From the usageocoins.com home page: _Track your coins at Groundspeak.com,. just like Travel Bugs. _ What would be the point of tracking them if people kept them? I agree with nincehelser's point that these coins are travel bugs and should be treated that way unless the coin owner states otherwise. I think I know why there are some people out there that think the coins can be kept. The Canadian Geocoins, which were the first geocoins to be sold (I know cachers had personal geocoins before the Canadian geocoins came out, but I think the Canadian geocoins were the first to be sold), are generally considered to be fair game for either keeping or moving on. Here is a quote from the Canadian Geocoin website: "These are beautifully crafted and professionally minted pieces. Whether kept as a memento of a memorable cache hunt or left as an irresistible cache trade item for a fellow cacher, a CA geocoin is the perfect treasure." RM
  2. I bought a bunch of these and they are pretty nice. So far, I have not had the courage to leave one in a cache by itself, but I have drilled holes in a couple and used them like travel bug tags (I am sure Rothstafari is thrilled with me drilling holes in the coins, but they are mine and I can do what I want no matter how stupid it seems). I figure that having them look more like regular travel bugs will help keep them from being stolen. Here is an example of one of my coins. I will eventually place some by themselves, but I will make sure to include good info sheets. RM
  3. First, congrats on reaching 500 finds. As others have suggested in past forum posts, just write your log in a text editor or word processor and then cut and past it into the log entry box when you are happy with it. That way you can spell check it and you don't have to worry about it not uploading properly on the first try. RM
  4. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:...bought something (funny-looking jar of pickles, cookies in a tin, etc.) primarily because of its potential as a cache container? I haven't ever done this, but I sure find a lot of these types of wimpy containers used by other geocachers. I use only ammo boxes. They are cheap, stout, well sealed and they are the only way to go as far as I am concerned. There is no reason to use anything else unless you are hiding a micro. RM
  5. Believe me, I know the feeling. I went geocaching last July and my truck was broken into. I had just gotten my new GPSr and I was anxious to try it out, so I went caching near my work after I had gotten off on a Saturday. The bad news was that I had all of my company stuff in the car since I was on my way home from work. I lost a Laptop, Palm Pilot, Calculator, two cell phones and all of the other stuff I had in my laptop bag. I know I was stupid to leave all that stuff in the car, but what can I say. I had already had a bad cache experience that day so I guess you could say that it was really not my day. If you want to read the whole story, look at my July 20th, 2002 log here. The good news was that my company got me a new better laptop and Palm to replace the stolen ones. Needless to say, I don't leave them in the truck when I go geocaching. RM
  6. Yes, it is definitely a Gopher Snake. They are one of the most common snakes in the San Diego area. I have caught (so the kids and wife could take a close look at them) and released many of them. They are not poisonous, but they will try to bite you, so you have to be quick to grab them. RM
  7. This cache container is big enough to handle a few mugs.
  8. I would not plan a vacation around a cache, but if I am headed to a vacation spot, I certainly check to see what caches are in the area. I have found some interesting "secret spots" by doing this. One example is the Masonic Overlook cache that we visited when we were camping in the Sierras last summer. RM
  9. Your virtual travel bug idea is fine, but there is no way that you can compare the miles on your virtual travel bug with travel bugs that actually physically travel the miles.
  10. If you are talking about the Lowly Worm, it looks like it has never been logged into a cache since its original placement in the "Cedarbend by SavagePenguin & his father" cache. Unfortunately, people often physically place a T-bug in a cache, but never bother to “drop it off” when they log the cache. The next person just grabs the bug, and since it was never officially placed in the cache, no miles get added. This has happened way too many times to my T-Bugs. If it happens when the T-Bug makes a big move, sometimes I will grab the T-Bug, place it in the cache myself and then ask the person who picked it up to go back on the website and retrieve it. RM
  11. quote:Originally posted by tenner:I bought five of this things, there cool. Heres you link http.//www.usagecoins.com/index.htp I ordered some of the coins way back in January (Just after they posted the sample coin on the website) and I still haven't seen them yet even though they said they had them ready to ship in mid February. RM
  12. Build Space Launch Vehicles (aka Rockets).
  13. You can post a note on the Breakfast Cache page so that others who attended will see the note. You can also e-mail those who entered logs on the cache page to ask if they have seen your case. RM
  14. quote:Originally posted by KITandSHAE:Including a laminated note that says "Do not remove" and lists one or more cool places to visit while you're in the area. For example, maybe a museum or a conservatory (especially when we know about little-known, neat things off the beaten path). I would much rather see this kind of information in a cache instead of all of those business cards that some cachers leave behind. I would really give a realtor my business just because he/she left a business card in a cache. That’s funny! RM

  16. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy (Admin):We will be adding this feature to the updated site currently in development. Great minds think alike Jeremy This will be a nice feature Jeremy. Will we be able to see how many people are watching us like we can see how many people are wathcing our caches? RM
  17. This is an age old question. You can't see who is watching your cache. Just post a note to your cache page asking who is watching. Everyone who is watching will get an e-mail with your note. RM
  18. I am using MapSource 4.09 and I get a standard square symbol rather than the boat anchor. I feel left out. Maybe I need to download the MapSource update so I can have boat anchors also. RM
  19. What is the best way to transfer waypoints from GPX files into MapSource? With LOC files, I was able to use GeoBuddy to convert to a format that I could import into MapSource, but GeoBuddy won't open GPX files. Thanks - Rocket Man

  21. But, what you can do is either just include the name like IV suggests, or better yet, why not include a simple link to the travel bug page. I like to include links to all the travel bugs that visit my caches. Here is an example: Rocket Man's 9/11 Cache. Rocket Man
  22. I came back from one of my caching trips this summer and found two of the things embedded in me. One was under my sock and the other was at my waist. They were the large type as you describe. I pulled both of them out without any trouble. Are you sure the head is still in there? The heads on the ones that I pulled out were extremely small (I could see them pulling out of my skin). Check the specimen that you have to make sure it doesn't still have the head on it. If you are still concerned, just go to the doctor to be sure. It is a small cost to pay for the health of your child! RM
