  1. I'm a newbie and I've only been stomped once (by someone who hasn't posted to this thread. I just stomped back. Other thatn that one time everyone has been nice.
  2. Everyone but Prime Suspect - thanks for the advice. Prime Suspect - Sorry, maybe one day the rest of us will have 384 caches under out belts and we then we won't make mistakes by posting in the wrong forum. I'm sure the newbie count goes up after each Christmas and we newbies have lots to learn. IN the mean time ---chill.
  3. I take my four kids with me and they each want to items from a cache. I make each one leaves something in return but I'm not sure if it is ok to take so many items. Are there any unwritten rules for this? Thanks.
  4. Coscos huh? I'm out here at Butler and Hodges in my other life as a Sr. Programmer Analyst. There's a Bono's BBQ across from the Coscos and maybe we can meet for lunch sometime.
  5. Ivan, If all you take with you is "Garmin eMap 32MB memory, Rockport hiking boots " then I bet it gets awful cold in them thar woods.
  6. I used EasyGPS to download all of the caches in my area at once as this keeps them in the same .loc file. Next I added my Home waypoint. I set Home as the active waypoint as this lists the miles to the other waypoints using home as the refernce point. Next I sort on the "Distance to Avtive Point" to get things in ascending distance order. I right-click the ones I want to hunt for and send them to the GPS. After finding a cache I list the date found in the comment field as this allows me to see at a glace what has been found. There may be other ways but this is the cheapest and easyiest that I've found so far.
  7. Welcome Ivan! I'm in Jacksonville also and I logged the Tomahawk Park cache last Monday. It was my second for the day and my second ever as last Monday was our first attempt. The wife and kids really enjoyed it and hopefully yours will to. Try DJ's Delite if you want one that you can take the kid to easily.

ClayJar, I'll volunteer my services for helping with a PPC version. The only caveat is that I have moved all of my development to .NET and so I would be using the SDE tools for developing it. I've been thinking about doing something similiar to a combination of Wathcher and Geocaching DB for the PPC platform. So far the only thing holding me back is that I've only been into geocaching for a week now and I figure that I need a little experience to determine what functionality I need to implement.
  9. Asked for and received a Legend from the in-laws for Christmas. Did two hunts yesterday with great success.
  10. I think Fizzymagic's idea of a multicache is a great idea. Cavess - I also think it would be agreat idea if the NSS would put together and post a one page document explaining the sensitivity of caves along with some dos and donts about how to treat a cave. Anyone hiding a cache in or around caves could include that in their cache and so educate anyone finding the cache. But then I'm new to this and most of our Florida caves are under water so what do I know? ;-)
  11. Thanks everyone. Sluggo - that works great. I had previously tried to drag-and-drop but in the tabbed/"full window" mode and that didn't work. Thanks again.
  12. Have gotten the download to EasyGPS to work but everytime I download coordinates I get a new location docuement. I want all of my waypoints ion the same document but I can't find a way to get the download to do this or a way to copy to a waypoint to insert into another document. Can anyone help?
  13. Got the Legend for Christmas (actually a late Christmas on Friday). Saturday stumbled onto geocaching and today took our first hunt. I took the wife, 4 kids and a friend who was visiting from California. I described the concept to them and they thought a "treasure hunt" in the park would be fun. The first one was easy after I figured out how to navigate using the GPS and a compass. Still need to practice navigating with the GPS. Before leaving the house I was looking at caches in our area and my wife saw one listed at another park about 10 miles from home. She suggested that we take that one with us also and it turned out to be a good idea. After finding the first one so quickly the kids wanted to do it again so we drove to the other park. This one was a little harder to find but that was my fault. The cache was NW of our location and there were two paths - one running west and one running north. I took the north path and that meant more cross-country hiking through the brush. If I had taken the western path the cache would have been an easy find about 20 feet off of the trail. Next time I'll listen to my wife. After reading about caching I thought it would be fun and a great way to get the whole family outdoors. After today I thing I managed to get the rest of the family hooked and that bodes well for me.
  14. I also asked for one for Christmas and my in-laws came through for me. Haven't been able to hunt for a cache yet but I plan on trying one tomorrow. I'm hoping to get my sons involved.
