  1. err...did I say anything about grizzlies in Spokane? If I did, I was LYING!!! There are no grizzlies in Spokane, there are black bear, some moose, cougers, bobcats...but... 0 nada zippo zilch none no Grizzlies. Sorry for lying to you...sheesh...like read my name pal.DRIFTER!!!!!!! quote:Originally posted by leatherman: quote:Originally posted by edgydrifter:I carry a 40 s&w, or, if I'm worried about bear, a 50 AE, but thats a monster...and still I think would just piss off a grizzly. http://www.plauder-smilies.com/lach.gif _Preperation, the first law to survival._ http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/39197_400.jpg "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."
  2. Hello all I don't carry while cacheing around town, but out in the woods I do. There are creatures out there that bite. I carry a 40 s&w, or, if I'm worried about bear, a 50 AE, but thats a monster...and still I think would just piss off a grizzly. The people from the old Empire don't understand now, any better than before, it's personal responsibility that keeps you safe...not calling on your Southern neighbor, or the the neighbor across the pond. I think their sad attitude is reflected in all of Europe, and it's inability to do anything, along the lines of defense, without aid from the US. All said in good humor, and without malice...wouldn't want to be beaten by someone with a stick! "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."

  4. I have the Topo! software...and you have to put the ! at the end, it's in the contract I generally like it, it has lots of backroads, and strange little highlights on the maps, old gravesites, abandoned mines and things of that nature. But some of the maps that they drew the data from or old, I think the oldest I have seen on the Washington state map is 1976, so some of the newest roads aren't listed...but all the rivers and lakes and oceans are! I haven't used the R&R, so I can't compare the two, but I am happy with mine Mark "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."

  6. Hello all I have the National Geographic Topo! mapping software. I also have it loaded on my Pocket PC. I just stumbled over this problem, and thought someone here might have some ideas. When I have the software loaded on my home PC and use the coordinate locater, degrees, minutes minutes, North and West, all is good. It places the cursor right over the spot. When I have the software running on my Pocket PC though, with the same coordinate display, I have to use N XX.XX.XXX and E. XX.XX.XXX to get to the right area...or at least the same area as indicated by the home PC. Does anyone have any ideas why this is so? It's more of a curiosity than a problem since I can work around it....Thanks...Mark "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."
  7. Do I smell the ST. Joe? Does the town start with an A? I bet the huckelberries are almost ripe on Moon Pass by now. I say place it, it will give me an excuse to get the fly rod out Ok...you've found the cache BEFORE I placed it...that must be some kinda record. I haven't been up to Moon Pass in years...maybe...err...nevermind. "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."

  9. Hello all I was wondering how far you go to search for caches? I have my search set for 100 miles of my zip, but if I'm planning a weekend then the skies the limit. Also, what other factors influence your decision to go after a particular cache? The beads and trinkets...the locale,history,scenery...the terrian? I go after any I think I can do, no all day hikes, no climbing gear. If there is a bit of local history to be learned thats a big plus. The reason I'm asking is because I want to place a cache in what some would consider a "remote" area. Around a small, untouristy town at the end of a 45 mile paved road. The town was a logging town, was full of houses of ill repute and the area is beutiful. Lots of NW history. The main road follows a great fishing river, and great camping spots abound. You can get to the area from different routes, from the highway or different backroad routes. I was planning on posting a map with different approaches highlighted, and miles back to towns. I also got some decent cache candy and gonna put 4 travel bugs in it, do they influence the decision process? If this has been posted to death before...Sorry! 10. My god man! Let nothing come between you and the dirt...get a duel sport and combine the two. I've been on bikes for 33 years, and since I've started cacheing, haven't lost any riding time. Edgydrifter "Quit giving the slave drivers pointers..."

  12. What else do I use mine for? Well...occasionally when I'm having trouble finding a cache, I toss my GlobalMap 100 into the air and hope it lands near the hidden cache... Seriously, I use mine all the time on my bike as a clock/speedometer and trip meter.
  13. Hello all Last year in the late spring early summer, I put a "Betty Boop" travel bug in my Mullen Road Cache in Washington state. I know it made it to Duck Country in Oregon, but havent heard anything on it since. Anyone seen it lately? Thanks...Edgy
  14. Wow, I wasn't to concerned till now, now it seems that my GPS is affecting reality and is responsible for painting my nieghbors house? Somehow I find that hard to believe, but you seem to know of what you speak so I'll take your word for it. It started out as a mild curiosity and now has blossomed into a thread on radio wave interferance patterns, quantum mechanics and the nature of reality...geocaching rules!

  16. quote:Originally posted by Kerry: 3 or 4 feet was simply coincidence Err, I'm sorry, but does coincidence cover dozens and dozens of "parkings"? not in my world...maybe yours! 18. I have the same unit, mounted on my motorcycle, and it's been thru rain storms and blaring road heat, has been in a number of "dumps"...what? Me tip over?!? Has the hell vibrated out of it, it's mounted on a one lunger KLR 650...and no problems at all. Get a garmin heh? My friends that have them call me when they need accuracy! All said with good humor and no malice...don't wanna start a flame war...Edgy
  19. Hello all I have my GPS unit mounted on my motorcycle, and always park it home in the same spot. I have the spot way pointed, so I can always find my way home Anyway, I've noticed that last year my GPS showed me within 3 or 4 feet of the way point when parked, but this year it shows me off by 20+ feet, consistantly. It doesn't seem to be off when I use it to find caches, I mean I get within the normal distances when I use it. I was wondering if anyone knew why this could be? Has the Earth shifted on it's axis? Have the satellites been sabotaged? Have I moved and don't remember? Do GPS's need "calibration"? Is my unit whacked and it's a good excuse to buy a new one? Thanks for any help...Edgy

  21. When I was a kid, we were always mucking around in the woods and getting ticks. The procedure was wipe the infected area with turpintine, spelling may be way off,...wait... and then gently pull the tick out with tweezers, forcepts, needle nose pliers...hairpin, whatever was available. This worked for pulling an intact tick out, as for lymme diease transmission, I dont know. I suspect that if you are caught up in the life cycle of tick fever, modern medicine would be your best bet.
  22. Hello all If I can clarify a bit, the cache had been well hidden from public view, but the nearby river has been rising lately due to spring run-off. A well meaning cacher placed it further away but also not as well concealed. Mr. Moun10bike, its the one near the Trail in town, and thanks for nudging me, I hadnt thought to remove it from the list. I had been going to replace the cache, but through some clerical error, the police destroyed the can and contents. I'm gonna stick to my earlier post, clear friendly containors, the lil pink bunnies my be a little much though. Happy Cacheing...
  23. Hello all Just recieved a call from the Spokane Bomb Squad, someone called on one of my caches in a ammo can. They x-rayed it, had the bomb robot open it when the x-ray showed "wires and batteries". Well to make a long story short...can anyone post my bail? Ha...just kidding, the detective was really nice about it and was just letting me know how to pick up my property. He said no laws were broken or anything like that. I'm gonna use this as a cautionary tale and only use tupperware type containors from now on...happy cacheing.
