  1. No I don't think you should be able to log your own cache. At the same time I don't feel you should log your own event either for the same reason as GOF and Bacall gave for logging your own cache. If you are hosting an event it is already assumed that you are attending and you got credit for your attendance on your Geocaches Owned list
  2. Maybe ICM will surprise us and make a return visit to Oceola next year. It would be nice to see the water and mud on the Jeep trails compared to the sugar sand of Ocala. Either ONF you choose we will be sure to be there. haven't missed on since FFF3
  3. we don't use the PAF network. from the logs we have received from those that have used their PAF's while hunting caches it seem that most of the time it just results in your PAF just telling you exactly where and how the cache is cache is hidden. with the end result being that you really don't have to hunt or put any effort into finding the cache to me it is no different than using a throw down container or having a friend log a find for you.
  4. you can also send your unit back to Garmin. they have an out of warranty repair service. all you have to do is send them your unit and they will send you a newly refurbished one in exchange. for the 60csx it will cost you $110. I used this service a few months ago and the unit I received back was like new and have not had any problems with it and I think it only took 1 week from the time I sent mine in till I received my replacement. Garmin out of warranty repair
  5. or don't log it, which ever way you feel is right in your mind. either way just go ahead and get it published
  6. I have never logged an event as attended since being the event host it is already assumed that you attended. I look at it as logging a find on your own cache, but I know many others out there see it different. when it comes down to it you just need to do what you feel is right
  7. This one has bees going in Florida now for a couple of years Owasso Shalom Clothing Optional Cache
  8. I have given out 2 and have another 257 waiting on a home
  9. I guess that could be where my hang up is. So do we set this basic fundamental to the side since this is a new part of the game or do we hold on to the basics and build from there? I think challenges have potential to be something good and GS has left it up to us to mold challenges into a game we want to play. Reading the challenge FAQ's GS isn't really clear on their stand. This is form the Challenges FAQ's "Do the geocache placement guidelines against saturation and commercial caches apply? Since Challenges have no physical container, there is no guideline on the distance from each other or from geocaches. Regarding commercial content or other agendas, it is up to the community to decide whether a Challenge is appropriate or not. There is a "spam" flag option for this reason." While there is nothing wrong with the Salvation Army, I Personally don't feel agendas should be part of the game so I gave it a thumbs down. If we don't set some standards early on and use the tools GS gave us as the reviewing process by voting or flagging then things could go downhill fast and we will start seeing challenges for everything you can think of.
  10. What do you all feel about using challenges to push some type of agenda. I will give an example of a challenge that was recently published close to me. "This action challenge is one that is dear to my heart, TASK: I challenge all local cachers to go to this Salvation Army and donate 1 or more items. With the hurricanes in the waters and all the Natural disasters happening around us the ones of us that are fortunate to have what we have need to help those who don't. So I challenge you to take at least one item to this Salvation Army site. If you want to post a picture showing your Salvation donation then post it, but this is not a requirement. Happy caching and have a blessed day. Since everyone's opinions will very, some might see this as an agenda and others might not. I do believe that if this was submitted as a cache worded the way it is now it would be denied. I gave this challenge a thumbs down and left a note for the owner letting him know why. You can probably guess he wasn't to happy about it and told me that if I didn't like it I should just not do it and not vote against it but I feel it is better to let them know why you are voting against it rather them leaving them wondering as it could them help with future submissions.
  11. I agree that those giving this one a thumbs down are just doing so because they don't like the new challenges. It's put together they way challenges should be and does not deserve the thumbs down. unlike the types of challenges near me that tell you to go to a red box and take a picture holding a dollar and hugging the machine. for those of you outside the US that might not know what a Red Box is, it's a DVD rental vending machine usually found at local stores.
  12. I wouldn't to me it just doesn't seem right, but then again I'm in the small group of cachers that doesn't think it's right to log your own event as attended either. I feel that if you host the event then it is already assumed that you are attending, but that is another topic all together.
  13. get real. how would it be funny to see someone get hurt or possibly arrested doing one of those challenges. and how do those challenges fall into the family friendly aspect of caching. I just don't get why so many are set on trying to ruin this new feature without even giving them a chance. Seems like I have seen so many people on here telling others that just because they don't like a certain type of cache to just over look it and continue on with the types they do enjoy. but now some of those same people are the ones trying to ruin these new challenges for those that would like to at least give them a chance.
  14. If these are listed as traditionals and not multis or puzzles then it truly is the CO's problem as these caches should not have ever been published. if there is no log book for these caches then sounds like the best option is a needs archived log or a note to the reviewer so he can disable them until they meet the guidelines.
  15. Actually it has to do with the idea that many people don't see the harm in things if it is something they agree with but they might be more against things they do not agree with. A cross is not just a symbol for a religion the same as a swastika is not just a symbol of a political party. Neither symbol is universally accepted as a symbol of 'good'. To you a cross might bring to mind Jesus and Christianity whereas to someone else it might bring to mind fire and the KKK. Personally I might not have an issue with a cross in a cache but I might with a swastika in a cache. But since they both are legitimate symbols of both 'good' and 'evil' I don't think either should be used as swag. It is not 'fair' to allow one religious symbol but not another. But your argument applies to everything, not just religious items. You could leave a rainbow pin in a cache, and someone could start a thread about gay propaganda not being appropriate. A General Lee Matchbox car could be construed as racist. An American flag could enrage an anti-war activist. Conversely, you might leave something with non-religious intent that could be misconstrued as religious -- seashells, for instance. that's just it with the wide variety of people that cache it doesn't matter what you leave someone somewhere will find a problem with it. Right. So why single out religious items? so we wouldn't go off topic since that was the original subject of this thread

  17. seems that most will tolerate those religious tracts that are occasionally found in caches. Could it have anything to do with them mostly conforming to to their christian beliefs. I'm wondering if these tracts were pushing something like Wicca, satanism or any other pagan based religion would those that are for them still be saying if you don't like them just don't look at them or would they change their minds and decide that they don't belong in caches because they don't want their families subjected to a different belief than theirs
  18. Guess that really depends on how you look at it, but if I was out on the streets starving I would much rather be saved by a Big Mac that a religious tract. Man does not live by Big Macs alone. true that's where a side of fries, a large drink and an apple pie come into play

  20. that's something you would be better asking in southeast regional forum. it is more of a style that you will find in NEFGA land around Jacksonville Fl. but to give you an idea you could look up this cache "The Federation MUST PAY!" GCGX5D
  21. Garmin has an out of warranty repair for their GPS units, for a 60csx it costs $110. You send yours in and they send you a newly refurbished unit. I just sent mine in and received my new one within 2 weeks. Here's a link to the Garmin out of warranty info
  22. But there is a push in Florida right now to legalize open carry. HB517 and SB234 are going to the House and Senate so hopefully things will change soon in Florida. Don't think I would OC in any urban areas but it would be nice to have the option while out in the woods
  23. There is a way....make your cache a Premium Members only cache. That still won't tell you who's watching your cache, just who has looked at the cache listing
  24. I use to years ago then it got to the point where people would find the busiest intersections or place them where it was almost impossible to not be seen and tell you to use extreme stealth. After these type hide became more common I finally decided that if they wanted to place a cache in a highest muggle area they could find and I got caught looking for it then oh well, whoever hid the cache should have found a better place to begin with
  25. Why wait seems that some of your ideas might work for Earth caches. So you might as well go ahead and start listing them now [*]All local waste treatment plants [*]Local landfills [*]Some of the well-used illegal dumping sites along the river [*]A couple of the former salmon creeks that are now poisoned from industrial effluent [*]The City of Vancouver's "unofficial" raw sewage outfall into English Bay
