  1. are we looking at the same thing? cuz there are 5 different coins in that auction... seems like $20 was a more than fair opening bid.
  2. This travel bug of mine was once held for a year, and is now in a seldomly visited cache in Canada were it will probably stay for the next year or so. My other bugs do have a chance of moving before 2006. On the off topic of this topic Geocoins do need there own forum.
  3. The problem with eBay is that the price is more of a Max Value. That is what one person would pay. The true value is someplace between the high bid and the low bid. I did a break down of bids on the Georgia coin and the mean average of bids was $15. Only 9 people actually made the 14 bids... so half were above that and half below... throw out the top 2 high and low bids and you had a median of $17.50 or so... so I'd put the value of a Georgia coin in the $15 to $18 range according to that data. After a couple more Georgia coins are sold that value could rise or fall as more bids are incorperated. Maybe I should start tracking this... then I could come up with a price guide Sometimes I really wish I had majored in statistics...
  4. I got my SilverMarc coin yesterday and it is definatley a nice looking coin. Great detail. I don't mind selling coins... not when I bought them legit, but there are a lot of people in these forums who frown on the practice just for those who might take and sell active travelers. I actually didn't mind that one of my coins was sold on eBay... besides the fact that it wasn't one of my original 100... the idea that there are potentially "others" out there is that part that bugged me. Oh and I am disapointed that more common Washington and Georgia coins have sold for more! I haven't had any inquiries about my collection for $2500... at eBay prices that is quite a bargain.
  5. Since I haven't been able to trade for one yet, I am watching this! I am wondering what that will bring also. If the Georgia sold for around 45.00, then OH what that could bring! I just can't imagine a geocoin selling for that price... I've probably jinxed the whole auction talking about it. I remember when I bought my first geocoin... I got in on the second order of Oregon coins. After that I ordered a USA, greenman, Joy of Caching, Texas and Canada. That gave me a pretty complete set of non personal coins at the time. I was the 10th geocacher to make a personal coin... I made them in large part so I could trade for the other 9 (10 actually because Moun10Bike had 2... of those 10 I still don't have 4 of them) Who would have known it would become something so big
  6. Well I have added to the controversy. I just had to see what this would bring.
  7. I'd trade one of my metal coins for a metal coin I'd trade one of my wooden nickels and plstic tokens for a poker chip So whatever you decide I am into trading
  8. most of the time you have to be 21 because they are bars... and bars already have a category... I see no reason not to add this category. As a family website we should keep the content PG, but the names and addresses of these types of clubs can already be found in the phone book.... in other words I think the topic while being adult in nature is actually pretty tame. Thats just my two cents... I know many will disagree with me... probably including TPTB.
  9. YES... I see no reason why not... simply a collection of waypoints. No need to go inside.
  10. I think a lot of people were fooling themselves if they didn't think people would try to make a profit from geoccoins... and it starts with this website... its the american way (and for those of you not in the US its probably your way too... admit it) As for a Georgia coin we know that 500 exist... at one point I owned 3 or 4 of them. Of those 500 I'd say most of those who bought them had more than 1 and most were bought by georgia geocachers. The next question is how many serious geocoin collectors are there? Over 500? that would instantly create a supply and demand problem. 500 serious collectors is only a 10 per state average, but I think that number is pretty high. So in this case it might seem like a Georgia isn't rare, but if you don't have one, or something to trade for one then eBay is your only choice.
  11. hmmmm $47 for a Georgia. I dunno maybe my collection is for sale... anyone want to offer $2500? Thats quite a bargain.
  12. I almost forgot the GD Mystery Coin. Does anyone know anything about this coin?
  13. I'd say an original run Moun10Bike Coin. There are 200 original series Moun10Bike coins, but only 100 Team FISUR coins... but Moun10Bike probably wins because its so well known. IndyDiver is another rare one... not sure how many he had made. Waypoint15 and DHobby (original with fancy cut edge) are also rare. I do have an Original Moun10Bike (thanks to a trade before geocoins really took off... who would have known?) and a local cacher gave me a DHobby original that he had found in a cache a couple years back. Of the remaining the Team FISUR is the coin I'd most like to have. I do wonder what an Original Moun10Bike coin would sell for on eBay... it would surely go for more than a Washington I'd hope... maybe reach $100? or more... Its only true that my collection is pretty untouchable... for cash.
  14. I'm totally outraged I can't believe a common Washington coin sold for more than mine And is it just me or does that coin look scuffed around the hiker? My coin sold for $31.00 It's a shame I didn't see a penny of it. I've also seen an Oregon geocoin sell for $30. I'd be very curious what my collection would sell for. I have at least 60 metal coins... and at $30 each thats $1800... hmmmm
  15. This link will take you to the tracking website. Some cachers expect them to move like TBs and some don't. When I leave a geocoin I always write in the logbook that it is for trade. I'd look at any entries the coin has on the site and hopefully you can determine if it was meant to travel or not.
  16. WiFi hotspot caches have become pretty popular around here... logging on location is fun. As far as actual wardriving I never have... I have walked around looking for open networks, but haven't mapped them. I've found Real Estate offices are some of the best places to try. As far as legality goes it would sure be hard to police every wireless router that was left open by un-informed owners... the real crime is those who would hack locked networks.
  17. I place my personal coins in some of the caches I visit and I have left a few of the GA coins in caches as well. So yeah, some of us do I leave my personal coins in nicer caches, or when I want to get local cachers moving In fact there are two of them available now at Ka-Ho-Nee Wannabe and Ka-Ho-Nee Falls
  18. I went ahead and joined for 6 months... I like coins... I have US coins, foreign coins, Ancient coins, trade tokens, transportation tokens, and Geocoins... more or less it is rare for me to see a coin I don't like. And as far as coins in my collections go... $12 isn't bad.
  19. I've gone with just coordinates a lot... and I've been burned a few times. Every traditional should be at the listed coordinates... and if they aren't they are mislabled and I'll let a approver know. I think going without hints and a description adds a little extra difficulty especially to the urban landscape. Some people frown on this practice because often the cache page is full of information that you may need to know or would explain the location... but in the end its all in how you like to play the game.
  20. I recently bought a pair of Danners. I like them a lot. I looked at a lot of different boots but these really couldn't be beat in my opinion.
  21. I was even in Corvallis on that day but didn't really have the energy to stop by after my geocaching adventures on Saturday. You know I lived in Corvallis a couple of years and make it up there every so often, but I've never have been to da Vinci Days. Maybe next year.
  22. got mine today... these are great! I especially like my silver one. I'm afraid I didn't get #218
