  1. NCTrekess and I had a great time looking for a few of the Rocky Mt caches as well. We didn't get started until almost 4:30 but still managed to find a nice variety of traditionals and micros. Of course no trip would have been complete without one DNF. Thanks for the great hides that have been put out in the area.

  2. I have one cache hidden is a very spooky place and its at various times been guarded by real spiders, snakes, and rats, but this log really has me baffled. I have to assume someone left this guardian, but nothing in the logbbook or online hints at who might have done it.

Yes, this is very cool! For some reason, I didn't plan ahead and bring proper search equipment on the walk. Left it in the car. The only thing I had was a tiny micro light with a red bulb. Those of you that have found this can imagine how much help that was! Anyway, had almost given up when I discovered there was an area I hadn't examined. Proceeded very slowly and timidly (remember, I didn't have "proper" equipment). The box is in great condition, but I found a most interesting "travel bug" inside the box: a live bat! I can't believe that it would have been able to squeeze itself into the box. Did somebody put it there? Did it fall into the box when somebody wasn't looking? He appeared to be "plump" enough that he hadn't been trapped there. Or if he was trapped, it hadn't been very long. Anyway, he wasn't moving around much. Almost like he was hibernating. I tossed him out to an area away from the cache. I don't think he'll return. Again, I can't believe it would be possible for him to squeeze himself into the box. I took nothing from the cache (except the bat), and left a furry "Thing" doll. TFTC.

  3. I'm already a PM and enjoy the features that are available. There are a few features that would make it more valuable to me and I think would encourage others to join.

    1. Maps with toggle ability. I'd love to have the ability from a map page to toggle caches I've found on and off. Would also like have checkbox availibility to only see certain cache types on a map.

    2. Stats. I admit I like comparing stats. It would be great to see them on both macro and micro levels much like the way caches are listed; overall, by country, by state, by city. (I would even be okay if they were only updated weekly or bi-weekly)

    3. Directional PQ's, or PQ's between locations.

    4. Watched item notifications available in a single daily email with subsections for caches and TB's.

I realize some of these can be done with 3rd party packages and others may not be feasible to implement, but it is a wishlist.

  4. When I began hiding caches it was to bring people to an area rich in history that didn't get very many visitors. I wanted to bring people to a town that had a hidden history that was fast disappearing and in danger of being forgotten.

Later after finding more caches, I began to to place caches that would both provide interesting sites and challenge finders to think outside the box. I do try to toss in a mix of both challenging hides and hides that are family friendly.

One interesting aspect of living in an area with several prolific cachers and finders is that the bar is constantly being raised. One person's idea breeds an offshoot from another and another which keeps the ideas and caches fresh. I find the evolving challenges of both finding and places caches in this environment very exciting.

I think after awhile it becomes second nature when visiting any area to think in terms of "would this be an interesting spot to support a cache".

In answer to would I buy a prepackaged cache, I probably wouldn't since i enjoy toying with different methods of cammo on my caches. But there is always exceptions and I did win a prestocked cache at an event in Newport News that I placed in keeping with its theme.

Plus as others have said... I love reading the logs.

  5. Had an interesting encounter on Music City Audition #9 Civic Center View. Here is my log entry concerning the incident.

Decided after a successful Fletch find to head over to this one since the storm had moved past. Spent about 45 minutes searching when Raleigh's finest showed up. Next 10 minutes were spent explaining geocaching while his car sat in the middle of McDowell street. He was very nice but very suspicious. I showed my GPS, my logsheet, my drivers license, my blood donor card. He finally just shrugged and said okay but did warn this area was being watched. By this time I could attest to that. There were folks standing on the sidewalk watching, standing on the parking deck watching, siting at stoplights watching. I decided retreat was the best course of action at this point. I'm going to let this one cool down awhile before I revisit.

I made it back a couple of weeks later and found the cache. Wimseyguy has several hides in downtown Raleigh that keep you looking over your shoulder for both muggles and officers.

  6. This is certainly one of the more unusual logs I've had. Noticed it on Forbidden Tower this morning.

  7. It always tough when a hobby turns into a job. You've brought a lot of joy into caching with the staffs. They are truly works of art. I always look forward to attending events where you and the Princess of Darkness show up. There invariably is a line of folks wanting to oogle and test your hiking sticks. Of course my wife is now going to ride me hard for procrastinating on her Christmas hiking staff. :lostsignal:

  8. Sorry for the late response but just spotted the topic. Some of my favorites in the immediate Raleigh area are:

    Traditionals

Serpentine Cliffs - fairly long hike

Falls Dam Redux - beautiful lake view

Pinnacle Gardens. - interesting historical site

    Micros

    Tunnel Vision - devious

    See da cedar - devious

Have fun enjoy the adventure - devious

Pine cones and Holly Berries. -devious

    Black Thing #1 - devious

hmmmmm I seem redundant on these descriptions.

    Multi

White Oak Multi - great hike along a greenway

Milo's Garden - really unique concept

Old Forest of Tom Bombadil - long hike through some beautiful areas

Caches that force you to adjust your thinking

Alexander's Ragtime Cache - this one gets alot of DNF's

Method to my madness - unusual.

  9. I've noticed more 35mm micro containers being put in places my hands will not fit. So far I've used the scrape the hands raw method, the drag it out with a stick method, and the give up and go home method. I've found my leatherman doesn't open wide enough to grip a 35mm and it often won't fit in very small open spaces either. I was curious how others are handling these type caches. Is there a special tool you carry for just such situations?

  10. The event is being held just a few miles south of Raleigh and Cary. Both cities have plenty of hotels. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina so there are museums, resturants, nightclubs, etc. in the area as well. There are also alot of caches.
