  1. Another voice asking to have this tool reinstated/fixed.
  2. Not all mystery/puzzle caches are challenge caches. I looked for all mystery/puzzle caches published in October within 100 miles of you, and saw nothing that looked like a challenge cache. Looks like a hider's been super busy with puzzles based on classic TV shows, though! You can find out more about challenge caches here: https://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=206 Thank you Keystone.
  3. A new challenge cache was published today near me. I'm looking for information about the moratorium being lifted.....I didn't find it in this thread. Edit: Nevermind.....I guess the Reviewers are responsible for determining if a ? cache is a challenge, or something else, and then can publish based on that judgment?
  4. Hello people in Beijing! We have a couple TBs that want to go to Asia. One wants to go to India, and the other wants to see the Great Wall. We have friends flying to Beijing this Saturday, the 4th, but they are NOT geocachers. However, they are willing to hand-off these TBs to someone over there that is! Would anyone in Beijing be willing to pick up the TBs from them, say at the concierge of their hotel or something like that? Thanks!
  5. Honestly? Because I didn't want to make yet another login at another website. Plus, It seemed I'd be more likely to find people that have been through this newb stuff here, rather over there, where I get the feeling things are more technical. Sometimes, I think you get better information on this forum than on Garmin's. But you log into the garmin forums using your Garmin account, and unless you haven't registered your device(s), you have a garmin account. This is admittedly off-topic, but I get lost every time I try visiting the Garmin forums. Where exactly in the Garmin forums do they discuss handheld GPS units like Oregons? --Larry Heh, let me know if you find out.....I have 62s specific questions I'll be hunting to get answers to soon.
  6. Thank you so much for the offer splashy, but I was able to make it work after using the silly 32-bit work-around. I really appreciate it!

  8. Yes, I read EVERYTHING. What I didn't do was pretend it was 2011 and Windows 8 didn't yet exist. I made the mistake of taking the dated instructions literally, AND not recognizing the real issue was "64bit", not the OS version. Thank you for bringing me back to this.
  9. MapInstall, which is a part of BaseCamp, creates the merged file, up to 4000 .img files. It names the file gmapsupp.img. You can then rename those gmapsupp.img files to AnyName.img and have a dozen or more on the SD card. I'm stuck at the MapInstall window. All I see there is "No unlocked maps were found for this device." I haven't felt this inept in a long time, lol. I've got the "ortopo11" folder in the ....Garmin/Mapinstall/Maps folder, and also tried it in the Garmin/Basecamp/Maps directory....but neither one had Basecamp recognizing it in the "library" on the left of the Basecamp screen.
  10. Thank you geodarts and mineral2. This is the file/map I am talking about: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/424/ It has 154 .img files. I can't imagine the uploader envisioned people having to choose between 154 maps on their GPS......right? So now I am back to thinking I have to merge/consolidate/fiddle-with this file to make it work.
  11. My objective: I have a map that is a folder of .img files (that maybe I should have never downloaded in the first place) that I'd like to use on my Garmin 62s. First, I will apologize for not being able to find a similar topic to help me through this. I've spent the last hour trying to figure out how to get the "ORTOPO11" map I downloaded from gpsfiledepot.com onto my 62s. I've seen all the outdated tutorials on that website, and then was led to MapsetToolkit that doesn't seem to interact with Basecamp, only Mapsource (which I read has been replaced by Basecamp). I feel like I am missing a big piece of the puzzle here. Maybe it's not as hard as it seems and I am just expecting it to be. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
  12. Thank you for the replies everyone! Bamboozle , what do you like about the 62s over the 450?
  13. I think I shall have to say Harrumph! I'm male, older than that, and have always have vision problems. Cataract surgery ten years ago transformed me from 20/1200 to 20/20 (but with major problems). (I now focus at 24" or 4' or beyond. Those are the only two options.) Garmin nüvi is for driving. It can be used off-road, but severe battery problems. (I will admit never having tried using the nüvi for off-road.) When our eTrex Vista Hcx died, we went for the eTrex 30. Techie problems resolved by my techie brother. I think we paid about $250 for the eTrex 30. Works well for me and for my caching partner who is also extremely nearsighted. Using GSAK. we load both the nüvi and the eTrex 30 with the GPX files. So, yes, the eTrex 3 and the nüvi 455 are both 'paperless'. GSAK?
  14. Hey Everyone, What GPS unit would you recommend for a 65 year-old lady with bad eyes and a low tolerance for complicated technological devices? Oh yeah, and she has a limited budget, of course. Here are the requirements: - minimum 3" wide screen, bigger is better here - touchscreen is probably best - paperless geogaching capable A friend of hers has a Nuvi 500 from 4 years ago that seems to be capable of getting the job done, with little complication. Was that device marketed for driving or handheld? What comparable device is Garmin making now? Based on my limited understanding of the choices, it seems the larger screen and lower price is achieved in the automotive units (at least with Garmins). Is that right? And besides battery life, what are the biggest problems she may face if she goes that route, as opposed to spending $400+ on a handheld? Does Garmin make "paperless" units found in the automotive section on their website? It doesn't look that way. :/ Thanks is Advance! Modoc
