  1. As some of you know, I have my own signature coins. I now have approximately 30 of these coins out in circulation. Of these, 4 have goals/destinations. All told 12 of these coins have gone AWOL since I started releasing them this last November. People take them from the caches they're placed in, but never log them in the cache logs or let me know that they have them. Unfortunately, the same coins also cover the ones that were headed for specific goals (BTW - they are marked as having goals). I am not looking for answers here, as much as I am venting about this. I feel that if a coin/sig item/TB has a goal, people should do what they need to - to move it along. I don't mind that the finders want to keep the coins. But, don't keep the ones that you find out have goals! Any thoughts on this?
  2. Hey - that sounds like my wife. She thinks that it is the most geeky hobby... (other than my ham radio hobby - she is convinced I am trying to talk to Martians). Can't stand it, won't do it, doesn't think I should, etc... To make matters worse a local newspaper did a story on the habby and me that painted me in a bad light. In a nutshell, she thinks I am a nutcase. Keep in mind, we have a wonderful relationship, and do lots of things together. We have been married for 18 years, but this is another one of those things... she knows to stay away...
  3. You know I had not considered that problem. When I first installed Direct Route, it did query me for the serial number. But I also just put the map into a second unit and it seems to be functioning fine on that one.... I think.... I will check it out tomrrow and report back.
  4. My only thought about this is if you have more than one computer, be aware that you can only run the software on one at a time. Also, with my Meri Gold/5.12/128M SD I now am suddenly having trouble with the GPS losing the detail map. I have not had time to figure out what is goin wrong, but there is no fine detail (smaller streets, etc). It is as if I removed the SD card and am using the "built-in" map. Hopefully tomorrow I will have some time to check it out. There is also another thread about these issues in this forum.
  5. Well, at least it will help the rest of us move up the find-count rankings...
  6. You need to tell the unit to use the map. Try this: MENU>CARD UTILITIES>CHANGE MAP It doesn't seem to fix the problem. This is an interesting problem. I just noticed yesterday (Using Gold with 5.12 and Direct Route) that my map detail isn't showing either. In fact I had selected a WP about 5 miles from location and it told me that it was outside of my map detail. The odd part is that I have most of SoCal loaded in the GPS (Am using a 128M card). Tomorow I am going to delete the detail00.img file and try creating a new one with Direct and if that isn't enough then I will go and try the old Topo. If that works then I wil be REAL upset.
  7. The good news is that you do not need to learn Morse Code anymore to get a Ham ticket. You can get a Tech ticket with no code and get on VHF & UHF.
  8. Man! All I got for Christmas was an ugly shirt and three books I had already read...
  9. An Update: Thanks 4agers for helping me get this one!
  10. Mopar - having come from a design background, I will be the first to tell you that it is always a balance of technologies. The final solution is to design for the majority of your potential viewers platforms as well as their access speed. Very often I will design a site the has 2 or even 3 ways into the site. Low or high-bandwidth users, and flash or no flash users. On my caching site I opted to design for people using IE5 or higher, dial-up, and I made sure to use minimal Flash as most people have MMF installed. Remember, that the idea is to convey the message in the most memorable way, not the most anoying. To my eye, layouts like what we are talking about drive me away. My impression is that they threw it together... my 2c worth. BTW: my site is Vacman's Geocaching Page Feel free to tell me how ugly it is
  11. Well, you can't really say that there have been no caches there. I remember Flash Point, Rose Garden, and there are also a couple of virtual caches near/on the USC campus. Now I do realize that the USC campus is not really South Central, but.... walk 2 blocks south and you will see what I mean. Also there is that really cool/strange/scary little chicken resteraunt on the SW corner off-campus.
  12. I am actually using 2 different progy's from Maggellan. I usually use their Mapsend Topo, but I am also using their newer Mapsend Direct Route program. My only complaint with the new Direct Route program is that they now require that you have the CD in the computer to start it. I have 2 computers, and it will only install/run on one at a time.
  13. Well, then you might the perfect person for this. All you have to do is to get to W 082° 26.26 N any coord you want. Example would be : W82° 26.260' N39°56.740' That is on the I70 near Lancers Rd. But it could be anywhere North and South of there. Make sense? Again, the cool part is you go there, take a picture of your GPS e-mail it me, e-mail the cache owner, and we both get to score a find.
  14. This is the locationless cache list I have been working off of lately. uhh... never mind... It would help if I read the previous poster. Didn't realize it was already posted.
  15. Well, is the question that you don't understand what I am looking for? Or is the question that you don't understand what the cache's goal is? Now I am the one confused... The point is to take your geocaching name and try to find someone in the area where your name translates. In my case I need to find anybody along the 82nd meridian. I could have picked anywhere here in the US, but I decided to settle on the area near Columbus, OH because of the high popluation density. It does not have to be anywhere specifically... as long as it is along the 82° 26.26 longitudinal meridian. And again, this means that you would also get to log it as a find... so, it is a win-win, for you as well as me. ANY takers?
  16. check out the link I provided....
  17. Can't say that i have had this problem at all. My only gripe is that I have 2 computers but the software will only work on one at a time. IP logging keeps the software from only running on one machine. As far as your problem, did you do the 5.12 update? And if so, did you recalibrate afterwords? On my Gold it didn't need to be adjusted.
  18. Hi, I am a cacher here in So. Cal trying to do the 'Where's in a Name Cache', and I need to find a cacher that lives somewhere along the Lon of W 082° 26.26 line. It can be anywhere north or south, but I was thinking somewhere around 30 miles east of Columbus, OH along I70. The link to the cache is here. I would need that person to take a picture of their GPS showing the above lon and whatever lat they prefer. The good news is that whoever can do this with me also gets to count this as a find. Any takers?
  19. Vacman, your forum topic about the jailhouse cache can be found right here. I believe you are under the mistaken impression that old topics disappeared when Groundspeak switched to the new forum software. That is not correct. Look at the bottom of the page where there is an option to show topics from the past thirty days, since the beginning, etc. Your old topic is alive and well. I suspect you may wish to edit your cache page again to provide a link to it. Very Cool! I thought it had gone AWOL! Thanks for letting me know - I sent an e-mail TTPB and here I have my answer right here! Thanks!
  20. Yes, PLEASE be carefull of what you say! Make sure you fel you can trust the reporter to report what you want. My wife has forbidden me from ever doing interveiews again after what happened to me. This is the cache that started the story. If you haven't read the original threads - you unfortunately can't (GC took them down when they moved over here). I will be glad to resurect the story here if anyone is interested. After I had made specific requests to NOT mention my wife, kids or business in the article, the reporter mis-quoted some of things I siad, and if you read the first paragraph of the article he made it sound like I was one that was involved.
  21. You could also do what I did - have a custom coin done. I had mine made by KVCoins You can see and track my coins at Vacman's GeoCaching Page
  22. Man : "Beam me up Scotty. Scotty? Uh, hello?... Um, officer? Can you let me up out into the open? I have be in view of the sky for this thing to work." (waves arms around in the air) Officer : (thinking) Oh boy, I knew this New Years would bring out the wackos! "Sir, I have to ask you to throw the thing on the floor, step back from it, turn around and lock your hands behind your head.
  23. Well now I too am experiencing the same problem everyone else here is talking about. It will not run on my computer anymore...... I am on hold as we speak.
  24. What he said... My only complaint is that the CD is required to be present in the computer when you need to use the newer Direct Route. I like to be able to run it at home as well as at my office.
