  1. I have never heard of a penatery, so I googled it. It asked if I meant "penitentiary"??
  2. At 9:53 CDT waypoint GCZ244 was issued... we're getting there fast.
  3. I live in Western OK and am very interested in getting into surveying. I used to help my grandpa every summer when I was a kid, but he did it old school...chains and transits and lots of math... There was no GPS back then. The point is I have a working knowledge about what surveying is about. Anyway, can anyone give any advice or share some contacts? Oh, and in case this is too off topic, I started reporting BMs to NGS yesterday. I wanted to get a feel for how it is done before I actually submitted the finds I had on GC.com.
  4. I've been reading this with some interest over the last few days. When I started Geocaching, I lurked a lot in the forums, since I am the type of person who seeks to learn as much as possible about a subject before I get too involved. I did the same thing before buying my fifth wheel camper-I read every thread I could that seemed remotely relevant on RV.net.... OT: which is, btw, how I found out about geocaching. Anyway, the point is that I decided to place a self-imposed waiting period before hiding a cache. I wanted my caches to be good ones, as judged by the standards I saw people applying here in the forums, as well as by good examples of what I saw in the field. The quality of my hides would have suffered had I rushed right out to place a cache, like I initially wanted to do, when I started caching. Personally, I agree that there should be a period of time of finding before one is allowed to register a hide. That's my opinion.
  5. Certainly not to argue with you, but I don't understand. What possible maintainence could a virtual need? Things change. Lets say you used the 4th word on the 2nd line as your verification question. Now the park updates the signs. The word is now different. You need to work it out. Or they remove the statue your clue was based on, and so on. Ok, so people start sending you a different word than you expect. Doesn't take much to figure out that something has changed... no biggie. I did something like 8 virts last weekend, and most of the virt owners emails bounced. Those are no longer active on the site, either... but the virts keep getting logged over and over, and cachers are making multi-mile hikes in a NWR to log them. No harm, and lots of good done there. But a moot point, since virts aren't allowed anyway. I wish they were, or that I had discovered Geocaching in 2001.

  7. Oh, please do tell what cache that is!!!
  8. You can probably Google some of that info, buddy. Also, its almost a year away. I'm sure they'll post that info in the weeks and months to come. I already tried to Google some of that info, Buddy. I also used some RVing sources that I have. None of those will have information on specific sites in a fairgrounds that are there for a specific event, Buddy. Heh. Let the hostilities begin! Maybe GW isn't for everyone, buddy! I've left for the last three GWs with just the coords in my GPS and confidance that things will work out when I get there. They have. Still, a quick search on Google "raleigh carolina RV fairgrounds" finds this: From Good Sams Club forums; You need to contact Fairground Public Safety (919) 612-6767 enter the Fairgrounds -- Gate 11 which is on Blue Ridge Rd. From Goldsboro -- you will come into Raleigh on Hwy. 70-- Hwy 70 -- comes into Raleigh -- take the I-40 exit (right turn) I-40 merges into 440 (Beltline around Raleigh). Continue on 440 -- exit on Hillsborough Rd. then right turn on Blue Ridge Rd. If you are not familiar with the area -- I-40 and 440 on the South side are the same road -- you will need to exit onto 440 to get to the fairgrounds. Happy Trails. Perhaps I wasn't clear, and if that is the case, it's my fault. I am wanting information about the RV sites. I'm pretty sure I could locate the fairgrounds.
  9. Thanks. That's exactly what I needed to know.
  10. The OP is located in Canada, so suggesting that he look up a city on USPS.com is not particularly helpful. Unfortunately, the option to search for geocaches by city is not currently available in Canada. Other than looking up a postal code on Canada Post to start your search with, you can try searching for a cache that contains the name of the city. You mean Canada is NOT part of the good old US of A? Surely you jest.
  11. That makes my little nightime hike seem pretty tame.
  12. Off Topic, but can I make a few suggestions to the OP? I don't particularly wish to see him banned, since he is hiding and finding geocaches. First of all, spend some time lurking in the forums before posting yourself. Read some older threads a few pages back. Get a feel for how things work around here. Try participating in a few threads that others have initiated, rather than starting so many threads yourself. Try to understand that while you may be used to message boards/forums that are populated by kids your age, where posters frequently use net slang, this is not one of those places. Hardly anyone here uses words like "peeps" or misspells words like "xtreme" and "u" to save a keystroke or two. People here also ask rather than demand information. "I want all stories to be told" I knew what you meant, but it could have come across and rather demanding. We don't call people/things/activities/concepts "gay". Geocachers are, on average, about 35 years old, male, and intellectual. That is the typical profile. They will make fun of you if you mistype something. It's kinda in our nerdy sense of humor nature. You might find you get a better experience in the forums if you try to communicate to the audience you are talking to, rather than just typing away like you are on MySpace... I hope these constructive comments are taken in the helpful spirit in which I offer them. Welcome to the obsession we call Geocaching. I also hope this post beats the lock.
  13. Umm, I really never did panic. I knew we had cell signal from the top of the mountain, I just decided to wait to call for help until we actually KNEW where we were, and could ask for what kind of help we needed. However, if had still been lost when it got dark, it would have been a different story. No, I think I stayed pretty calm. Even debated whether to start a fire and shelter in place, but seeing how it was a Wilderness area, and that's not allowed, I decided it was not "life or death" cold enough to justify breaking this rule to the satisfaction of the Federal LEOs. If it had been 10 degrees colder, I would have been all over it.
  14. Would that be the guy who lies awake at night, wondering if there really is a dog?
  15. Thanks to everyone who is sharing their stories on this thread. I hope to see some more so that we can learn from the experiences of others.
  16. But I don't think you are thirteen. What makes you jump to that conclusion? Experience. You haven't seen other 'kids' posting here in the past? He's 13. His thought process, his language skills, his understanding of how the board works, it all lines up. I have a teenage son. The OP's level of development and the classic misspellings are dead on. Even the entitlement mentality evident in the way he asks for interesting caching stories. No offense to the kid, he is what he is. I lurk around from time to time to see what my kid is up to online, and I see this all the time.
  17. I currently have a blue eTrex Legend. I'm thinking that Santa might be bringing a better model, maybe a Legend CX? Anyway, I've been wanting the Topo maps someting fierce. If I load it on my legend, will I still be able to also load it on my new Garmin, whatever that turns out to be? (Assuming, of course that the new unit is compatible with the maps) I really am not asking should I... nor asking about licensing issues. I just want to know if it is technologically possible.
  18. I won't say like the others that an Altiods tin is a lousy container, but the only ones I've see that were in good shape (read: not rusty or soaked) had complete shelter from rain. Like hidded in the roof area of a picnic pavilion, with a strong magnet epoxied inside the bottom of the tin.
  19. This has been brought up and the current status is in the forums at the GeoWoodstock 5 Forums. That is also where most future information will be made available. In short, we are waiting to speak to the fairgrounds people. The North Carolina State Fair just wrapped up this past weekend so they have been pretty busy lately. We hope to talk to them about several items in November. That includes reserving a block of RV spots so geocachers can be together and be assured a spot or at least know the procedures for making a reservation. When we know more, so will you. Thanks. That's what I needed to know.

  21. For your first questions, http://www.geowoodstock5.com/modules.php?n...wpage&pid=1 Ok, so there are 300 RV spots within 1 mile. Any contact info for the RV park? I can't just take off across country pulling a 33' 5th wheel at 7MPG and not know I have a place to land. Reservations would be nice.
