  1. Thanks for all the advice, everyone. When I get time I'll investigate further into the "cleanliness" of my work machine. I think we have Spybot. I'm also going to look into the possibility of using another browser. Thanks, and may you all be porn popup free. I'm glad it doesn't sound like Groundspeak is the problem. I should have known - what a great, high tech website!!!! Thanks!
  2. The last 3 times I've visited the site, I've been hit by VERY disturbing porn popups. In all three instances, it happened after I had hit the back button on my browser two or more times. The popups wouldn't stop, so I resorted to turning off my computer! I had the IT person at my work (where this happened) run Adaware, and my machine came up clean. We have both a network firewall and I believe my machine has a local firewall. How can this happen? Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything they can do about it? I'd hate for anyone, especially kids, to be subjected to what I saw before I hit the OFF button. Help!
  3. I read the press release, but am still a little confused about how the autorouting will work with the existing receivers (also noticed that the green wasn't mentioned...thanks again, Robert). Any ideas? Will people with platinums and golds circa 2002 have to load new firmware to utilize the autorouting software properly? P.S. - Thanks for the Fry's coords, TotemLake. I'll have to check it out. Is it like Bestbuy or Circuit City or something?
  4. Thanks, Robert. The part concerning loss of detail when zooming out beyond 1.60 miles is good to know. We don't have Fry's up here in Seattle. Despite the lack of autorouting and the small basemap, I think I would definitely be tempted to pick up a Merigreen for only $89!!! Does anyone else know of any good deals, preferably on new units, preferably from reputeable online stores?
  5. Calling all Meridian users. I am looking to upgrade to a GPSr that has mapping capability, and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have pretty much narrowed my list down to the Meridian series due to it's SD card expandibility and ruggedness. (I would like to be able to quickly and easily load large map areas of multiple states/countries (rules out the Garmin V, no SD card), and I tend to use my GPSr in harsh motorcycling type environments (ruling out the Garmin iQUE3600, too frail looking)). My questions are as follows: 1: I found a good deal on a Merigreen ($160). Once I load it up with 64mB or more of topo detail, will it matter that it only has a 2mB built in basemap? 2: Will the rumored new Magellan software that allows autorouting give the Merigreen and other Meridian series receivers that capability, or will the new software be for new, as-yet-unrevealed Magellan hardware? In other words, should I wait for new, likely much more expensive hardware to go with the new autorouting software, or will the software (and presumably firmware updates) allow the Meridians to autoroute? Thanks for any help or additional rumors anyone can pass on!

  7. Does anyone else out there use Lowrance receivers? I've noticed that people sort of treat Garmin vs. Magellan in the same way rabid Nascar fans treat Ford vs. Chevy, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone even mention poor old Lowrance. I've been using a Lowrance Globalnav 200 for something like 6 years, and have been very happy with it. Simple, rugged, and accurate enough to get me home every time. I've just started using it for caching, and it seems accurate enough for that, too. My wife's brother has a yellow etrex, which seems a little better under trees, but other than that they seem comparable. Does anyone have any Lowrance reviews or stories? Has anyone hooked theirs up to a pc to upload/download waypoints? I've been thinking of attempting that, but don't know what I need, or if it is even possible. Just interested. - Mazdamattc [This message was edited by mazdamattc on March 25, 2003 at 12:58 PM.]
  8. This might seem like a stupid question, but I am of the opinion that there is no such thing, so here goes: What is an avatar? Does it have something to do with the pictures people have next to their screenname in the discussion forums? If so, how do they get them in there? On a related note, how do you use the little smiley faces in log entries, etc.? Can anyone shed some light on this for a poor, ignorant newcomer to online Forums? Thanks!
  9. I AM THINKING OF UPGRADING FROM MY OLD LOWRANCE GLOBALNAV200 TO A UNIT WITH MAPPING, WAAS, AND A QUAD-HELIX ANTENNA WITH EXTERNAL OPTION, AND SO HAVE SORT OF NARROWED IT DOWN TO A GARMIN V OR 76S. THE GPS V HAS THE AUTOROUTING FEATURE. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT. IS IT A GIMMICK, OR TRULY USEFUL, ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE MAJOR CITIES. THE 76S HAS AN ELECTRONIC COMPASS AND SMALLER SIZE GOING FOR IT - COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS? I AM NOT COMPLETELY SET ON GARMIN PRODUCTS, EITHER... THANKS FOR ANY INPUT.
  10. There is no easy way to do a property survey using simple GPS equipment. If there was, most of us land surveyors out here would be out of business! You could hire a local land surveyor to survey the property in question, using survey-grade GPS equipment and post-processing software, and tying in to your local grid system, and then have him convert his calculated coordinates on the property corners to Lat/Longs, which you could then enter into your handheld GPS. But I don't think that is what you had in mind. Sorry!
