  1. Deleted this copy too. I don't know why this was posted twice. Sorry
  2. I bought one of those cranking flashlights. It never needs batteries or bulbs. So far it has worked great! I bought it before I started geocaching, but it works for this although it is a litlte heavy. My friend has a headlamp which allows you to have both hands free. Don't forget to take along some water.
  3. My wife and I use the big treasure hunt analogy too. We also quickly add how since we started geocaching we are hiking more. We explain how we have always enjoyed visiting old cemeteries, but some how over the years never seem to find the time to do that any more. Now that we are geocaching we find ourselves in old cemeteries on a regular basis. There is a lot of history in these cemeteries I also like to mention how geocaching reminds me of the mountain climbing I did a little of when I lived in Colorado. When you conquer the summit you find the log and sign it (you can't keep it). When you are geocaching and find the cache you sign the log because you conquered the cache. It is a small victory and to find it you had a great time hiking around and spending time with someone you love! Most of our friends seem intrigued with what we are doing, but probably none of them will go out and by a GPSr and get into it until they go with us sometime. Most of them will never get involved even if they do come along with us, but that’s okay. They have different interests. We enjoy going to church twice every Sunday, but we have friends that don’t go to church at all. We all still like each other and probably enjoy one another’s company more because we have different interests. We will continue to enjoy geocaching with or without them. We will make new friends as well.
  4. I read about it on Yahoo back in 2000 or 2001. The article stated that a new game or sport had evolved using GPS. It sounded interesting, but I didn't get into it until my wife, son, and I went with some friends this past fall geocaching in Indiana. They found their 100th while we were with them. We had a great time and now we have our own GPSr and are hiking into the woods, parks, and cemeteries whenever we can. We found the few we have near where we live, so now we need to make the time to do some traveling.
  5. Thanks. This information is helpful. Should I email the owner of the cache in Illinois and inform him or her of the condition of the cache?
  6. I am somewhat puzzled about how a cache is archived. It sounds like many individuals archived their own, because they want to place a new one near by or they don't have the time to maintain it. But I have noticed that sometimes someone else archives a particular cache, because the owner is not maintaining it. Is there a hard an fast rule about how long a cache can not be maintained before it is archived? I bring this up because their was a cache in DeMotte, Indiana that was only down for less than few months and someone other than the owner archived it. Today I was going to visit a cache in Illinois but I noticed all the logs from April 14, 2006 up to January 30, 2007 are stating that they could not find it or that they think it got washed away. I wanted to try the hunt but I was pressed for time and figured the odds were against me so I skipped it. But why has this cache not been archived? Do the guidelines differ by locality?
  7. Thanks everyone for your input. I am going to buy the Garmin, because of the expandability capabilities and the color screen. My friend in Michigan called me last night and basically said the same things I am reading here, “The color screen is very helpful when reading a map,” and, “that you can add as big of a microSD card as you want.” Thanks again.
  8. I am about to purchase a new GPS. I am interested what fellow geocachers opinions are concerning these two units: Garmin eTrex Vebture Cx vs the Magellan eXplorist 210 I have read several reviews online and I can see there are advantages and disadvantages with both units. I am coming into a place in my life that I will be able to actually go caching instead of just reading about it. Up until now all I have been able to do is go caching with a friend of mine a few times. I am ready to begin to have some serious fun with this sport!
  9. Do you have any of these GPSs left? I may be interested in buying one.
