  1. What do you say when questioned by a non-cacher?

If the non-cacher is a police officer I tell them I'm geocaching. If it's someone who acts like they have the right to demand information from me, I usually tell them I'm minding my own business.

Hahaha right on ! I should say that next time :D

I usually tell people that I was in the area before and lost my earrings so now I am looking for them. Or I pretend to tie my shoe.

  2. I recieved and email from someone on the site asking for personal information so that they could transfer 5 million dollars to me. Obviously this is fake. The user signed up on monday and has nothing on their profile. How would I report this?

  3. I follow the geocaching vlogger on youtube. His videos can be cheesy but I like his enthusiasm. Some of his finds are really cool and I like how he puts his videos together. They might be spoilers for some, but I dont even live in the states that he caches in so it doesnt effect me. Its not like he posts the GC codes either.

  4. I'm based out of Fountain Valley. We really don't have any real organized groups of cachers anymore. Maybe the closest things to it are the OC Piranas and Team DNF. All the old timers all know each other and just call or email each other to go out caching. I recommend just showing up at an even and finding the cacher named Littledebbie if she is in attendance, she is like the local cache ambassador. You could also try for FTFs. the Piranhas are fairly competitive about them and you can usually catch a couple at a cache standing around talking for a little after they found it.

I've noticed this. All the caches I go to around Newport have the same group of people finding them or hiding them. I want to be a part of a group! I think I've even emailed a handful of people like Smoochersmom, bajatym and Fifty1fifty for help on a few caches. I usually go solo on , y adventures. It would be nice to go with others

  5. In my geocaching bag I have:

snack size ziplocks. Just in case I need them to replace cache baggies

    extra logs in different sizes

    tweazers, for stuck logs.

    a bright flashlight/magnet

a waterproof pen, to sign logs

any trackables that I have picked up

my own personal swag items to place in caches i like

my phone for gps and the geocaching ap

    headhpones to listen to music

  6. I'm in Marina Del Rey, but cache in OC pretty regularly. I'll be unavailable through most of April, but am interested in caching in or about OC after April. FWIW, I am particularly fond of bike-caching (using a bike to get from one cache to another).

I haven't done that before sounds like fun!

  7. I have seen a few Instagram accounts that are for geocaching and even some Youtube videos. Does anyone here share things publicly? What are your thoughts on this? I take pictures of every cache I find.

I write something about every cache I find-there's even a spot on the cache page for that. A lot of people think it's to put TFTC on

Hahahaha I try to be constructive and detailed in my logs. Sometimes it is hard if they are micro/nano easy grabs. I'm getting tired of those

  8. I like your pictures, and as a cache owner I appreciate that you keep pictures of the caches In your "notebook" and off the cache page. Thanks for that.

Thanks. I thought it might be a "bad" idea to post my pictures. Someone could easily cheat, but I think if someone is willing to work that hard to ruin the game for themselves then they don't understand the true reason behind geocaching. I like posting pictures, on cache pages, that don't give anything away. Mainly to show the CO I had a nice enough experience to share it with them/others

  9. Edit: I found my answer thank you!

Most logs in a cache have the geocaching logo on it along with a description of the game and to not move or throw it away. Are these logs printed out? I know you can buy some from the geocaching shop but most of the logs I have seen do not look like they are from that site. I would like to have some to carry around with me on my adventures so I can freshen up the caches that have full logs. I don't like to use blank or ripped paper

  10. Wow that is unfortunate. I've noticed that a lot of caches have things in their inventory but in reality the trackables aren't there or haven't been active in a few years. It is disappointing. I haven't placed my trackables yet and I hope this doesn't happen to mine.

  11. I posted this in the SW forum but I don't think many people are active in that forum. I thought I might get a response here.

I am going to the Big Island this year. I searched and there are caches here. I will only be there for a few days and I want to look for the best caches. Caches that are challenging or take me to beautiful spot. I don't particularly like micro or nano caches. Have you been here or to another island of Hawaii? What were your favorites?

  12. Yes, I've done this 2 years and will be doing it again this year. You are welcome to take a look at the event pages. There's alot of info that may be helpful.

In the past I've done day-time events. I've done different routes for different people. We start off with a traditional egg hunt for the under 6s. My daughter hides chocolate in the trees near the event coordinates and the little ones go hunting with their baskets. The whole thing takes about 5 minutes. Then we send people off on their GPS egg hunts. Each team gets 10 sets of coordinates. This year there will be a 2km route for everybody. There will be stashes with little plastic eggs they have to find and inside the plastic eggs there are plastic gold coins they can bring back and 'buy' chocolate at our 'store'. In previous years, I have just stuffed the plastic eggs with chocolate and candy so they get to eat while they're on the trail. The only downside with this is you have to hide them *just* before the event and pick a place where there are not too many dogs. Using plastic coins is good because I can hide them the night before and don't have to rush around the morning of the event.

I try to do a nice variety of chocolate, gummies, bigger eggs, chocolate bunnies. This year I am having fruit leathers too in case someone can't/doesn't want the chocolate. Not everyone can eat this stuff but may want to come. The 2km route was meant for families with kids. I also did a 3km route for adults and teens. They had eggs to find too, but in each egg, there was no chocolate, but rather a slip of paper with partial coordinates. After they found their 10 eggs, they had the coordinates to a big lock n lock full of goodies.

This year, I am adding a night event. This is meant for adults/teens. They will be given 10 sets of coordinates, which will bring them within 50 meters of a firetack, which will mark the location of eggs full of goodies. I will be putting glowsticks in one of the eggs in each stash to make it 'glow'. Still working on the details, but i may make some of the 10 locations interesting hides or something else to make 'em work for their chocolate.

Every year, I ask for donations. People are pretty good about bringing money. Last year I collected over $200 which pretty much covered the chocolate. The other stuff like the plastic eggs and lock n locks I reuse from year to year.

I budget about 200 grams of chocolate per person, which is a generous amount. There are always some people that come for the company and don't want to eat the chocolate. That allows for 1 big thing, like a chocolate bunny plus about 100 grams of little things plus the chocolate for the under 6s egg hunt. $200CDN covers chocolate for 60 people.

What I did to figure out the 200 grams was lay out what I thought would be reasonable for 1 person, then weigh it, then multiply by the number of people coming to figure out the total # of kilograms to buy.

Wow thanks for all the info! The night hunt seems like a ton of fun. Haha I wish I could go to your events
