Geocaching In The Movies
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to tubby and's topic in General geocaching topics
The newer version of Planet of the Apes. Walberg had the ultimate GPS/PDA. "Cache maintenance way over due. Needs cleaning and fresh swag. Took nothing, killed some muggles, destroyed log." Saw this the other night and thought of this thread when he was looking for the 'mother-ship'. -
Pc Pocket And Paperless Programs

EasyGPS, which you probably already have. And GPXSonar. GPXSonar is what you install on your IPaq to read the the cache pages. -
Need Ideas On What To Leave
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to AJ of Dunbar's topic in How do I...?
I usually keep a little stash of stuff I pick up from end-caps at the local dept. store. But most of my trades are items from previous caches. And of course Rainey' signature 'Magical Brass Belles'. We get those at a local hippy bead shop, then she puts her 'magic' on them before we place them. -

Cat Tail Falls cache in Big Bend Nat'l Park fits that description. Why, the entire park fits that description. Safe travels. And drop a line if you are passing through Austin, TX. -
Please don't let a little discipline stop you from enjoying these forums. It seems obvious to me that you are trying to perform a great service, but may have mis-understood the rules. You have just learned a boundary, that's all. Keep coming back. And don't give up with your work. I have cookies turned on so that I can spot new posts each time I visit the board(and I assume many others do the same). And while I don't acctually read every new post, I do skim each new thread. I'm sure if you keep one open thread, it will get just as much reading as if you tried to open a new one each day. <<Fatboy Slim puts $0.02 on the table and walks away>>

Closest Unfound Cache
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to Team DaSH's topic in General geocaching topics
I think I'm pretty much slackin'. MIA is less than 1000' from my house, and I still haven't done it. Why? Why not? Why ask why? -
If it's a compatability issue, you can change how XP opens an application. Find the .exe file for Easy GPS...right click and select properties...select compatability...and set it to 'open in windows 98' I am runing XP. I don't remember if I had to do this with Easy GPS, but I have had to do it with other apps. Good luck <edit> spelling

If you are using a usb port for active sync and a serial for your gps, then do this: Open active sync. Click File Click connection settings Un-check the box that says "Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port" OK out and it should be fine. I had the same issue and that took care of it.

6'6" drive a Honda Element...love it. Lots of head and leg room, even in the back seat. use a day pack I picked up at REI. Relatively nice fit for $50. when I'm shoe shopping I walk into the store and say, "show what you have in a 14". I then try on both pair... -

Palm Or Pocket PC?
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to Traveling Jones's topic in General geocaching topics
Goodwill Industries has a computer outlet here in Austin. They have a stack of old palms starting at $10.00. I know nothing about palm, but perhaps there is a similar 're-store' in your area. -
Palm Or Pocket PC?
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to Traveling Jones's topic in General geocaching topics
I picked up an Ipaq 3955 with a 256mg SD card and scads of software off ebay for $200. Also has the extra battery/flash card adapter. With GPXsonar I can load all the pages I could care to and still have plenty of room to run a game of golf, quake, sim city, and my family photo slide show, all while listening to a day's worth of music. I use my SporTrak with Mapsend Topo loaded for all my mapping, but could get a cable and connect the two. Just seems like more trouble than I feel it's worth. But I have considered one of the flash adapter GPSr units. They seem a bit flimsy to me. I keep the Ipaq in my baq-paq until I'm at the cache or stop to refresh my mind on the description. <Fatboy Slim places $0.02 on the table and smiles> -
Thats okay I thought another Cruiser fanatic had shown up. And I thought it was gonna be about a motorcycle.

Self-repair Magellan
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to Doc-Dean's topic in GPS technology and devices
LCD screen are really sensitive. We had a pocket D&D game once, and opened it up one night "just to see what's inside". Dumb misteke. After that the contrast was reversed. -
I have an Ipaq 3900 and a SporTrac Pro. I just drag and drop the gpx files into the Ipaq and use Sonar to view the pages with. I use the map on the SporTrac for navigation and the the PDA for the web...works great. On the down side...it takes away my excuse for missing birthdays and such.. The water resourses dept. at work uses an Ipaq with the Navman GPS sleeve attached to collect GIS data. They, of course, have the budget to afford Arcview for the mapping software. <envy> <edit> Also, if you do get the Ipaq, check out the themes refered to in this thread. I like them.

I Need Help With A Search Problem
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to GoJoey&GoPollyanna's topic in Website
OK, but how can I get those in .gpx format? When generating a pocket querry, you are forced to enter an origin and then it only gives the locationless caches owned by someone nearby. -
We find cool stuff all over. Rainey Belle gets her signature 'Magical Brass Belles' at a hippy bead shop, and I often get stuff from the discount bin at REI or another outdoor equipment store. But anytime we're out shopping and one of us picks up something we look at each other and say 'that'd be great to put in a cache!'

This thread should guide you to all the answers you seek. Good luck.

Here is the log of someone else who found a cache, but didn't know what it was he found: It was in the Rest Area R&R cache. We never laughed so hard!

Coordinates On Any Map
Fatboy Slim & Rainey Belle replied to Quest Master's topic in GPS technology and devices
Oziexplorer will allow you to scan images in a large variety of formats, and callibrate them using 2, 3 or more points. The more points, the more accurate the callibrations. You can also load geo-referenced .tiff images available online. For me, TNRIS (Texas Natural Resourses Information Systems) has the entire state covered with these files. Which are the same thing, only the callibration work is already done. Ozi explorer will run you $75 for the PC version, add another $25 and you can drape the maps in 3D, and/or add $25 and you can load them onto your pocket PC (3D doesn't work on PDAs). -
I have seen them locked by drilling two holes in it. One in the lid and the other on the side (penetrating both the lid and the side), both about 3/8" from the edge. And the lock could be run through the two holes. Of course, this would work so well for caches because it isn't water proof. The application I saw it used for was in the military, and the box held special keys. Which only the 'master key holder' had access to.

Infran View is a nice FREE software for editing images. You can set the pixel size, or use the "half" tool to shrink images.
