  1. A cache has been permanently archived in one of my dogs favorite spots for a run. I would like to put a cache close to the one archived, is this allowable? We are talking about 100 yards or so.

Yes, I have done it myself.

  2. Just noticed the local event has been published - You do well to "cough" Zetetic!

If only we had known, we would not have let the Brats have the Red Item.

All jeeps seem to end up on the event circuit, being clutched by the same old faces. Put it in a real cache I say.

  3. I live in the UK and I have to admit to being a bit of an icon junkie. Not so much coins, for me the cache icons are the challenge. I had a full set until the new cache type was announced, so now I find myself booking a trip to Indianapolis so I can visit the GPS Maze at Muncie.

I'm going to be staying in Anderson from Aug 29th to Sept 2nd and would like to try and get an event set up so I can meet some local cachers, swap some bugs, stories etc. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good venue I could hold it at? Preferrably with beer/pizza available! I will have a car so would consider anywhere within about an hours drive of my hotel.

    Any ideas?

  4. There is a new one now GPS maze icon maze.gif

Sheesh! Thats the second time I've had a full set and they have come out with a new one

Oh well, I claim the record for having found the most types :(

  5. Had my N95 for a couple of months now. I still haven't found a decent "follow the arrow" type application for it, so not done much caching with it. The built in gps is ok but nowhere near as good as my bluetooth one so I still use that.

Tomtom works great on it (although it doesnt work at all with the built in gps). On the whole its a great phone, but no better for caching than any of the past 3 symbian phones I have had, all of which have worked fine using a bluetooth gps. Still, it looks good in your pants!

  6. If parking co-ords are listed then does it matter what you park there? I agree with Paul that its much easier to park a bike than a car anywhere.

I dunno about you, but for me the idea of wandering about trying to find a cache while clutching my arai and sweating to death in my leathers is far less appealing then staying on the bike and going for a blast!

  7. how can i get tom tom gps on my navman pocket p/c series 2 i have software i get part of it on but not the maps any ideas..

It should work. Once you have Tomtom installed the maps need to be placed into the root directory of your memory card in their own folder.

For example, in the root directory of my memory card I have a map folder called Western_Europe and another called Great_Britain. Within each folder is the respective map data and I can switch between the two maps from the menus in Tomtom.

  8. I think to go for a mega event from scratch is too ambitious. Most mega events tend to be established events which run annually, only qualifying for mega status after several years. There would be a lot to organise to cater for 500+ people.

Europe's first mega event is taking place in Holland next month, any takers?

Edit - according to geocacheuk.com Shrops 2006 - In Search Of The Grail has the highest number of attended logs, with 84

  9. Could the black GX on white be anti-aliased? It's a bit too pixelly.

Sorry, it was quite late when I was playing around with it, here it is not pixelated.

But without the Union Flag, Northern Ireland is no longer represented :D

    (sorry for being a pain :o )

Maybe this kind of thing is more appropriate then with the Union Jack still in the middle but with the GX logo over the top of it?

  10. I like CSC's pics and have tried (I'm no artist) incorporating a sample text with his design: -

her design. Takes more than one person to make a crew

The quality of the graphics is great and I really like the four national flags round the outside but the Union flag in the centre still excludes some nations. Could the middle be caching related.

Its hard to please everyone, hence the first design with all the flags, although I'm sure some people would object to the George Cross being in the centre.

Any suggestions for what you would like to see instead of the Union Flag?

How about the GX sign on black?

    logo5.jpg

    or on white?

  11. Here are some more logos for the pot - the idea behind them is the use of the four compass points, but replacing North, East, South and West with Northern Ireland, Eire, Scotland and Wales, with England in the middle.

The last one is an alternative which omits the flag for NI and has the Union Flag in the centre. Its got a light drop shadow which could be added to the others...

  12. Fair comment, no particular reason other than not having much success with other routes I have explored, lots of initial enthusiasm and then nothing. This organisation had put out a plea for help on our local Freecycle Cafe and have already organised a few of these type of activities, albeit on a smaller scale and seemed enthusiastic. I decided that this was possibly the easy option and is local to me. If I could easily find a more palatable non profit making project locally I would have gone for it in preference to this project, but I haven't got the time or inclination to make hard work for myself chasing organisations that don't seem too interested.

I know how you feel there, I had a few experiences like that trying to set up my CITO. I had to laugh when a council who were asking for volunteers on their website turned me down flat because I didn't live in their area, obviously out of town volunteers are no good.

I say go for it, I reckon the only essential ingredient to a CITO is a cooperative landowner, and you certainly have that. Host it and people will come.

  13. Is there any reason you favour choosing this location over one which is open to all? Couldn't you remove the whole ethical debate by finding a location which is not going to be used for a profit making venture but is also in need of a clean up?

Conservation groups etc can be very helpful in this regard, often providing equipment as well as suggesting a suitable location.

Either way I wouldn't come, but only because I won't be about on your proposed date!

  14. I love rodz's cache logs, always good for some humour and classic one liners.

The snippit which springs to mind which still makes me laugh today is "I put the coords in my GPSr OK but not my PDA. So ended up going to Dorney. Not being a crow, it was quite a way."

  15. I can understand that people don't want their stuff to be stolen, but wonder what others think of the 'photocopying' idea?

I think it sucks, I would be mighty unimpressed if I went out of my way to pick a coin up and arrived to find a crappy photocopy.

  16.

A coin I recently drilled and released visited 2 caches before it was stolen.

Sad isn't it? I released a UK geocoin over in the USA (that big geocoin black hole just beneath Canada) I had drilled 2 holes in it, attached a small keyring with mission details and it was laser etched with "Cryptik Souls Crew"

Despite my efforts, someone still stole it!

  17. I've received a few geocoins from the States today which I want to drill before I release. Some have a fully enamelled face. Is it safe to drill the enamel or will it crack?

Do you use a regualr Tungsten Carbide drill bit?

I drilled all of mine using hardened stainless steel drill bits in a pillar drill. I put some card around the coin and clamp some vice grips over it to hold it steady. As Pharisee says, watch for the snatch when you break through the other side!

I've never had any issues with any of the coatings cracking. The coins get quite hot when you drill them, and don't be surprised when you discover the metal inside is actually a totally different colour to the finish of the coin!

Any tips would be appreciated, as I'd hate to ruin any of them. :P

Drilling holes in them isn't ruining them enough?? :o
