  1. quote:Supposedly they never saw those lights until they started looking at the photos. Which fits perfectly for the reflected "eye-shine" light such as from an owl or a raccoon; you won't see that shine without a light source directed towards the animal. The pictures look more like raccoon eyes than anything else, as their eye-shine is yellow-gold whereas owls tend to have reddish eye-shine. 2. quote:So my question is what would you have done? We just left and decided to come backe at a later date. He wasn't nude and it doesn't sound as if he was doing anything to disturb anyone. I'd say you did exactly the right thing -- you left him alone and went away. I probably wouldn't pay him any attention, although I'd probably not visit the cache while he was there. (To protect the location of the cache.) Barbarian - Founder of the Barbarian Illuminati Don't make me use the mind control laser on you! 3. quote:Some other geocachers joined us at that point. Turns out they came early, saw me in the hat as described, then figured I had to not be the geocacher in question because I was female. Maybe it's just the crowds I hang out with, but I've never understood this sort of thing. I guess in some parts of the US it is true that men significantly outnumber women in technological fields and in other "geeky" settings; I'm just glad to say this hasn't been my own experience. (For which I am happy!) Some of the best IT people I know are female: programmers, network administrators, and more web designers than I can count. I know numerous female comic collectors and role-players. Just over half of the members of the ConCom for Duckon XII are female. (Can I point out that Duckon is one of the best conventions here in Chicago? ) Barbarian - Founder of the Barbarian Illuminati Don't make me use the mind control laser on you! 4. quote:Also, In order to log a find, must one actually TOUCH the marker, or is visual confirmation sufficient? For instance, you see a disk, but it is three feet inside a fence and you can't get to it. I don't think there's any real requirement per se, but I know I will only log finds that I can photograph. As has already been mentioned, stations are sometimes out of reach (spires, water towers, etc.), but are perfectly visible. I haven't logged two or three such stations near a client site specifically because I keep forgetting to bring my camera with me when I go out there -- even though I see them at least once a week! 5. quote:(I also have a number of benchmarks that I am sure are destroyed [description was "mounted in railing of bridge", bridge was demolished (except for support pillars) and reconstructed several years ago] ... but again, do they care to hear from us on that? Yes, but be sure to pull up the report for the benchmark from the NGS and make sure that it's not already listed as destroyed. (The GeoCache Benchmark FAQ mentions this already.) Also note that in most cases you likely shouldn't list a station as destroyed without photos or other suitable evidence to submit: quote:2) If you did not find the actual marker, then you should enter notes concerning evidence of its possible destruction as text records and select "Not recovered, not found" as the condition of mark. (And read the rather well written document on digital photo requirements before sending Deb Brown your pictures!) The only benchmark I've reported so far was quite clearly not there anymore. We found the location easily enough, yet the described 140 FT tall water tank was no where to be seen. We did, however, find a 15' diameter concrete ring exactly where the tower was supposed to be. "Gee, I think we done found it, Maw!" Still, since I lacked photos that conformed to their standards, I submitted the station as "Not recovered, not found" with a description of what I found. Sooner or later, I may return to the site and take suitable photos. At that point, I may submit them and update my report to destroyed. 6. Looks like I'll have to go back to one I logged as "couldn't find it" and log it as a find. (Once I go back and get a picture, of course.) It was my first benchmark and I thought I was looking for an inscribed bolt. I've mostly found disks, towers, spires and other 'obvious' stations so far. As for the pointing out benchmarks, I have to say that my experience has been the same. My wife enjoys caches, but usually doesn't come along for benchmarking. Oh well, I guess it's a Dog thing and not a Raccoon thing! Barbarian - Founder of the Barbarian Illuminati Don't make me use the mind control laser on you!
