  1. LOL This thread is hilarious! Oh the desperation! If you are hoping to find a woman by posting in here let me tell you this, its slim pickings in the geocaching world from what I've seen. Buy yourself a Superdry Brad jacket, women go mad for mine, but then I am as fit as f...
  2. I think you are correct to say I'm not really that interested in caching any more, but that is mainly because I feel the quality of the caching experience has dropped right off. When I go on holiday I still like to seek out a few as I don't think every country has suffered the same fate we have (yet) but the problem is I have too many other things going on in my life to spend hours planning a caching trip. I've never been interested in numbers. For me a normal caching expedition would be one or maybe two caches which looked worth a visit, and I simply don't have time to sit in front of the PC for hours hunting through pages and pages of power trails looking for a hidden gem. Wandering around a circular route to find 15 or so 35mm containers holds no appeal to anyone in my family. Ratings would probably change things, the death of geocachinguk.com and its ability to filter out low quality caches quickly and easily contributed greatly to my loss of interest in hunting out local caches.
  3. I think the quality has gone right down. So much so that I rarely go caching any longer. I don't have time to sift through 100 cache pages looking for something that might be worthy of my attention. Everyone seems to set power trails, sling out micros and leave it at that. I have noticed in the last few years how people now log my (old) caches with some sense of surprise and glee at having found an ammo can. When they were originally placed finding an ammo can was the norm. Not that I'm implying the container defines the cache quality, but I think its indicative of a little more effort than a(nother!) 35mm container. A good cache can be many things, a clever hide, an interesting location, a descriptive cache page etc. However, my general rule of thumb is if its in a series of more than 2 others which are located within 0.5 miles of one another its going to be pants. A rating system would be good, it seemed to work well on geocacheuk.com so I don't see why it wouldn't work if Groundspeak incorporated it. Caching has become mainstream, and its gone down the pan because of it. We all knew it was going to happen sooner or later...
  4. Precisely the reason that we archived the original Heathrow Bug Hotelin 2003. Although to be fair to the plod they were reasonably pleasant about it. Don't think the "hello hello hello" bit featured though.
  5. Sweet sweet memories, even the hospital is gone now...
  6. My micro up a tree has 51 finds and no deaths. In the logs most people seem to have enjoyed it and from memory it had a pretty high rating on GUK. Micro's don't have to be lame... I say go for it.
  7. A trackable patch? Just looks like a small part of the great big trackable geo fleece to me. Roll up roll up, who's next for a fleecing?
  8. I remember going out and doing and Dan and Pid cache about 5 days after it was published and still being FTF, the next find was 6 weeks later.
  9. Seeing as the UK is all GSM then it would rule in a whole bunch of phones, but Japan has no GSM. Any 3G phone will work ok out there though, so the N95 is still a goer, although its another nail in the coffin for the iPhone and its 1990's 2G technology
  10. I'd recommend the N95, had mine for over a year and never had to use a standalone GPS in all that time. You can install a VOIP application such as Truphone or one of the 3rd party skype clients that are out there so as long as your hotel in Japan has wifi you can make and receive cheap calls. Surfing is ok on it, download Opera Mini for free for a nice web experience on a small screen, hook it up via bluetooth to surf on something else or use JoikuSpot to create your own wireless hotspot so everyone can surf... If you go for the new 8gb model than you can cram a fair few tunes on there, or if you go for the older model you can get an 8gb card for under £30 Works with loads of GPS apps for caching, including the geocaching.com approved Trimble Geocache Navigator which downloads realtime cache info from the site and lets you note which caches you have found in order for easy logging when you get back home. 5 mega pixel camera with auto focus takes respectable photos. Dunno about the waterproof case.... Of course you could go the iPhone route, but as you already pointed out, you want a smartphone ;-)
  11. A complaint? Look how many complaints this sudden change has generated... I have no real feeling towards this issue, I'm sad we have lost good reviewers but I'm not so much into caching any more so this will not affect me too much. However, I do feel that as an adult of sound mind I'm more than capable of parsing information and making my own judgments based upon it. If someone mentions a good pub/restaurant/view along the way for me to check out while hunting a cache I feel that I am more than able to make my own decision as to whether or not I would visit the location and if I did as to what activities I would undertake whilst there. In the same way I can watch a McDonalds advert without feeling the need to run out and get a Big Mac, I can also read a cache listing without feeling coerced into visiting any establishments mentioned within. I can see the relevance of a "no commercial caches" guideline as I would be miffed if I went on a cache hunt only to discover I had to part with some of my hard earned just to obtain entry to the cache site, but I don't feel pointing out a good local pub or whatever along the way is really the same. I don't think this is really a cultural issue, I often cache when on holiday (I mean vacation :-) and I would appreciate any local knowledge offered to me from a cache setter as much then as I would when at home, be it a good place to park, a good place to drink or a good place to find some free wifi and log my caches So long as I am provided with all the information up front and left to make my own informed decision then I don't have an issue with someone mentioning somewhere along the way which may be of interest to me, more often than not I would probably appreciate it.
  12. Hope this isn't considered a commercial post... but its not going to be the same around here now that we are
  13. Well, thats almost how it works. It's very unlikely you would be charged with theft for picking up rubbish but the guy who helped me arrange my CITO event was very particular that we stayed within the boundaries of the area to be cleared as on previous clear ups they had volunteers venture onto other peoples land and for their trouble collecting litter were sued by the landowner for damages. From a legal point of view it doesn't matter that you have left something in the woods for 6 months, it's still yours, just like you would retain ownership of your car even if you parked it 50 miles from home and didn't go near it for a year. I would guess the issue which has sparked this policy change is not a complaint over someone picking up geolitter from an abandoned cache but more likely the original cache owner returning to the site from some period of absence to find one of their old caches still very much alive and well but now transferred to someone else via a forced adoption and not being very happy about it.
  14. You can write what you like in your T&Cs, but that won't make it legal. If I place my box in the woods that box belongs to me, if a website has some T&Cs which say if I don't go back to that box within x number of months then I relinquish my ownership of it then that doesn't make one iota of difference, legally that box still belongs to me and will continue to do so until I bestow ownership of it onto someone else.
  15. Well the listing is in breach of the PhonepayPlus (formerly ICSTIS) code of practice for the lack of information surrounding the SMS shortcode used. As its also generating a revenue stream for someone then IMHO its a commercial cache...
  16. How can you be sure they haven't hidden loads, then archived them and adopted them over to another account?
  17. That software has been available for less than 2 months and only works with high end phones which in the USA still cost a fair bit. No free phone with a contract like we get over here... I don't think its availability shows a trend for or against gps enabled phones causing issues. Still, no matter, I don't think all the kids are going to have gps phones anytime soon, its still going to take a few years for the feature to filter through to all handsets, and even then I doubt very much we are going to be overrun by hoodies trashing caches left, right and centre. I ditched my standalone gps in favour of using my phone for caching a couple of years ago and have never looked back. As someone else commented it would be good if the implementation of gps into handsets helped to lower the average age of cachers a bit!
  18. I tried downloading this to my N95 and I get a message telling me that my phone isn't a supported model! Odd, works fine on mine.
  19. Over At The Frankenstein Place overlooks Oakley Court Hotel, a location used in over 200 films including the setting for the school in St Trinians
  20. Working on it Put my pda on charge after I saw Jeremy's announcement. I've even downloaded the builder so might place one of my own to return the favour to rodz...
  21. No need to defend the reviewers, as you say they are just doing what they do. I just think the rule is stupid.
  22. I think its stupid that a cache which has no issues and is still being found regularly would be archived because the owner hasn't logged in for a while. If there are issues with a cache then I could understand the logic, but when everything is ticking along fine it seems pointless to me to archive it.
  23. Nice to see some other UK cachers will be coming along this year, see you all there!
  24. I went to last years GME which hit mega status no problem, so I guess they are fairly confident this years will do too...
