  1. I am looking to contact an old New Jersey player named "Timely". He was active from 2002 through 2005, then tapered off and by 2008 he was done. His last visit was January 2008 and his account has been inactive for many years since, so there is no way to contact him via email. I've tried sending PMs to him but (not surprisingly) got no response. I am looking to contact him because he owns a really old cache (GC87BA, 16.5 years and running) that was placed near my house which has been surviving due to the generosity of some local cachers (myself included), and I would like to adopt it to keep it going. If anyone has any means of contacting him, please either let him know that he's actively being searched out for this reason, or send me a message with how I can get in touch with him myself. Thanks.
  2. Can't be that; as I said I've been getting all of the emails from Groundspeak (pocket queries, etc).
  3. UPDATE: Even though I got that error message from the "Send Validation Email" page, it appears that the validation emails DID get sent. I didn't realize this until after I logged out and tried to log back in again; the site required me to send a validation email (after entering my username/password). I was able to do that successfully via the link provided, and when I checked my mailbox I found several validation emails from geocaching.com. My account now appears to be in working order again. HOWEVER... Why was my email address suddenly invalidated? Why was I given an error message when I went through the "Send Validation Email" page? https://www.geocaching.com/v/send.aspx
  4. This evening I noticed that my profile says 'The "Send Email" feature is disabled because this email address has not been validated by the user.' I've had the same email address ever since I signed up here, it was validated at that time, and I still get all geocaching-related emails (pocket queries, notifications, etc). When I go to the "Send Validation Email" page to re-validate, I'm told 'Your username/password combination does not match. Make sure you entered your information correctly.' But I'm already logged in and everything is working normally. What gives?
  5. Upload a profile photo in PNG or GIF format with transparency. Go to any page where the OLD top banner (the dark green one) is in effect and the transparency is there. Switch to any page where the NEW top banner (the medium green one) is in effect and the transparency disappears, replaced by an ugly white box. Similarly, go to Account Settings (where the new layout is fixed) -> Profile Information, and you'll see your profile photo there with no transparency too.
  6. Well, it turns out the issue was given to the engineering team who, rather than to address the "unsmiley" issue, decided to delete an "Attended" log that I had written for an event cache that we had set up. So now, in addition to the "unsmiley" issue still existing, they've now deleted a legitimate log. Way to go, Groundspeak.
  7. Thanks. I filled out a bug report and was told that it may be a delay in the system. Given that it's been about 8-9 months since I deleted the log, I doubt that. Waiting to see what Groundspeak says about that now.
  8. I work with a nearby nature preserve to create and maintain their geotrail. As part of that responsibility I also have access to their geocaching.com account. Prior to my gaining access to that account, the previous "geocache manager" had logged a find with it, specifically to GC1VPED. That person never actually found that cache; I think it was a sort of "test run". Once I gained access to that account, in the interest of accuracy I deleted the log entry on that cache. However, geocaching.com still thinks that it's a found cache for that account — sort of. It doesn't show up in the "found geocaches" list, it's not counted in the statistics, it doesn't show up in the geocache log list, and if I go to the cache page there's no smiley there — just the green "Log geocache" button. But when I look at the map of the area that cache shows up with a smiley on it. Is there any way I can "unsmiley" that cache? Or is this just another bug in the system?
  9. This seems like an absolute no-brainer, and I would much more appreciate it if your engineers would work on getting this working rather than "fixing" parts of the web site that aren't broken or troublesome. When I'm looking at a geocache listing in the Geocaching app, why can't I simply transfer it to my Garmin (eTrex touch 35t)? I already get notifications and emails on my Garmin via the phone so clearly there's tethering going on. I should be able to call up a geocache listing, tap "Share->Send to Garmin", and have it show up on my Garmin GPS. This is RIDICULOUSLY obvious and would make things a lot easier in the field, yet there's no way to do this without plugging in a GPS with a cable to a computer?
  10. (Sorry, posted in wrong forum. Moving it now.)
  11. Yes, and I thought that too so I played around a bit and discovered it doesn't matter what order you clicked them in.
  12. I'm helping set up a geotrail for a local nature preserve. In doing so I've set up nine traditional caches and one mystery cache. On all nine of the traditional caches, the attribute selection page is exactly the same. On the mystery cache, the attribute selection page is different — everything's in a different order. Why? This makes consistency between caches unnecessarily difficult. Furthermore, I also noticed that even though my attributes are (mostly) the same for both the traditional and puzzle caches, the cache listing pages show the attributes in a different order. For example, on my traditional cache page the attributes list as: Parking Available, Recommended for Tourists, Restrooms Available, Drinking Water Nearby, Scenic View, Takes Less Than 1 Hour, Kid Friendly, Thorns, and Ticks. But on the mystery cache page the attributes list as: Restrooms Available, Drinking Water Nearby, Parking Available, Ticks, Scenic View, Takes Less Than 1 Hour, Kid Friendly, and Thorns. What's the benefit of having multiple different selection and presentation formats for different cache types? EDIT: I also just noticed something else. On all of my traditional caches I have four "NO" attributes set — no camping, no handicapped accessible, no winter access, and no strollers. On some of these caches I have "hike shorter than 1km" selected and on others I have "hike between 1km-10km" selected. All other attributes are identical. On the ones with "hike shorter than 1km" the "NO" attributes show up as camping/handicapped/winter/stroller and the "ticks" attribute shows up BEFORE the "hike" attribute, while on the "hike between 1km-10km) the "NO" attributes show up as camping/winter/stroller/handicapped and the "ticks" attribute shows up AFTER the "hike" attribute.
  13. Right now I have several geocaching-related projects going on. The big one is the relaunch of the geotrail at Plainsboro Preserve (NJ). I built ten new ammo can-based caches (custom paint jobs, custom trinkets, etc) and will be hiding them shortly. I also need to help them set up a "training trail" for some of their projects, and I'm writing up a geocaching brochure for them to distribute to those who want it. Oh, and I'm also redoing their trail map. The official launch is on March 25 so I have about two months to get it all buttoned up. I just finished construction of a very small cache that will be hidden "in plain sight" at a park about a mile from my house. This will likely happen this weekend. I'm about 30% finished with the construction of another cache to be hidden "in plain sight" at another park about five miles from my house. This one's made of wood so I have a lot of sanding and sealing and stuff like that to take care of first. I figure this will be hidden in April. I have a fantastic (IMO) idea for a new cache at yet another park about a half mile from my house but I'm going to need...something that most people wouldn't consider buying in order to make it happen. Not sure if I can do it or not, but if I can it'll be pretty cool. This is just in the planning stage right now, though I've already found a good hiding spot for it. A few months ago my daughter found an *awesome* place to put a new cache. The only problem is it's 18 feet too close to another cache. Once winter is over we're going to revisit the spot and see if we can find a suitable new location for it that's at least near the awesome place. Finally, my daughter and I are starting to build our yearly allocation of handmade trinkets to be distributed to our finds this year. We've got four different new trinkets planned, plus we may revisit a couple of our past trinkets as well.
  14. There's a lot of little annoyances about geocaching but I think the one thing that irks me the most is a blasé cache owner. Admittedly this is a catch-all for a lot of behavior; a "Needs Maintenance" flag that isn't addressed or cleared, a full log book that isn't replaced, a damaged cache container that isn't replaced, etc. I've found that Scout troops are particularly bad at this; apparently there's no requisite to continue to maintain your geocache after you've gotten your "Geocaching" badge so there's a ton of Scout-hidden caches out there in various states of disarray and the Scout(s) who hid it are nowhere to be found and non-responsive to emails and messages. I think the worst of the worst are the cache owners who are more concerned with their next hide than they are with their current hide. There's a cache owner near me who has about 25 hides but doesn't maintain them at all; leaking containers, waterlogged log books, the whole deal. I checked and the cache owner hadn't done any geocaching in a couple of years. Not expecting a response, I contacted her to ask if I could adopt them (several of them are in wonderful locations) and was surprised when she responded. After some back and forth I determined that she didn't want anyone adopting them, she had no plans to maintain any of them, and she had several additional caches that she planned on hiding soon. (That didn't happen as far as I know.) Come to think of it, a very close second to the "irks me the most" title are people who trade crappy and/or inappropriate "trinkets". I'm really tired of finding religious pamphlets, business cards, plastic milk bottle caps, pieces of a toy (like, an arm from an action figure), and junk like that in caches. I also seem to find a lot of medical and personal hygiene stuff; band-aids, individual contact lens cleaners, half-used tubes of Chap-Stick, packets of OTC pain medication, condoms (sealed and unused, thankfully), cigarettes, etc. And what's the deal with people who think leaving disposable cigarette lighters in a geocache is a good idea? Oh yeah, and ACTUAL garbage too — candy wrappers, that little plastic tab that holds the bread bag closed, folded bits of tape, empty water bottles, etc. It's beyond disappointing to find a nice big cache container only to open it up and find a drowned log book, a couple of rusty coins, a soggy copy of the local trail map, a broken pencil, and a yo-yo without the string. Have some pride, people.
  15. I'm in central NJ (Middlesex county). If anyone needs someone to adopt a cache in this area, please let me know.
  16. I'm in the northeast where we were just hit with about 6-8" of snow. My daughter and I had made plans to go geocaching every Sunday, but I'm wondering how practical geocaching is when everything is covered in a blanket of snow. I figure one of three scenarios: We'll get frustrated by not finding it (most likely), we'll get lucky and find it but leave a mess of tracks behind that muggles might get curious about and/or non-muggles would see as a road map to the cache (semi-likely), or we'll see someone else's tracks leading to the cache and have it ruin some of the challenge (least likely, since the caches in our area seem to not be touched for months at a time). Thoughts for the newbies? :-)
  17. iPhone 5, with current versions of iOS 7 and the geocaching app. (Edit: Sorry the size is so large.)
  18. My daughter and I are building our first cache. I was wondering if it's at all possible to create a new cache page with incomplete information, building it up as we build the cache, filling in the blanks as we go (which may take several days to complete), and then when everything is done "pull the trigger" to make the page public. As it is right now it seems that you can't really make a new cache page until after everything is 100% complete, and the page is live as soon as you submit it.
  19. Last weekend my daughter and I tried to find this cache: http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC49BWH_squirrels-hideout We failed, even after reviewing the additional information from other geocachers in the app. According to the other visitors, a user by the name of jimmyg7929 posted updated coordinates that were closer to the cache. I couldn't find those updated coordinates. When I got home I visited the web site on my computer (yeah, I should have checked it on my iPhone while in the field, I know) and noticed that a posting by jimmyg7929 on that page does indeed list new coordinates, but it seems that those coordinates are somehow on a second line in the subject of his message. If you visit that ^^^ above URL and scroll down near the bottom you'll see his post with what looks like a two-line subject, but the problem is that second line doesn't appear in the iOS app at all.
