  1. OK, I'm hooked! Now it's time for a road trip. Wonder how much time it will add for a detour through Indiana when I drive between Detroit and Cincinnati? Anything for a cache!
  2. Dinoprophet's picture reminded me of my photo in the same spot and that I never finished up my Webpage photo album of my Bill And Gary ADVENTURE! I've finished up the pictures and here's a link to the pictures I took with Lost Sailor Bill & Gary's Excellent Adventure III Album
  3. I haven't gotten around to completing the photographs of my Signature item collection but have scanned in my Signature card collection. Most cachers here around Michigan and Ohio that leave Signature cards usually have a Signature item that they leave as well. I personally leave my card and a Cincinnati Chili Recipe magnet at most caches I find in Michigan. In the Cincinnati area, I leave another item. such as a Cincinnati railroad magnet. They already know the recipe. (Caching in the Columbus, OH area though, I usually leave University of Michigan keychains or lapel pins.) Scook's Geocaching Card Collection The MiGO website has a database maintained by Aardvark-MI of both items and cards. MiGO Signature Item Databse
  4. If this is an unactivated MiGO Geocoin, it will be in a plastic pouch with a label on it. From the TravelerTags website, go to Tag Setup/Edit enter the Tag# in the format MIGO12345 and then the passkey and click on activate. From the Michigan Geocaching Organization Website, just enter the 5 (five) digit number only and the passkey to activate the Geocoin. There was a problem when Trippy1976 first set up the logging and activating procedure from the MiGO site but hopefully he's corrected that. You must have created a Traveler Tags login first to do all this. You will then have an activated Geocoin. If you didn't recieve a labeled Geocoin, then all you can do is log the Geocoin, using the Log A Traveler option as being in your possession. I imagine this should have been an unused, unactivated coin you got in trade. If you didn't get what you expected, contact whoever you set up the trade with. Here's a link to my Scook's Personal MiGO Coin
  5. I've canceled my order with Target.com. I'm sure they will say the ad was a misprint and I don't need the hassle of making a return. But they've lost my business for any future orders.
  6. Help! I have not received any cache notices, watch list notices or pocket queries since Monday, the 11th. I had been using my own domain name for Email, Stephen@scook.net. I am receiving other mail to my account so I'm sure it is not my hosting/mail service. However, I have had trouble in posting Email to a few places in the past, but never problems in receiving mail from Geocaching.com or any other place. I have now just changed my profile to use another Email address, scook48227@ameritech.net. I have successfully validated my account but the problem using that account is that Ameritech (SBC/Yahoo) refused to deliver most Pocket Queries. This is the message I received this morning- "Yahoo! Mail Virus Protection detected a virus ""in the file '"3611.gpx"', attached to the enclosed email message. We scanned the file using Norton AntiVirus but were unable to clean it. Therefore, we removed the content of the attachment from the message. Please contact the message sender if you want to receive the attachment. They must clean the file and resend it before we can deliver it to you safely." I changed my Email address back to Stephen@scook.net this morning and did not receive an validation Email after 8 hours. I then changed it again this afternoon to Scook48227@ameritech.net and received a validation within 10 minutes. Am I forced to change mail accounts to receive Emails from Geocaching? Am I also forced to zip all Pocket Queries to receive them? (I don't like the extra work) Am I somehow, unknown to me, being marked as a spammer and mail servers refuse to honor my domain name? If so, anyone know how to correct that?
  7. I could meet you some weekend in Indiana and then shanghai it north into Michigan. Of course, if certain Michigan cachers would get a hold of the Caching Karma Stick, it may never leave the state. Some of them are very adamant about Travel Bugs staying in Michigan.
  8. My main signature item is a Cincinnati Chili Recipe refrigerator magnet I've left over 600 of them at caches in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana along with my calling card. (The only states I've managed to cache in, so far. ) I have made a Travel Bug of one of these magnets Cincinnati Style Chili which has traveled from Ohio to Alaska and down to Georgia and is now somewhere in Mississippi. About the only exception to leaving these magnets is when I'm visiting back home in the Cincinnati area, where leaving one of them is like singing to the choir. They already know and appreciate Cincinnati Chili. In that area, I leave another Cincinnati theme refrigerator magnet. Also, when I'm in the Columbus, OH area, I try to leave a University of Michigan keychain or lapel pin just to get the attention of the OSU fans.
  9. I would definitely NOT recommend the Happy Trails by Beelzebob cache on the south side of Dayton. I have a Travel Bug "Iron Will Racing Bug" right now that wants to go there but the cache is trash. The container (ammo can) is gone and the owner (Beelzebob) has not logged on since September 27, 2003. My real question is - Should I replace the cache container as I did for another cache in Columbus last year and place the TB there or place the TB into another cache? I have found this cache already so I know the location. The Travel Bug owner has not responded to the my log telling him that the cache is missing. I'll be passing through the area next week on my way to Cincinnati and can't decide on a course of action. I don't think I should attempt to adopt this cache since I'm not in Dayton that often.
  10. I was hoping to re-join another group to get some more pictures of this excellent cache. I had even discussed doing it with another cacher on the the Independence Day weekend. I'll be glad to join you for a good laugh (whoops, I meant to help you along in your hunt).
  11. Not being from the area, I'm not too familar with all the caches but these are the quick and easy ones I've done while in Wooster. The Best of the Rest Cache, Wooster Memorial #1 and HardRun Caches are great caches but will take a bit of time and hiking. Christmas Run Cache Grosjean Beach Cache I haven't done this one yet but it's not too far from town Barnard, Spark, and Cisco My Up Ferguson Way cache is a bit far from Wooster but sure could use some visitors as could the other caches in the Mohican area. They all involve a good bit of hiking.
  12. 4leafclover on the the OKIC forum pointed out this website that reveals the TRUTH about Cicadas. Cincinnati's premier Cicada information source Youve been warned now!
  13. And your other TB race Michigan vs Ohio State TB Football is not doing that well either! Can't help you on the Brown vs. Steelers but if the other bug ever gets dropped, I'm watching it and will move it someplace nice and remote in Ohio.
  14. I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio, I just happen to live in Detroit, Michigan!
  15. Nope, not just you! This is part of the error I got this morning. Likely there is not enough storage allocated for this operation rather than the hard drive actually being filled. It will be fixed "Real Soon Now".
  16. Trippy's out of town so, of course, the Website is down again. (Has been since last night) Oh well, IRC still works just fine. See you all in chat!
  17. So I guess jogging in a NWR would be prohibited. And hiking for pleasure, without the intent of observing wildlife. Under a strict interpretation of the the valid uses according to the law, yes, jogging and casual hiking may not be permitted. There are National Wildlife Refuge areas where any entry is not allowed without a special use permit. Interestingly enough, notice that trapping is not included in the 6 Wildlife Dependent Recreational Uses,Their guidelines discuss trapping and say it may be permitted but is not included under the coverage of the law. Hunting is not even freely permitted in the Shiawassee NWR in Michigan and has separate dates for deer and goose "management" that are not the same as the state hunting seasons.
  18. These are the uses the the FWS think are compatiable with the law: From Final Compatibility Regulations Pursuant to the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act 1997 Wildlife-dependent recreational use, and Wildlife-dependent recreation mean a use of a national wildlife refuge involving hunting, fishing, wildlife observation and photography, or environmental education and interpretation. The National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act of 1966 (16 U.S.C. 668dd–668ee), specifies that these are the six priority general public uses of the National Wildlife Refuge System. If we want to appeal the ban of Geocaching in the NWRS, our appeal for an exemption would have to meet these following NWRS guidelines
  19. I voted YES. But... I consider changing the rules of the game without asking the other players childish and stupid. If Geocaching had included a "pirate" role-playing character as a part of the adventure, my vote would have been the opposite. You can't really change the way any game is played without asking everyone else playing to consent. As it is now, some caching players are going to take back their ball (the cache) and just go home and there is no more game. If there is to be buccaneering of caches, it must be done with the consent of both sides. It's not practical at this stage, but a cache could have been categorized either as a "lootable" or "safe" cache if the the whole sport had started differently. "Adrift in a world he never made!"

Actually we're not tree hugging whackos, we're just cheap. I haven't bought a set of AA alkaline batteries in 2 years! "Adrift in a world he never made!"

  22. I only read the forums for the Hydee posts! The person below me doesn't post as often as UMC! (UMC better get his act together soon and start posting like he used to do!) "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  23. Since I don't track Virtual caches, I hadn't seen this cache on my screen. Now I'll have to look for it. I am familiar with the area but not sure of what the plaque says. I'm not from the area but I do own property near Baldwin. Site of my Forager's Forest cache. Handingon is in the Big Rapids area but she is not active on the GC forums. Speaking of your cache, I wonder why they approved it since a regular cache could be placed at this location? Sometimes, the approvers turn down everything, other times they allow any cache. (That's not to say there's anything wrong with your cache.) "Adrift in a world he never made!"
  24. I have both an Etrex Legend and Magellan Meridian (Green). I've had the Etrex longer 1-1/2 years and it did the job well enough. The upgrades that let add your name and information to the startup screen and the ability to store 1000 waypoints is really great for a multi-state cacher like myself. Noticed Differences- The Etrex patch antenna works great in the open but loses signal before the Meridian does under heavy tree cover. However, when you do lose signal, the Etrex lets you know immediately. The Magellan may let you walk for minutes without any indication of signal loss. The heading just remains fixed at the last good signal. The Etrex updates the position much more often than the Magellan. The pointer will swing towards the cache faster than the Meridian even if they both have signal lock. I've often walked past the cache for 100-200 feet before the Meridian tells me I've past the cache. The display on the Meridain is much larger which it easier to read while driving. Especially for us old near-sighted folk. The Meridian display is a bit chunkier and details are sometimes overwritten. The Etrex also hides details or waypoints at different levels of zoom but not as bad. The backlight display is about the same at night but the Meridian is easier to read with the larger display. Again, a vision problem on my part. The Etrex has a larger set of waypoint symbols. They've even added open and closed chests symbols for Geocaching. When using the map display for a GO-TO, The Etrex show a line from your current position to the destination and updates that line as you move. The Meridian show a line from where you started the GO-TO to the destination and never updates that line unless you start a new GO-TO. I prefer the Etrex method but the Meridian method would always show your starting point if that important to you. I rely on the breadcrumb trail for backtracking. Battery life is about the same but the Meridian might be a bit shorter. I use NiMH rechargeables and always have spares so running out of power is never a problem for me. The Meridian under certain conditions has lost waypoints. This has happened when the low battery display comes on and I ignore it. Occasionally this has meant newly saved waypoints will be gone after I replace the the batteries. This has never happened on the Legend under similiar circumstances. Turning off the Meridian and then back on with very low batteries seems to record the waypoints. I've probably missed a few points of difference but I have both for because I wanted one to have with me on a daily basis to do caching after work. I keep one in my work van and the other at home or in the car. "Adrift in a world he never made!"
