  1. I started by looking for benchmarks in the zip codes around me. I ended up with about 300 in a .loc file. I use Garmin's mapsource to plan a route that covers a hunt.
  2. I am using my HP iPAQ PPC running Pocket PC 2003. I have a 256MB SD card and the Garmin cfQue 1620 GPS unit. The compact flash untis from Garmin are now discontinued since they are making Bluetooth ones, so I got a good deal. I am new to geocaching, but not to GPS navigation, having used them for several years racing sailboats. My cfQue is as accurate as the GPSMAP76 and 76C and 176 that I have used before. It usually puts me within 12-15' of the waypoint. I can zoom to the 120ft level and at 10' accuracy the position indicator covers the waypoint icon. Thanks,
  3. I have a Garmin 76map, I bought my Dad a 76mapC - color and a bigger image, I also have a Garmin cf Que 1620 for my PDA, they all work good with Garmin's Mapsource on my laptop. Mapsource can handle both .loc and .gpx download formats from the geocaching and NGS benchmark sites. My suggestion is to get the best one you can afford, spend some time out in the backyard with it and learn the menus, keybresses, etc so it is easy to use in the field.
  4. West michigan has several HWY Right-of-way markers at intersections that are a cement post, triangluar cross section and usually stand 18" to 36" above grade. They are often reference points in updates to the NSRS.
