  1. It tough to pick 1. I've done about 4 or 5 of the previously mentioned caches. All would rate in my top 10. The Aesops series are challenging caches in a very nice area. 5 or 6 caches - close together - and each uniquely challenging. Maramech is what virtual caches should try to live up to. A lot are REALLY lame but this one is special. Unusual terrain for the cornfields of Illinois. FOR SOME REASON THIS ONE IT TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE, The 'Shocking Truth about Henry' is also a great cache up in Wisconsin with at least 4 or 5 more excellent caches in the same park(fee required for entrance). None are drive up either. What a great afternoon we had. Beverly - the oldest around - with many nearby(a few of them mine). Could do a bunch from one parking area here. Putt-Putt was a fairly quick one but a lot of fun. The day we did it there was still a lot of snow and ice on the ground which added to our amusement. *********************************************************** A new favorite - not mentioned previously - is in Rockford . It is: Hell Fish Bonanza! A challenging multi with some nice 'vertical challenges' which are tough to come by in our fairly flat area. We did this last weekend. Lots of mud but a great challenge and a lot of fun. A real good workout. Other nice caches nearby too. Have fun - lots to choose from. Whats the favorite in your area? maleki
  2. I had a 'police encounter' at a cache last year and noted it in the log. The second cacher in a row to have to deal with police. The cache owner chose to delete my no find log which mentioned the police.
  3. Some libraries have software you can check out. My local library had the NG National Park software that I checked out before a trip last year.
  4. And the 'Date Found' also seems to be included in that data. Not sure if that's a recent addition or not. Once again for info only. Thanks for all your great work.
  5. No. Interesting point though. Unfortunately the GPX file from gc.com only contains an indicator to say that you have found the cache - it does not contain the DATE you found the cache. I could interrogate the logs for this, but as GPX files only contian the last 5 logs this wouldn't work unless ALL your finds were in the last 5 logs of the GPX file. There is also quite a few posts a while back discussing the various reasons how your found count can differ to that of gc.com Still sort of curious about this. I post this for info only. It is not a must have feature in any way. When I look at caches that I've found - If I was within the last 5 logs, of course my log shows up - If I logged it ANYTIME before that, I'm listed sixth. When I look at my exported GPX file I can sort of see the structure of each cache in my database(I'm surely not a programmer but I can sort of see the format). For every cache that has at least 5 logs I can see those(along with the log dates) - for caches that I have found earlier than the last 5 I am always the sixth. A couple lines above my GC id I can see the date I logged the cache. I checked a couple caches poking thru the GPX file in Notepad(how crude) and the pattern seems to hold up but not sure if it's true for all files/caches. I can find my date found in the file - even if it is beyond the last 5. If you'd like my exported GPX file to experiment on(as if you have nothing else to do). It currently has 878 found(1 went missing) and 485 not found. I can also list some cache numbers as examples within the database. Once again, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS! marty/maleki
  6. Clyde, First, thanks for all your work on this great program. I've looked for an answer to this in the help file and searched thru the 7 pages of posts here but have not seen any reference to my question. A quick question for you or anyone else in this thread that has an answer: I there any way to filter/sort my found caches based on the date I found them? I'd find this very helpful. I'm trying to resolve a problem with my 'Found' count. It was correct as of a couple weeks ago but after adding some updated found queries my count is off by one. A minor problem for sure but just wondering if it is possible to show the date I found somewhere. I'd find that quite useful at times, more useful than the Placed or Last Updated columns(at least til I need those for something anyway). Just wondering... Also, are you setup to accept donations thru PayPal for your great work. Marty maleki
  7. You bring up a very good point... let's start with the First Annual Global Cache Page Maintenance Day! Clean up all the shovels of "HTML" that have been stuck in cache pages, et al. The world will be a better place, and we'll be able to tell what caches need to be maintained, since we'll be able to load them in our apps of choice. (Oh, and rather than upload a wheelbarrow of "HTML" from Word, would you mind posting a screenshot or something? I can read HTML, and I can read perl, but that post gave the obfuscated perl contest a run for its reputation.) This would be great. Just some coords and the basic text - maybe a decoded hint. Please ditch the very unecessary bloated cutesy junk.
  8. I like it. Too many caches end up 'Temporarily Disabled' for WAY to long. Owners last comment is that it will be checked out next week - that was months ago. Get rid of some of the dead stuff.
  9. I had to manually toggle the found and archived status on a bunch of caches to make my found total agree with GC.com.
  10. Spoke too soon. I'm still locking up (running win98SE with 65MB and 233M procesor) when I have too many programs running or slowing down to a crawl with intermittent operation depending on the program and what I want to do. Alan 65mb and many open programs, no matter what they are at this point, sounds like a near fatal combination. Sounds like you really need some more memory more than anything. I loaded the most recent beta and it seems to have resolved the occasional startup problems I'd experienced running Win ME. I have 512mb on this system though so memory was not an issue.
  11. Looks like updating/adding caches is rapidly moving to top priority in my "to do list" A bit convoluted, but you can do this now if you really want. 1. Generate a filter of all the caches you want to change (perhaps by using the "user flag" for selecting required caches) 2. Export this filter to a GPX file 3. Open this GPX file in any ASCII text editor 4. Find the state data field and change to what ever you want, then save the file. 5. Load this GPX file back into GSAK You could also change other cache information this way. There is also another easier way to change just the state, but this method can only do global changes to the state. IE if you want to convert ALL caches that have a state = Nil, you could add an entry to the state abbreviation file (Tools=>State Abbreviations...) Add in your required conversion, e.g. Nil=Texas, then click on the "Full state to abbreviation" button. That took care of it. Had to manually edit as of the 50-60 I needed to edit most were in Illinois but several were in Idaho. It went rather quick cutting/pasting.
  12. Thanks again for the updates for win98 & ME. Startup seems to be much better now. I've tried to 'break' it the last couple days and it seems quite solid. A question about the 'State' field though. A number if mine indicate Nil or None in the State field. All of the 'none' are locationless caches. Most of the 'Nils' are caches I've found that are now archived but there are a few locationless caches here too. Is there any way to edit the State field. I'd like to tag the archived ones with the actual states they were in and the locationless with the state I logged it in. Not a big deal at all - just wondering. Thanks Marty
  13. Less than an hour for the cache I placed a couple days ago. Thanks ILadmin!
  14. 834 found / 88 archived A bit over 10% . Would never have figured this out without the GSAK program I've been experimenting with, it's really great.
  15. That had something to do with it. Did queries for found caches show archived caches at one time. It appears I have some found cache queries from early December that must have included the archived caches. It appears the most recent(today) queries do not include the archived. I believe I have accounting for all 834 cache logs now. I appended new queries to the older ones an everything seems to be there. I'd better back this up before I lose it. Backup - What's Backup!
  16. I have over 2000 finds in Calif alone, with no reasonable way to filter them down to groups of 500. I like the sound of Jeremy's solution. --Marky I'd like to be able to occasionally do a query for all found caches everywhere and also for all Not Found in a particular state. Last summer when I was looking for some way to gather all caches for particular states I was travelling thru, someone(BruceS I believe) suggested using the 'Placed During' search filter along with the 'State' Filter. I recently used the same method to pull my found caches(currently about 830). I did three queries, selected all states(and other provinces, etc) and split the querys by date placed. First query is for all placed between 1/1/98 and 12/31/02 Second query is for all placed between 1/1/03 and 8/30/03 Third query is for all placed between 9/1/03 and 12/31/04 Putting the three together I got just a about all of my caches. I just noticed there are about 20 missing. I'll have to see which disappeared and why. I suspect it may have something to do with locationless caches that originated outside the US or something like that. This method worked fairly painlessly for my found caches and also very well for gathering all caches in a particular state.
  17. Skiied in to place a cache a couple days ago in the Chicago area. Jac5 - Ski-In It was found already yesterday, but not by a skier. Wish I was up in he area to do your cache. We haven't had enough snow the past few winters to x-country much if at all.
  18. I've done - Under Where - mentioned above. A great cache. Here's another. A Sailors Grave at Tony's Grove Haven't logged this one yet. Was very close by last summer and it was on the list but we passed thru the area near sunset. It's even in the Cache National Forest I think...
  19. I'd move it. I hate looking for caches near houses anyway but it seems like nothing good to come of this location at this point anyway. Sounds like the cops or the local park district will be called soon too. True, you've done nothing wrong, and the cachers that might be confronted by police will be doing nothing wrong, but why hassle the locals. It might end up with your local park system banning caches. As always, just my opinion.
  20. Taken yesterday heading out to place a new cache. Me with the huge cache container strapped to my back and C with a backpack of goodies to fill it up.
  21. I'd welcome the ability to filter or block. For some it would not interupt the flow of the thread at all. There's already a thread for 'Abject Silliness', it appears to be the busiest thread here, so why does EVERY thread seem to degenerate into that, sooner than later. As always, just my opinion.
  22. Certainly one of our favorites and the quickest to find this AM. We Be Jeep'n A great cache near Moab Utah. I believe the mountain in the far distance is Mt. Peale. There is a cache there near the summit(GC18B7) that we hope to do next time in the area as well as many caches in between. Interestinlgy, from a geocaching point of view, another mt. near Mt. Peale is Mt. Waas. Seems like that one begs for a cache if there's not already one there.
