  1. A huge thank you to the person who put this logo in the public domain and then to the digitizer who went to the additional step of sharing his/her embroidery files. I'm so glad not to have to "reinvent the wheel" on this one. Off to design my patches.
  2. As a newbie still learning how to use my equipment and also as a mom caching with a kiddo in tow, I like them. They give me practice in doing things such as not spending 45 minutes searching for my car because I fumble fingered the button. I think they serve a purpose, and sometimes they're even in a cool location.
  3. I HATE TICKS! Went caching last Thursday and so far found two on dear daughter, two on me and two more crawling around loose in my car! YUCK! YUCK! YUCK! Hate 'em! T
  4. I try to leave useful things: Pencils w/sharpener (in case the finder forgot a writing instrument) Small Carabiners (great for attaching water bottles to back packs and other tasks) Cylume sticks (useful if it gets dark while caching but mostly because dd loves them) I like the bug wipes and mini first aid kit ideas. I'll be on the lookout for those. I'm also working on a design for an embroidered patch as a sig item that will be making its appearance sometime this spring.
  5. I was LTF on one back in January. Never take a bunch of teenagers on a mission that says "stealth required". I was planning on using them as a diversion but we got the cache muggled instead. According to the cache owner it had happened before so she archeived it instead of replacing it again but it still makes me feel bad for getting the poor cache killed.
  6. I've gotten both responses....the "You are SUCH a geek!" responses and the "Oh wow! That's so cool!" responses. I figure it this way...we are having a ball and that's what matters. Those that "get it" are welcome to come join the fun and those that don't "get it", oh well, their loss.
  7. It was hidden at the church where my husband and I got married.
  8. I sent you an e-mail. My 9yo and I would love to help!
  9. My name is Teri, I collect bears and I was born in 1968.
  10. You clamber through briars, brush and rocks and end up muddy and wet up to your knees from falling in the river all just to log a DNF...and think it was the best afternoon you've had in months!
  11. Well, I'm pretty much a newbie at this, but I'm sure its going to be awhile before I live this one down. Yesterday I was caching out of state with my dd and my dad. DD is my caching buddy and used to weird things that happen, dad has never been before. Being that I wasn't near my own computer I had to manually enter the coords from the print out to set the GPSr. Somehow I hit the enter button twice and managed not only to enter what I had intended to but also the coords of where I happened to be standing at that moment. Anyone care to guess which set of coords we spent 45 minutes using? Yep. The ones that kept taking us back to the car, over and over and over again. My dad even had me MOVE the car to see if I'd parked on top of it. LOL! The actual cache was finally found with the correct coords, completely across the river from where we were parked. DD was happy she finally got her first find...the location was beautiful and we explored it more thoroughly than we probably otherwise would have, but I'm sure I'm going to spend a long time hearing about how we spent 45 minutes trying to find my car. So maybe we need a shirt that says.... DUDE! Where's my car?
  12. I did the poll. I was happy to notice that a lot of us are in my age bracket and the one I'm about to enter.
  13. I placed my first cache "Timber Creek Cache" (Mississippi) on 3/17 and then read about this challenge after I returned from that trip. At this moment its still awaiting its FTF. I'm watching the listing with nearly as much excitement as I get when searching for a cache. So I didn't really place this for the challenge specifically but I'm glad it fit into the time frame of the challenge and I could "play" too.
  14. I'm a fairly newish cacher, got my GPS for Christmas, and I've been here pretty much ever since but I guess with only 2 posts that qualifies me as a lurker. I don't tend to "talk" as much as listen, in real life as well as online, but when I do have something to say just try to shut me up. I homeschool and I heard about letterboxing first and then geocaching through that and that a few of the homeschoolers in our area were doing this to make geography skills fun for our kids. I had NO idea how much fun it would be for ME! My family, my teenaged sunday school kids and several friends I've introduced to the sport in the last few months have a total ball looking for all kinds of caches in our area. Even the dreaded LPC's. LOL! We're in a largely urban environment so those LPC's are nice to have when the kids are along. Keeps them from getting bored. I'm beginning to post here some so I guess this is my intro and me coming out of lurkdom.
  15. I picked the first one we went after because of the personal significance of the site. It was on the grounds of the church where my husband and I got married. Once upon a time an old antibellum mansion stood there. It was various things over the years, a hospital, a sanitorium, an orphanage, the youth annex to that church until it burned to the ground one night several years ago. The cache is hidden in what used to be the front yard, now overgrown, and as well as I knew the area, it still took me two tries to find it. We hadn't thought about the whole "swag" thing, being VERY green to the sport, but we were in need of a compass (the one on my GPSr was annoying to use) and there was one in the container, so my husband scavenged his van and found a nice mini-light to trade and we took the compass which we still use on our caching adventures often as not. The first time I searched for it the family went alone. The second time, when we found it, my sunday school class went with us and you've never seen a bunch of teenagers get hooked on a sport so quickly. Nowdays we typically bring caching clothes and a list of caches to church with us at least once a month and go out after sunday school class until time for youth group. We've just returned from a mission trip in MS where in addition to doing our missions projects we 1)turned on another family that hadn't even heard of geocaching and got to witness their first find and 2)placed our first cache (which is waiting for approval as I'm typing this). I'm trying to figure out if there's a rule against having a membership as a team as well as the three of us who have individual memberships. Anyone know?
  16. I'm thinking about making up some custom patches (I'm an embroiderer) would that be something of interest or should I consider something else?
