  1. My speeling is pretty bad too. But I like Netscape, anyting oot there for me?
  2. I was out geocaching with a friend and when we got back to camp he said he couldn't find his GPS and must have left it at the last cache. So he and his wife head back to find his GPS while we watch the kids. Well they are gone for a long time and we start joking about what could be taking so long. When they get back, sure enough they had gone out and found another cache. One we had skipped because it was to hard for the little guys. Ever since then I always ask him before we leave a cache "Got your GPS?".
  3. I was looking for the kind of mount they put in police cars to hold a laptop. When I get my laptop I want to take it caching. Seems like the police would have to have a pretty secure system. Aybody know where to get them?
  4. I thought me wondering around in a corn field with my GPS was topical. You see I'm looking for a geocache, but it's in this really tall corn, ........hey did I mention that? Well now I can see why you missed the humor. How about this. Two geocachers are out in the desert looking for a cache. One sits down for a rest and gets bit on the butt by a rattlesnake. His partner breaks out his first aid book and reads the section on snake bite. "Make two incisions over the fang holes and suck out the venom." The snake bite victum is getting worried and ask "What does it say, what does it say?" His partner says "It says your gonna die."
  5. I think we ate at a really good resturant in the area near that cache. I didn't cache at the time, can't wait to go back to the midwest with my GPS. There are a lot of caches out there. I have this mental image of wondering around the corn fields with my GPS in hand.
  6. Very nice! I can't wait for friday to get back out caching. So mtn-man where on the lake was this cache? I was in Michigan City once and went to the shore. Looks like there would be a lot of great places for a cache. While I was looking at the picture I got to thinking about the "Smith River Beach" cache in N. Cal. We did that one with my 73 old mother. She dosen't have a gps but loves the hunt, especialy when my sis and her kids are along. They started geocaching this summer. We took them to find "Royal Flush" while we were all camping together. My brother-in-law bought a Sportrak the next week. Turned out to be a great summer, we spent more time as an extended family than we have in years. I'm thinking about caching my brother-in-laws present and just giving him a card with the coord.'s Now that would be funny!
  7. Cough up 30 bucks and I'll tell you the seceret! Just kidding, members who just use the site are active users. Paying members are premimum or charter. There's a sort option bar at the bottom of the members list. Play with it!
  8. ...and it requires you to trade... A SHRUBBERY!!! --RuffRidr If you ever go to Huston look for; Bring Me A Shrubbery!
  9. I have owned a Legand and a Magellian Platinmum. Loved the Garmin, but I like the Magellan better. Two main factors 1 - Much better reception when driving, the Magellan recieves in any orientation*. 2 - The larger display is easier to read while driving. *You can also add an external antenna, you can't with low end Garmins. I bought my magellan on a special deal and got the topo map cd free, so it was only about $50 bucks more than the Garmin with no map software. I did have to buy a SD card before I could use it though. That was $50 for 64Mb, so it was actualy $100 more for the magellan. If I could finagle it off as a busness expense, I'd go for one of the higher priced models.
  10. Living in Nevada poker chips were my first choice. They are a bit pricey when custom stamped. Unstamped they run $50 /100. "Customized", your initials and a denomination, run ($80 - $125) / 100. Set up charges run $95 and up depending on how fancy you get. Twenty Five cent nickles start looking good pretty quick.
  11. Avery makes magnetic laser printer cards. Add a layer of Clear-view packing tape to waterproof. Both items are available at Office Max, Staples, etc.
  12. I was thinking about wooden nickles. You can get custom nickles printed for $96.95 / 1000. But I was thinking the generic single sided type would work. Then you could get a rubber stamp made to customize the other side. I think a custom stamp is around $10, or you can make one pretty easy if you are the artsy type. Here is the pricing info for "blanks"; "Only $18.00 per pound (About 160 Wooden Nickels) Minimum Order 1 pound Mix/Match your order in 1/2 pound increments Shipping Charges for UPS Ground Service to Continental U.S. Street Addresses and APO/FPO 1-2 Pounds - $ 9.71 3-4 Pounds - $ 10.24 5-8 Pounds - $10.88 2nd Day shipping and Next Day shipping available at additional charge" Here is a link. I just did the math, 1#(160 pcs) with shipping and a stamp is about $.23 each. Not to bad. If you make up a team you could order volume and share shipping. They have already done the Geocaching logo as a custom, if you have the bucks to buy custom. Maybe if they get enough interest they might add the logo as a standard.
  13. Let me see......... I pick......... the burnt out bulb!
  14. "I am ready to make a buzillion bucks. I have developed a piece of software that not only filters out caches by container, but will let you know if you are going to enjoy the find. It also tells you which movies you will like and what kind of wine you will enjoy. " Point 1) How the heck will I know if my cache is something you will enjoy finding? The two pack a day guy probably won't like a cache on top of a mountain. Maybe a cache is placed by a garbage choked pool to make you think. "We got a bunch of stuff off the free table at a garage sale put it in a cardboard box wrapped in a garbage bag. Then we hid it under the only bush within 100 feet of the coordinates. What do you mean it's lame? " Point 2) Lame is in the eye of the beholder, haven't I heard that before? BTW I happen to think the crayon colored placemat is a fair trade for the golfball from a trade show, they both ment something to whoever put them into the cache. "Guess I'll spend my lunch in my cubicle again, sure wish there was a cache I could do today. " Point 3) There aren't many caches around here of any kind. I do 'em all. And I've pretty much cached out the area. I am now restricted to caching on weekends when there is time for a car ride out of town. I'd love a few micros I could do on my lunch hour or after work. Carefull what you wish for, micros could actualy be banned.
  15. I have it on my list now, probably wait till spring to try for it since I'm not much on snow. I saw Abe was FTF, there's a suprise. I'm wondering who will be the FTF for the Fordyce Creek Trail* cache. This was csamayfield55's first cache. My first cache is in a remote location and gets maybe one hit every couple of months. Probably a lesson here somewhere. I wouldn't necessarly go to the extreme of a "lame micro in the local playground", but you can make an interesting urban cache. My favorite is Secret Lunch Cache I have been eating lunch within a couple of hundred yards of this cache for years and never knew about the "Secret". Right now I have two remote caches, two "local" caches and one urban cache. I actualy like the logs I get for the remote caches best, someone really went the extra mile(s) to log them. It's nice to get the (almost) daily log notifications for my urban cache to. Maybe the answer is a good mix of cache types? *Fordyce Creek Trail is rated by many as tougher than the famous Rubicon 4X4 trail.
  16. What you need is a real fanatic. I have two FTF's, and we have some (one) real avid FTF'ers. How did I snag mine? One I got because I found it on a cache search before I left for work and took "lunch" at 8:30 am. The other I got because I read the log at 10:00pm, mrs rusty said no-way was I going out to the top of a mountain in the middle of the night, so I got up at 4:30am. Drove across the valley in a topless four by four in the freezing cold then ramboed up a nasty dirt road to avoid the time consuming hike. I found the cache about 1/2 hour before the local FTF king. See all it takes is a little dedication. The frontal lobotmy probably helped too.
  17. I use Sacagawea dollars as my signature item. I figured out early that most stuff in caches comes from the dollar store or McDee's so I thought a Sac$ would always be at least an even trade. Most times a just sign the log and leave a Sac$. I also liked they way my niece and nephew's eyes light up when they get one. I'm commited to this sport now so I'll be moving on to another (less costly and more custom) item soon.
  18. Around here the pink tutu is reserved for the NGA GOTM. According to the Nevada Geocachers Association by- laws, " The geocacher designated by popular vote and arbitrary decision of the board of review as Geocacher Of The Month (GOTM) will, whenever participating in any geocaching related activity, including but not limited to; reading cache pages, hunting caches, logging finds, browsing the NGA, or any other geocaching related forum wear the official GOTM pink tutu and diamond tiara." By concensus we decided that many members should wear the tutu in addition to thier normal(?) duds. I made some of that up, we don't have any by-laws, or board of review. Many of our members really shouldn't wear just the tutu though. One thing I think we all agree on, everybody looks good in a diamond tiar, in spite of the fact that it was recently discovered to be paste. And I like the accordian idea, lots better than the tuba I was going to suggest.
  19. You might wonder why anybody would watch a cache. Here is why I put a watch on a cache. New caches, just to see who logs the first to find. Caches I placed with someone else where they "own" the cache. Event caches, just to see who is going. Travelling caches, so I can try to catch up with the %#^%# thing. Caches I logged as CNF (could not find), if others log finds I go back and try again. If they get archived I feel better about my cach finding ability. By The Way you might check out this link for more on nettiquette. This site is more e-mail oriented but many of the rules apply.
  20. I was suprised only three cachers mention Maps. I carry the Delorme big book of topos for Nevada, and the Nevada-dot road atlas. The second one dosen't have topo lines but shows every cow path in the state. Living in the Sierras I always carry the standard desert and mountain emergency equipment in the car. We always hike a lot so I just added a few things when we started caching. I keep this stuff in a fanny pack inside my day pack, since most caches are a short walk. GPS extra batteries Digital camera carried this anyway but I keep it in the fanny pack now. cache swag extra batteries A few cards with the URL's to the local cachers associations printed on them. Sacagawea Dollars (my sig item). Pen/pencil Mini Mag light, I'd rather look in that hole first thanks. Small pocket spiral notebook to note my finds and trades. Leather gloves, lots of things that sting, bite or poke in this area. 35mm container with a couple of bandaids, sometimes I forget to put the gloves on. Did I mention extra batteries? After reading this thread I am going to add a Cache first aid kit. (Thanks for the idea briansnat.)
  21. I ran into one of those at a cache event I attended. Hehe. How did it work? I'm always looking for ideas for event caches.
  22. Lots of duck hunters around here, I actualy considered a duck decoy cache. I got that far away look in my eye when I saw fake coyotes and bobcats around the pond down the street. They were trying to keep geese away, the geese were using the coyote for shade.
  23. Okay so now I'm doing a double reversal. Hey look at these cool containers! Oh Yuck thier specimen cups! Hey somebody thinks its a cool idea!
  24. LMAO! How about "Yer'in big trouble!" or maybe "Condition of Employment".
  25. I think that if you stay away from the Oatey brand you can get test plugs cheaper. Just a thought but test plugs don't have to be used just with PVC pipe. I have a cache that isn't PVC, I use a test plug to seal it. Not sure about rust, it's been pretty dry in the Sierras this summer. I guess I'll find out after we get some snow. I bored a hole into a tree limb with a 2 1/5" forstener bit and sealed the opening with a test plug then stuck that end under a fallen tree. A couple of points: No one could confuse it with a pipe bomb. It is already camo since I picked it up from the forest. It drove a couple of local cachers crazy.
