  1. "a neat and tidy blog" hmmmm... this is the best review I have ever gotten I use to update more back in '05 when this thread started... but after 3 years I'm proud of myself for keeping it updated at all.
  2. Oregon has 8982 caches on 450 pages... page 450 only has 2 caches and I have found neither. I've found 3 on page 449 (I adopted one of those) and 5 on page 448. If my first hide was active it would be on page 407. My oldest active cache is on page 396.
  3. I love the idea of a geocaching magazine. I'll be one of the first people to admit that I "wanted" to write for today's cacher but never actually submitted a thing... I'm lazy and I'll admit it. I also have a full time job, and while I am wasting company time to write this an article is a different story. Most anyone who reads my blog knows I'm not a good writer anyway. Geocachers already have access to a lot of content... forums like this one and the many local sites that exist... blogs... podcachers... even youtube videos. When I read about geocaching I don't want to read politics or how micros are evil or who has the most finds... I want to read about geocaching. I think a magazine or newsletter should focus on specific experiences and caches... maybe mix in articles about interesting containers, geocoins, travel bugs, swag... but keep the geocaches as the main content. To keep the content high without offering any insentive you'll have to do some homework and solicit articles. Research those great caches and then ask whoever wrote the best log to write an article. Keep up with the forums and when you see something interesting remark "if you could expand on that it would make a great article"
  4. If you do register at sogeo.org make sure to put your city or at least some way for me to tell you are a geocacher. I get so many spam accounts I tend to get a bit happy with the delete button. I have found hundreds of caches in the area with my Legend. Its not the best under tree cover or in steep canyons, but it will work just fine. I did recently upgrade to a 60CSx but haven't given it much of a test yet.
  5. lets see... these are ones I know are in rest areas south bound from Salem to Roseburg I-5 Duck-in Cache South I'll Pass (ok this is a park not a rest area, but when in Curtin you might as well stop) Road Trip North from Roseburg to Salem I-5 Duck-In Cache North One Degree: N I-5 Rest There are more rest areas so I imagine there are more caches... these few I'm just sure about
  6. I'm a big fan of rubbing alcohol. It will remove oil from the skin... you should shower after applying. Plus if you have scratches on your legs and arms it provides a cool burning sensation. The next advice I'll give will probably turn some people off from caching with me. You should avoid showering before you go out in the woods. The grimier you are the better. Natural oils in your skin will help protect you from "light" exposure.
  7. Yes, quite a bit more. It is much easier to work with however. Of course hopefully anything you make from it should have a slightly higher value to someone then the melt value of the silver.
  8. A kealia shot glass is still one of my favorite trade items. I have it sitting out on display... which is better then most other sig items I have sitting in a box. Though I was using a blue marker a few days back and notice it was an AtlantaGal sig item. As far as a return to old school I would have had a new geocoin made already but I'm trying to buy a house. Also I had been so busy with work that a lot of the last people I ever traded with would probably never trade with me again because it took me so long. I want people to get out and search for my new cache and the caches that inspired it so badly that I almost offered my original Moun10Bike coin. But like a good collector I can't give it up just yet. Though I will admit that while I'm looking into buying a house I often look at eBay and wonder just how much I could get. If you hear of me offering to trade geocoins for appliances latter don't be overly surprized.
  9. Well I am a former geocoin addict, but I'm proud to say that I haven't purchased a coin in months. However while I've given up the hard core collecting it never gets out of your blood. I've toyed with the idea of making my own geocoins again, but I wanted something unique and I think I've found it. So to test my skills I made a special FTF geocoin for the cache blazerfan & SallyC's Revenge I made it from a product called Art Clay Silver. I would link to a site but I think that might be against forum rules. A web search will bring up plenty of places to learn about it and buy it. I don't know if anyone here has tried making coins from this as I haven't been following the forum much. But when fired the clay burns off leaving 99.9% pure silver. I "minted" the coin using rubber stamps, but ended up having to carve the lettering in as my stamp didn't leave a good impression (will have to experiment more). After firing I ended up with a nice chunk of shiney silver. Then I used Liver of Sulfur to turn it black. Then I polished it to the desired level of antique look. I think the end result is much like an ancient coin. Per coin the price is more then a regular geocoin, but it is a great treasure for special caches.

Even if he had a GPS I'm not sure it would have done him any good. That area is not a good one for keeping a GPS signal especially in bad weather. If he had a good routing GPS in his car and he had signal he might have stayed on the right road but would have still ended up stuck in the snow if he didn't turn around. Of course on the correct road they would have been spotted faster.

Good luck finding whoever cut that lock. The county is so poor they are about to close the public library and the DA is talking about cutting staff down to 2 (yup 2 whole people to prosecute every crime in the county). The county jail is hardly kept at half of capacity and some of those are inmates from our neighboring county and the State that they pay us to keep. If not for the helicopters chartered by the family and one borrowed from Jackson County they may still be lost up there. I've been over Bear Camp many times. It is a narrow forrest service road that washes out every other year and is kind of paved. Driving at night in bad weather he should have turned around as soon as he turned off onto it. Honestly, at night in slushy rain and you find your shortcut to the coast is a one lane road would you have continued?
  12. There are a few caches in and around Stewart Park like Tool Time and Chin Up. If you feel like walking you can go all around there and get a few finds and enjoy the park.
  13. Congrats... of course I already knew how much more you were getting out caching with how many of my caches you found before you moved. Its a shame you live in Maine now as Iseek has promised 15 new caches before his event
  14. 53 from 10am to 7pm with a break for lunch in Klamath Falls, OR. Of course I had the famous Rooster- as a tour guide. I've done 30 or more on many different occasions.
  15. I have tickets to see the Temptations and the Four Tops on Sunday otherwise I might have considered it. Last year I was even in Corvallis the day it happend but I was too tired to stop by. Maybe I'll make it next year
  16. This is the announcement of the first "Stash". So as far as a "cache page" goes... this is it. The location was on a small winding road with a nice pull out and some ferns... if you can find that kind of spot it would be ideal. He burried his to the rim... might not be a good idea to stick that close to the original.
  17. Before all of the negative comments start up I might mention selling Moun10Bike coins is frowned upon as he asked that none be sold. You might offer to trade it for a new GPS
  18. just do it... then hide a slightly harder cache to make up for it. I try to keep a 2/1 good to lame ratio. My lame caches get found all the time... my best cache hasn't been visited since 2004.
  19. I have a Cabelas Extreme 6 Watt LED Flashlight it is big and heavy like my maglight, but brighter.
  20. US Flag probably tops all caches with # of cachers to find and # of gallery pics. It was probably the easiest locationless cache to get (in the US at least.) The Yellow Jeep locationless had more logs when it was archived.
  21. Actually it has been late the last several months... so this is nothing new.
  22. I'd be interested if you see something in my list you want.
  23. I have my avitar on 3 coins... one brass and couple .999 silver ounces. Wonder if I could pass those off as geocoins JackSprat'sMom&Dad's avitar is neat
