not go into detail as to how easy it would be to make a dirty bomb with TNT surrounding some fissionable material. It blows up and the port of Newark is unusable for around 50,000 years. This would arrest our economy big time. Our entire economy relies on container transport. If we dissallowed it the economy is toast. If we searched every box our economy is toast.
  6. I grew up in the coastal town of Woods Hole. The late winter, early spring was not the time to go hang at the the local bar. It was full of very grumpy fishermen. Maybe it is that way with geocaching. People aren't able to get out there because it is too cold or too muddy. A suggestion on some of the flame baits that have started some controversies. Let's stop posting, "what do you think of this type (cache link) or behavior" where it is trivial to find the person that is being discussed. Keep it generic and then it will not devolve to ad hominem attacks.
  7. Gives an example and everything and I still failed to figure it out. But see, I was writing a grant until one hour ago, now I have use of those brain cells so it is now clear. EDIT: still no change?

  9. I have everything filled out but the only thing that shows up on that bottom line is "USA". Been that way for weeks. Never "took". Do charter members get a secret incantation to recite that I missed?

  11. Grasshoppa did not know punchline. quote:Originally posted by Atilla the Pun: quote:_Originally posted by WaylandersMA:_A buddhist runs into the Pizza Parlor and says, "Make me one with everything". The Buddhist says to the hotdog vendor "Make me one with everything" as he hands him a $20 bill. The vendor pockets the bill and hands the Buddhist his hotdog. The Buddhist says "What about my change?", to which the vendor replies "Change must come from within..." AtP

  13. Some more: Heading out on Saturday morning: Carpe cache! The cache is gone: Sic transit gloria cache!
  14. You could just post a link to a much bigger picture that hasn't lost any of it's clarity by reduction. Get iPhoto, an iDisk account at Apple and one of these cool new iMacs. Then you can make slide shows, thunbnail links to huge pics, easy as pie. The first two items are free!
  15. I would have had some nice waterfront property you would have been interested in. Oh well.

  17. Just clicked through and realized glenn95630 gave a much better description of creating a number. In thinking about it you could add numbers off a dive table. Not 60f/60m 90f/25m but ones you at least would have to look at the card. Say, if third dive, after doing Xft for 30 min then etc how many minutes blah your third dive. At least makes it educational and if you're going to 90 feet should know how to use the repetitive dive tables.

OK promise, I'll only shorten it to GeoSpot. That's a gret nick. It means you know where to find it. Short interlude: The World Champion New England Patriots were not always known by that name. Started out as the Boston Patriots. In 1970 they wanted to make a grander more encompassing name and they came up with the "Bay State Patriots". (MA is the bay state). The name only lasted 30 days until they realized that the out of town papers would run run sports headlines like, "Browns Woop BS Patriots".

  21. ArtDodge, Gotta agree with G-Spot that Bahamas do not want anything taken or left underwater. They have a major coniption if you drop an anchor that might drag in certain areas. But your idea is way too cool to pass up. You need to have someone go 90 feet down to obtain numbers. But what if the numbers are already there? For example: How many coral heads are off the bow of the wreck? How many windows in the port side bulkhead? Usually wrecks that are popular don't have much in the way of numbers, stanchions left because every thing that can be pried off with a dive knife is gone but there are probably a few things that are in multiplies. Then use those numbers, either fill in the blank or multiply sort of stuff to get your next coordinate. One of the things needs to be not obvious in any pictures taken by previous divers. 90 feet. 25 minutes without any decompression stops. Plenty of time to count a few things.
