Oh, THAT's an unbiased representation of the position of those of us who think stats cause more trouble than they're worth.

Ya, but judging by some of the more abrasive posts in the other threads, it's true.

The only problem with this is that you are relying on a 3rd party site or product to be around forever. What happens if one of these developers decides to quit developing Geocaching related software and pulls the downloads off of their site? Hopefully this won't happen, but as we've now seen with Dan's Stats page, it can. The best solution, in my opinion, is for GC.com to add these kinds of features into the fold. Make it a premium feature, or an add on, I don't care.

  3. I like the latest change. It still shows 'x days ago' for anything less than a week, which makes it easy to scan through and find caches that have recently been found. I applaud Jeremy and crew for the change.

This sounds cool. Looking forward to it.

  5. I've also got the same Target knockoff. Have used it for a couple months now without any problems. Works great for shorter hikes and for geocaching. The price is great too. For the price of a Camelback I could have bought 3 or 4 of these.

It's not a bad idea. Groundspeak could sell this data to a third party. Third Party then sells access to their site for a couple a bucks month to GeoCachers and everyone is happy.

Groundspeak makes money and Third Party makes money or breaks even at least.

Then we'd know it's not about competition, it's about the Benjamins.

I think if GC.COM produced a stats page with the same functionality as Dan's, it would make a very nice premium feature...and may even result in more people ponying up their $30 to become premium members.

Also, I don't agree with a system where users check a box that says "Yes. I think points matter." and only those people become ranked in the system. A system that only ranks some people, is not very useful. Besides, those don't care where they are ranked, simply don't have to look (but I'm willing to bet that many people who say they don't care, will look anyway icon_wink.gif).

    Why not have

    3. Put the stats up there, and let the people who don't care about stats check a box in their profile that says 'I don't care about stats' so that it will never show them any sort of stat.

Perhaps. Definately would not be as interested. I'm a competitive person by nature. I like to see how I'm doing as compared to others. I would still probably go after caches that are held in high regard and are often praised. I just wouldn't have any incentive to go after those crappy caches that seem to be prevalent.

Like I said above, I'd be way more selective.

It's a big part of what makes it "fun" for me. Take away that and all there is McToys.

Would you miss being able to view other geocachers statistics, especially their quantity of caches found, if this ability were removed?

As I've said in other threads, the big part I liked about Dan's site was that I could tell by the stats who the active cachers were in my state. Then I could see what caches they were visiting and what they were posting about them. You could find cachers whose opinions were similair to yours and go by them to decide what caches you want to hunt down.

  10. We use ours quite a bit. We always take our kids out caching with us. When the terrain gets too rough for the kids to traverse, my wife will often stay back with them, and I'll go find the cache and bring it back. The radios help keep us in touch if I am gone too long or whatever.

As it sits now I'd jump ship if there was another boat in port with STATS. GC.com, being the only game in town, makes it hard to switch to a competitor.

I agree wholeheartedly on all of the above. This site is sooo stats and it doesn't even know it.

  12. I just wanted to reiterate what a couple other people said about the Jeeps. You can get a pretty good one fairly cheap. Around here I've seen the 97 Wrangler 2.5 liter going for about $4500. That's not too bad. That should get around 20 MPG, which isn't great, but hey. They are very easy to work on. Especially if you get an older one. Before I had my Jeep I would always take my vehicles somewhere else to get fixed. With the Jeep I've done everything by myself. Which reminds me, if you get a Jeep try and buy a Factory Service Manual for your year, or at least a Haynes manual. That will become invaluable.

    Here's my Jeep:

    101_0108.sized.jpg

It's a '91 YJ. It had an inline 6 when I bought it, but that was showing its age. Now it's got a Chevy 400 in it. I plan on getting some beefier axles and some lockers on it before too long. Great vehicle for caching. Nothing beats the open air feel of the Jeep.

That's the number one thing I'd like to see now too.

LMAO. Watched that movie last week, and thought the same thing, especially when he was looking over his shoulder making sure no one was watching him.

Anybody know where that was filmed? That would be an excellent place for a cache!

  15. How about the state stats from Dan Miller's page be incorporated into the site. I find it a handy way to find out who other active cachers in my area are. Currently gc.com has no easy way of determining that. This site is about community afterall, isn't it? Also, on Dan Miller's site you can list the recent logs for a state or area. This is sure a lot easier than going through the pages and pages of cache listings (especially if you wanted a list of the Not Founds). I know a lot of you will say just use Dan's page then. I do, but if it were on the official site it would be a lot more accurate, and probably a lot faster.

I'm sure this post will get the same old, "its not about the numbers" response.
