  1. I was right near here today looking for maldar's River Trail Cache. I didn't find a way to it due to my unfamilairity with Lansing streets. However, I didn't have your cache on my list of area caches. I'll add it to my list and hopefully I'll be in the area in the next week or so. I live in Detroit, 75 miles away, but occasionally work in the Lansing area. You might want to post a message to the MIGO board where more Michigan cachers might see it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/migo/
  2. quote:Originally posted by seeker bp (Team E-Trex):What area of Ohio are you from?? Well, I'm from Cincinnati, raised on Price Hill. I just happen to live in Detroit. My mother still lives across the river in Florence, KY and I try to cache whenever I visit her. If you come to Michigan, look for my Cincinnati Chili Recipe magnets in the caches up here. I like to leave University of Michigan items though whenever I cache in Ohio!
  3. The Three Ponds Causeway Cache had 2 sets of women's panties in the cache! Whoever left them may written something in the logbook but I didn't read far back enough to find it. No online log from that cacher. After 30 years of marriage, I knew better than to bring either one home as a cache trade. I didn't even have the nerve to test thier sniffability http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=1265
  4. There has been talk of another get-together in Michigan. So far none has been organized but there is talk about a Sept. gathering in the Waterloo Recreation Area. Check out the MIGO Yahoo Group for more Michigan discussion. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/migo/ Personally, I'd like to have a get-together at Maybury State Park since there are already 3 caches in the park. Anyone interested in helping plan and organize it? Maybe late September/early October before the cold sets in? Scook - Stephen Cook, Age 55 from Detroit.
  5. For those of us not living in Minnesota, how does this ban effect our prospects for geocaching in Minnesota? Let's speak with our pocketbooks by telling the tourism board about changing our plans to come geocaching in Minnesota. I'm writing to the Minnesota Board of Tourism http://www.exploreminnesota.com/index.asp I'm asking them if my bike and fishing boat are welcome, why isn't my GPS? If that seems a bit negative, then just ask them about geocaching activities for tourists in Minnesota. Super Cacher!
  6. I won't be making it to WorldCon (and haven't for quite a few years either) but I will be going to MidWestCon this coming weekend in the Cincinnati, OH area. I expect to caching in the mornings before everyone else wakes (or sobers) up. I'll be inviting others to join me but the end of June in southern Ohio is usually hot and extremely humid with lots of mosquitos. Not the best time of year for caching but I have a travel bug to drop off, so I'll do at least one cache this weekend. Super Cacher!
  7. I always carry my Compaq Aero with me. I've used a serial cable to interface it to my old Lowrance GlobalNav12. The combination was too cumbersome to be useful. The B&W display is great in the sun. Though I've dropped it, the worst that has happened (so far) is I've lost a stylus. I do have a waterproof case but never use it, just a padded case is enough. What I do use it for is to keep a copy of every cache page that's in my Etrex Legend. Pocket PCs have Internet Explorer built in and I don't bother with the images, just the text. That way I never have to shuffle through papers and or print out the information. (Save them trees!) The only problem is I have to remember to update the pages if the information changes. That's bitten me more than once. Right now, I have about 350 cache pages using up about half of a 32Mb Compactflash card. I travel with a Casio EM-500 also but it's display is useless in bright sunlight. It's memory card has my talking books (Audible.com) to fill up the time between caches. Super Cacher!

  9. Even if the GPS receiver accuracy improves, the physical limitations of using a GPS unit under tree foilage will prevent that accuracy from being effective. The RF satellite signals being used just won't work any better. A completely new system would be needed first. The only improvement would come from only placing geocaches in large open areas which are at or above the surrounding terain. It might be fun though searching for a desert or beach microcache in a sand coated 35mm canister! Super Cacher!

    Caches along 75

It might help if we knew how far along I-75 you'll be travelling. Are you starting in Florida or Toledo, Ohio? It's a long highway! Actually I've been thinking about setting up some caches along I-75 through Ohio as I travel from Detroit to Cincinnati 8-10 times a year. North of Dayton there is little until Toledo. There are caches along I-75 in northern Kentucky and southern Ohio (Cincinnati to Dayton) and caches in northern Ohio (Toledo) through Detroit. Be a bit more specific, so I can help you. Super Cacher!

  13. These dollar store plastic screw top containers have worked great for 2 of my caches through a Michigan winter. Originally they were translucent but a coat of spray paint makes them less obvious. They come in both 3 and 4 quart sizes. The main drawback is that the tops are not wide enough for a CD jewel case. The paint chipped a bit through the winter but every inside stayed dry. The screw top lids make them more animal tamper proof than tupperware style. I make cover the next one in camo tape instead of painting it. The cache container in the background
  14. I've found that image files from Geocities web pages will not work or display properly. At least I've never got them to work right. Only from my other web storage pages. A thought on recruiting new members. We might work with Sporting Goods and Outdoor Outfitters to do GPS "seminars" to introduce others to the sport and gather in existing Geocachers. I've already done 2 presentations for computer clubs. (SEMCO at Oakland U. and FACE in Flint) Of course the hardest part of any organization is geting volunteers to show up!
  15. I just posted the Mid-Michigan Geo-Gathering information to the 2 GPS Usenet newsgroups. It was sent to alt.rec.geocaching and sci.geo.satellite-nav. I certainly hope to be there the 27th. I'll be coming from the city of Detroit by myself and if someone needs a ride from Detroit, contact me and we may work something out. Originally, I was going to another Geocache event that day but this will be a lot closer. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=15037 Maybe we can meet up with this group in the future for a real midwest Geo-Gathering!

  17. I bought my first GPS just to find my way back to my favorite Morel spot. I'm looking forward to some great oyster mushrooms and morels this spring. The big decision will be whether to stop at that woods even if there is no cache in it! It's getting warm here in Michigan and we just had a couple of good rains! Great weather for fungi!
