  1. One Fargo cache I have enjoyed recently is The Case Threshing Company (GC1EE9Z). The Lady Liberty cache (GC1XN4F) nearby is in an interesting location and the Red River EC (GC218F6) is also a fun place to explore. Even though Fairmount area may be 30 miles closer, it may not necessarily be faster than following the interestate to Fargo. But, perhaps it will be more of an adventure?! Have fun!
  2. Hi Chokecherry. Yep, it's a functioning "demonstration" turbine that the energy company put up. The big sign you see from the interstate has the company name. However, if you drive off the interstate out to the site, there is another sign with information about the turbine and wind energy development. Of course, it's put up by the energy company, but what else can one expect? Anyway, I hope the Wind EC is interesting enough that a person would want to do it too. I'm mean, my EC isn't going to be advertising for the energy company so what would it matter if they put a sign there? I don't intend to just have the cacher only read information off the sign if that's what you're worried about. IMHO, it's actually quite an experience stading directly under the ginormous turbine. A little freaky actually. Anyway, to each his/her own.
  3. Hey TerraViators - Here's just an idea, as your request for help. Perhaps discuss an "outwash plain" or "ground moraine" (or whatever appropriate) that the glacial feature is set in. (Don't know? Maybe your state geological survey has a guide?). Then in your lesson you could include, as part, your already-created discussion on glacial erratics. Good luck! I'm willing to help so if you have more questions, feel free to PM me. I haven't developed too many ECs (so not well versed on what's accepted and what's not), but I have a strong interest and some background in earth science.
  4. Thanks for the examples! It's good to know that two nearby ECs have been placed. Of course, I know that doesn't mean mine will necessarily be approved, but here's hoping! Yes, I realize wind is not a geologic feature per se, but I am going to give it a go. I had a similar thought of the examples mulvaney gave relating wind potential to landscape features (ah, the windy plains!). The ND Geological Survey did a short "geology note" on this which gave me some good ideas. We will see... Thanks all!
  5. Well, my intent was not to do a "power trail" of ECs. I'm not a fan of that either. My reason for making two is that they are two quite different topics. I don't think they would be combined well.
  6. I am in the beginning stages of developing two seperate but mostly unrelated earthcaches with the ideal location for both being within 200 feet of each other. Is this allowed? If you'd like to know more, see below. First, the location is a unique spot located off the interstate in North Dakota. There is an informational display there with facts about wind development in ND and also a single modern wind turbine. This spot also happens to be located on a distinctive glacial end moraine. Originally, I started out to develop an EC about the end moraine. Scoping out the site, I thought it may also be interesting to do another EC about why it's so windy in North Dakota (part of which is the lack of terrain roughness and locally the elevated position of this particular spot). The site has minimal amenities, basically just a parking lot with the signage, surrounded by farm land. I would place the wind EC by the sign and the end moraine EC at the opposite edge of the parking lot. Yes, it is possible to relocate the Wind EC to one of many wind developments in ND, but not all have informational displays or are on a well-traveled path. Of course this is also contingent on land owner permission and approval. Just wondering if it's even allowed or I shouldn't waste my time? Thank you!
  7. I guess when I was a participant in a poker game, we just took our chances that people were honest. Everyone was. We had about 20-30 people playing. Maybe one way to thwart cheating by trading cards would be that they can't open the envelope until back at the gathering spot. ?
  8. You could do a geo photo scavenger hunt of your town. You provide coordinates and folks have to take photos of what they find. A virtual cache hunt of sorts. That would also be a fun way to highlight your town for a homecoming. Also, you may get more participation from folks who aren't into traditional caches if you have a small geocaching community? Other competition ideas - Make it a game of Clue. Each cache has hints on whodunnit, with what, and where. Poker - each cache has cards in envelopes (so they can't be seen). Player with the best hand at the end wins. Best cammo'd cache container contest. (Fun for kids and adults!) Sometimes, just meet n greets are fun too! Have fun!

  10. We're trying to get a state-wide group going in ND, but it's been slow-going at the moment. Still working on the webpage. MinotRanger is actively involved (I'm sure you've seen his name on caches in that area). Nice guy. I see you've joined the NDCapitalCachers Group too. That would be my suggestion for a group for now. You may want to just do a meet-n-greet event cache in Minot to meet local cachers. They are always fun. Maybe see you on the trail sometime, honeybee77 Jamestown, ND
  11. It appears the latest version of the macro does contain Kansas. If you go to the GSAK website (gsak.net), go to Macros and scroll down to the "Challenge" macro by hynr. Of course you will have to install GSAK first (duh!).
  12. I should also mention, if you check out my profile on geocaching.com, I have a jpg image of the map that GSAK generates using that macro for the pages I've completed in North Dakota. I use ESRI's ArcGIS Explorer rather than Google Earth, but I imagine it produces the same thing.
  13. GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) has a macro that will do this for many states that have the challenge set up. It will set up a column in your database with the page number of the Delorme Atlas and also will open up a Google Earth image of the Delorme pages and the caches you've found on those pages. If you tell it to, it will also run the macro on caches you haven't found, which makes planning easier. Good luck on finishing the challenge--that's quite a feat!
  14. Too bad North Dakota is not closer to Oklahoma. We could team up as the "bee" team. Hope you found a cachin' buddy. My husband also does not care for geocaching. It's way more fun when I go with others who are "into" it, so I know where you're coming from. Good luck, honeybee77
  15. Hello again, So far I am pleased with the support that I have received for forming an GC Association here in ND. I have received a handful of responses so far and I am sure there are more folks out there who would support such an organization, but just have not voiced such support. "If we build it, they will come," right? Many folks have brought up great ideas working with agencies once an ND GC organization does get established. I'm sure this discussion will continue this weekend at the event. I will keep everyone informed on what we do talk about this weekend and what needs to be accomplished for this to move forward. Thank you to those who have contacted me with support and ideas. I think this is an exciting time for ND Geocaching! Thanks, honeybee77 (aka Melisa)
  16. I posted this on our two ND Geocaching Yahoo! Groups, but thought I would share here as well: Hello all, At the ND state-wide geocaching event this coming weekend (http://coord.info/GC1M8CM ) we will be discussing if there is interest in forming a non-profit ND Geocaching Association. Two of our neighbors offer great examples of an organized state/province-wide geocaching association: Minnesota Geocaching Association http://mngca.org/ and Manitoba Geocaching Association http://www.mbgeocaching.ca/ . In my mind, one duty of a formal GC Association will be to work with local and state agencies about geocaching policies in our state. Recently the banning of geoaching on WMA land as well as the verbal policy of no geocaching at rest areas are just a few examples of where an association may be able to work with an agency about their geocaching polcies and and also inform members of comment periods for such policies. I realize not everyone who may be interested will be able to attend the geocaching event. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in and if you would like to help get something like this established. If you are interested, please tell me your geocaching handle, real name, and city. Thanks, honeybee77 (aka Melisa)
  17. I'm glad this is starting back up again! I am hoping to actually get to Montana this summer. Looking forward to the Challenge.
  18. I would try giving the Iowa Geological Survey a call. I think they are in Iowa City, but they may be able to give you some suggestions. When I worked for the IL Geo Survey they sold topo maps. http://www.igsb.uiowa.edu/ Honeybee77
  19. You are invited to North Dakota's first ever state-wide geocaching event hosted by Dakota Cachers, MinotRanger, and yours truly, Honeybee77. This year's theme is Cachin' and Campin' -- North Dakota Style! It will be loads of fun, so grab your gear and join us at Fort Stevenson State Park (3 miles S of Garrison) on June 12-14! Everyone welcome! The event is listed on geocaching.com as GC1M8CM. A direct link here: http://tinyurl.com/ahp6wq Hope to see you there! Honeybee77 P.S. Last I checked the Google Map of the park boundary is wrong, so, trust us, it's in the park. I sent a correction to Tele Atlas (folks who created the maps), but it takes some time to change I suppose.
  20. But if we told you where they were, then it would give away the hunt, now wouldn't it?! Actually, I've never been to KC, but I'm sure it has its share of lampost caches. Look for caches that you think might be in parking lots (the google map feature might help with this)...maybe it will turn out to be a lampost. A lot of cachers find these caches dull/annoying--I think that's why previous poster said be careful what you wish for. I personally don't mind, but then again have only found one in my short geocaching career thus far. Good luck!
  21. Ah ha! That did work. I was missing the 2nd step where I verified and clicked Yes. I didn't notice that pop up at the top of the page before. It kinda just blends in. Thanks for your help!
  22. In the past, I've marked it as missing on the TB's page. This seems to only notify the TB owner that it is missing. It does not remove it from my cache inventory. The owner knows it's missing, but has not changed the status of the TB to Unknown. Or did I miss something when I marked as missing the first time? Is there something more I can do?
  23. There is a TB that is in my cache inventory, but is actually not there. I have verified this myself. It's been missing nearly a year now. The owner of the TB knows its missing. However, he/she has not marked it as missing. Is there anyway I, as cache owner, can remove it from the cache inventory? Thanks in advance, Honeybee
  24. I could probably manage hiding a Spirit Quest cache somewhere around my neck of the woods. I'm still kinda new to Jamestown, but someone told me about a good place for a cache recently and I think it might just fit the bill. I'll be in touch with the contact. I am going to try to attend the ND Capital Cachers event on June 21 and hopefully make it to the Red River Valley in August if that's still a go.
