  1. Why do so many people take a "markwell" as something negative? There are numerous threads out there that are chock full of great information. There is nothing wrong with pointing them out to someone who asks a question. The next time someone asks about cool cache containers we've seen, do we all really need to start over? There is a thread out there with 10 pages of cool cache containers and there is no reason not to direct the person there. In my opinion its not the "Markwelling" that is the problem. When done in a nice, respectful manner it is very helpful. I've seen a LOT however, that are done in a condescending manner. Like getting your temperature taken, how the Markwell is administered is the key. One way is pleasant, the other not so pleasant. --RuffRidr
  2. I agree 100%. I can't stand to watch the guy. I rewatched part of the movie "Gone in 60 seconds" the other night because it was on TV. There is one part where he tries to get in the right frame of mind for car-jacking by listening to "Lowrider". Ugh, it was painful to watch. I don't think there is an actor out there that I hate more. --RuffRidr
  3. Great! So can I now start allowing gay porn caches? No, that would be against the law. That's CLEARLY against the decency standards of this nation. Since when is gay porn against the law? There is no real definition of obsenity other than "I know it when I see it." The point of the thread is that different people are offended by different things. I would agree that porn of any kind shouldn't be in a cache regardless of legality. I didn't mean that gay porn itself was against the law. I was meaning leaving porn of any sort out in public places is against the law. Sorry for the confusion. --RuffRidr
  4. Great! So can I now start allowing gay porn caches? No, that would be against the law. That's CLEARLY against the decency standards of this nation. Personnally I don't see how looking up something in The Bible is any different than looking up something in The DaVinci Code. They're both puzzle caches where you have to look in a book for clues. I prefer to look at at cache descriptions and decide whether or not I'd like to do them. I don't like other people doing that for me. This country has gotten waaaaayyy too PC. --RuffRidr
  5. Quit posting to this thread! Don't you know that it won't "just go away" if you keep posting here? Man, you guys make it hard for things to be swept under the rug around here. Seriously, if gc.com had any intention of opening this back up for Buxley's, it would have been done by now. It's not like it is rocket science or anything. I'm considering this issue dead. R.I.P. Buxley's Maps --RuffRidr
  6. I've been watching this thread with interest, but have never felt compelled to post to it. Well today I got an email from Groundspeak letting me know that my membership is almost up. So now it is my turn to add to this discussion. Last year I used Paypal. When I purchased my membership, Paypal pulled money from an account that I'm pretty sure I had removed. The result was an overdraft with the bank, and my membership ended up costing about twice as much as it should have. Of course, Paypal would do nothing. So now I also refuse to use them in any more dealings. I could use a check to re-up my membership, but I don't really like that idea either. I prefer to use checks only for face to face transactions. I can't remember the last time I used a check to pay for something through the mail. Jeremy, I believe your website is very deserving of the cost of a membership. If the means for me were available, I would re-up my membership right now. But if Paypal remains the only option available to me, I will regretably be forced to let my membership lapse. Maybe this is almost complete and I won't have to even worry about it. Also, does anyone know if I let my membership lapse, and then sign up again at a later time, will all my pocket queries still be set up? Thanks, --RuffRidr
  7. This would be a great addition to the website, and would help foster a sense of community. I hope this feature request makes the "short list" soon. --RuffRidr
  8. While I will agree with you that the customer service for Groundspeak leaves something to be desired, your calling us childish is uncalled for. Go back and reread your initial post. Then pretend it was someone else that wrote that initial message. Go and read the responses. I think you need to realize that it is you that is being the childish one here. As for hiding behind our nicknames, nobody is doing this. Using nicknames on here is more of a way of showing a personality than a way of preserving anonymity. If you go to any cache event, you will find this out right away. Later, --RuffRidr
  9. Very good issue. I especially liked the first section with the scary stories from cache hunts. The Wildman cache story is really spooky! I wish someone would post a little more info on this cache. What's the story behind it? Whoever placed the cache has to know more! --RuffRidr
  10. I agree with everyone above. Heck, just be thankful you won. --RuffRidr
  11. GC.com has been down all morning. What happened? I'm guessing firewall again since it appeared that the forums were down as well. What are you guys running that the firewall goes down that often? If I can be of any assistance, let me know. I do IS Security for a very large company and might be able to help. --RuffRidr
  12. Check out the arc filter. It basically does that already. --RuffRidr
  13. Mopar, You make a lot of good points. I live in a somewhat cache starved area, so I haven't noticed the problems you mentioned as much. I can definitely see why Buxley's is of no more use to you, tho. I have to disagree on GC.com's maps being any more useful however. With all those goofy icons clustered together, I can never figure out what I'm looking at. And on Buxley's you could just hover over the dot and see what cache you were looking at. On GC.com's you need to click 'Identify' and wait for the page to reload. Bleh! I sure wish there was an option on GC.com to switch to dots instead and enable the hover feature. It would make their maps 100x more useful to me. Also, why are GC.com's maps confined to such a small square of the page. I'd like them a lot bigger. I do agree that my own maps are the way to go. Total control of icons, zooming, info, colors, etc. Way, way better than both of the aforementioned pages. Sorry, I guess this turned into more of a 'Why I dislike GC.com's maps'. Maybe that's why I don't want to see Buxley's go away. Competition is always a good thing. --RuffRidr
  14. I agree also. This is what irritates me most. If GC.com were to provide the same functionality, then it would be no big deal. But no, they shut down all these sites and just leave us hanging. Or they promise us that that feature will be here some day. How long now have we been waiting for a new cache notification service? Frustrated, --RuffRidr
  15. Actually, I can read any of the logs the people wrote in any of my logbooks any time I choose, because all of those logbooks are in a filing cabinet down in the basement. (Except for the ones from the caches that were stolen, of course.) All of my caches have been archived for a long time. But your concern was online logs ... If geocachers who never found one of my caches want to seek my caches that are no longer there, and don't sign the logbooks that are also no longer there, I will be only more than happy not to read their logs that appear neither in the logbooks nor online ... and thanks for an idea for a new cache! OK, I didn't look to see if you had any active caches. I just ASSuMEd you did. Carry on then. I guess to me my favorite part of caching is the logs. I love it when I get an email that has a thoughtfully typed out log from somebody who found my cache. I also love reading the logs of other caches that I have found, and seeing if subsequent cachers had similair experiences. I therefore, try to give back to others by leaving them a nice meaningful log as well. Without the above, geocaching wouldn't have much of a point for me. Now, at one point you appear to have done the same. Maybe I missed it since I don't spend a whole lot of time on the fourms, but what happened to make you pull all your caches and stop logging on line? --RuffRidr
  16. Did you stop reading the logs of people who found your caches also? Because thanks to your choice, those people have stopped reading yours. Wouldn't it be great if everyone was as thoughtful as you? --RuffRidr
  17. What you're leaving out is that there are probably dozens of other site scraping webpages that were effected by this change as well. I'm sure most of these weren't nearly as nice on the site as Buxley's and the MTGC page were. Lumping Buxley's and MTGC site with these and blaming them for the weekend's congestion is simply not fair. The question I want to know is why can't GC.com work with these two sites so everyone is happy? --RuffRidr
  18. I agree wholeheartedly. The programmers setting up these "value-added" services are just trying to help out the geocaching community, not hinder it. Calling them thieves is a very big stretch in my opinion. --RuffRidr
  19. I would imagine he is. Why? It'd be a shame if gc.com is now somehow blocking it out. His maps are far superior to the ones on here. --RuffRidr
  20. I'm also wondering what the status of this is? This seems like it should be a fairly easy item to implement. I thought I saw once that this was one of the things being worked on. Is it a coding problem? Hardware capacity? Too many other pressing items? Lookin' forward to it. --RuffRidr
  21. If enhancement tracking were in place right now, I'd vote for this feature! --RuffRidr
  22. Oh geez! I can't believe I didn't see that there before. Now I feel like a huge dumba**! Thanks again for reading my mind well ahead of time ClydeE. --RuffRidr
  23. OK, I'm starting to build up a library of some arc and polygon files. When I want to use them I just open them in notepad and cut and paste into GSAK. That's not a big deal. It would be preferable, however, to have a choice of either cutting and pasting, or open an arc, polygon file directly. I have been using .arc and .ply for the file extensions, as I don't know what the extension should be for those. Do you have any plans for something like this in the future? --RuffRidr
  24. I'm for this change. Afterall, this is taking up bandwidth for something that is in no way related to Geocaching. As a way to help defray some of those bandwidth costs, make it available to paying members only. --RuffRidr
