  1. I have added a live chat section to the forum that is at the bottom of the main page. This will enable users to talk live with other users and carry on real time conversations. There are still some visual things on the site that have changed and that I am working on fixing.

  2. Sweet man! I too am a fellow Jeeper/Cacher Addict so I completely understand where you are coming from. In fact my username use to be "JEEOCASHER". But I eventually got tired of explaining what it meant to people and changed it. But anyhow thanks for the heads up. BTW, if your looking for a sweet drop down tailgate conversion for your YJ...my brother's got a sweet kit he builds and sells at swagoffroad.com which is located in Oregon City.

    Take care,

Thanks for the reply. If you have any GPS trails that you have saved from Washington I would love to create a Washington Trails topic on my forum. I have a guy that is just posting some from Montana and we have added that state. Let me know. Thanks!

  3. I just launched a new website for the Idaho area. I am an outdoor kind of person and am into Geocacheing, offroading, and camping. I have put together a new website, www.offroadidaho.com to document trails and camping locations. The site also has a forum with documented Jeep trails and sections for camping and geocaching. Like I said, the site is new and is just getting going. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Email me through the offroadidaho.com website.

  4. Try Garmin's MapSource. I use it and it works great. You can also down load nroute from Garmin to use with MapSource.

MY mistake. You need MapSource and nroute to have realtime navigation on a topo map.

How funny, I already own the Topo U.S. 2008 Mapsource disc. I downloaded the nRoute and it worked like a charm, exactly what I was looking for. I just never knew nRoute existed. Thanks guys!!!

  5. I have several Topo map software programs to use on my computer but none of them seem to let you plug in a GPS and let you track on your computer. For instance Microsoft makes their yearly Streets and Trips mapping program that lets me plug in a USB GPS antenna and track real time on my laptop.

I want a Topo software program that will allow me to connect either my USB GPS, my Garmin Vista HCx, or my Garmin 200W to track real time on my computer. Anyone know of a good Topo program to do this?

  6. OK so I pulled up Google Earth again and under the temporary places where the Geocache stuff is. Under this it says something like you have exceeded your number of allowed views for the day, try back tomorrow. What is this all about?

  7. Am I the only one having problems with the Google Earth link on the Geocache website? Google Earth opens but none of the caches show up on the map. Quit working after the upgrade......

  8. I know from the "My geoarsenal" thread that a lot of you carry firearms when you geocache.

For those of you who do, how exactly do you carry while geocaching? I know it depends largely on state laws, but do you wear it openly or conceal it? Do you holster it for quick access or put it in your backpack?

My concern is not just with safety and following the law, but also with comfort. My state allows concealed carry, but my gun is too big to conceal comfortably unless I wear a jacket or some sort of outer garment (I also have a pocket .22, but that's not likely to be very helpful against anything nasty I'd run across out in the woods). And even though it's also legal to carry openly I don't want to frighten or make uncomfortable anyone I might run across on a trail.

I have a basic belt holster that works well, and I could probably hide it sufficiently with a simple vest (I'm planning on getting a blaze orange vest anyway to lessen my chances of getting shot by a nearsighted hunter), and that's the option that I'm leaning towards.

I still haven't decided for sure that I'll carry, but since I usually cache alone I (and my wife) would feel more comfortable if I did. If I do it will only be for out-of-the-way caches, but I'd just like to get some feedback on carrying options.

    Thanks.

I do most of my cacheing outdoors and out of the city. I carry my .357 in a vertical shoulder rig with spare ammo pouch on the other side.

  9. While cleaning out some cabinets I found a couple of plastic peanut butter jars lying around. After throughly cleaning them I thought I'd try to make them into caches. I have a nearly full roll of camo duck-style tape but would rather paint them.

Has anyone tried painting over tape and if so how did it hold up. I'm looking to make the jars a little bit sturdier and also add abit of a personal touch like my other camo painted containers. Is it a good idea or should I stay away from it?

I have been using the Krylon Fushion paint made for plastics and it seems to work awesome!!! This particular paint really does bind well to plastic surfaces. I have used the dark green color on several different brand plastic containers and have been very happy.

  10. While geo-caching i have noticed some pretty neat team cards and have made a card of my own.

was wondering if there has ever been any thought of perhaps making Trading cards so that they may be collected and traded not unlike baseball cards. My thought is this. On the profile page there could be a

spot where if you chose to print a trading card based on the info you provided or didn't provide plus an image. then you could laminate the card and leave it in caches for others to collect or keep some in the caches you own or simply trade them with other geo cachers at geo caching events. this way it could keep all the trading cards uniformily sized and designed.

Just a thought after seeing some of the work put into the business card sized team cards i have seen in our area.

If you wanted to get some real cards made I would use this company http://www.mintcards.cc/big1.php?id=659 . These are an example of cards that I had made a couple of years ago. The quality looks and feels like real baseball cards. They are totally customized to your specs and the pricing is reasonable. As you can see on the back of mine you can even put a sponsor and their logo if you can find someone to foot the bill for you.

  11. Is there a way on the website to see all of your found and placed caches in map view (note: not the view in the premium membership where you see the ones found/not found in queries, but more of a pictorial view in your profile of the US and/or country and world view that highlights countries, states, etc, where you have found/placed a geocache ? I have seen a few people use http://www.world66.com to create their own personal maps manually, but I would like to see an option to view caches like this in an automatic fashion. Thanks.

I have done it using Microsoft Streets and Trips. I started with a pocket query and then imported the data into Streets and Trips. Click on my user name and view my profile, the maps are on there for people to see.....

  12. We're pretty new (started in July....60+ caches). I'm not sure if this should bug me as much as it does, so figured I could ask here. If a cacher leaves something very coveted (say, something handmade that's very popular and "wanted"), is it acceptable for the cache owner to go and grab it? I know sometimes a person who has previously found a cache will return to it to grab stuff. Is all of this type stuff generally accepted or is it bad form? Really makes me wonder whether we should ever even try for any of the "special" things noted in logs....after all, we would actually have to FIND the cache to get the prize. Sorry for my rant.

My idea is that if someone places a cool item in my cache that I want, I will contact the person that placed it there by email and ask them if they would mind me going and trading an equal item for their item. If they want me to leave it for someone else, then I will. I think that is more than fair even though it is my cache......

  13. OK so like many of you I have a mileage tracking travel bug. I always drop my bug into caches that I find, but I also hide quite a few caches. I have never dropped my mileage bug into caches but I am thinking of starting to do that. Do you think this practice is ok? After all I am traveling the mileage for the Geocaching hobbie......

  14. I was not aware about the requirement of the log, I will read up. Also I have never found a wet filmcanister because they were all hidden well. I would also be useing the white filmcanisters that seem to be a little more heafty. I saw a bag of 30 of them on ebay for about $6 I think. Doesnt get more cost effective than that.......Thanks for all of the info.

  15. I want to put out some film canister caches and am looking for the way to put a log in it. I have seen the strands of lined paper but they seem to be so confusing when people get them mixed up and the dates are everywhere on them.

Any creative ideas for paper logs in these caches? How about non paper logs, anyone using the internet in some way for people to log the finds? Maybe like leaving a piece of paper in the cache with a key word or phrase and people have to email it to you to be considered a genuine log of the cache?

Any ideas or feedback would be great!!!

  16. May want to try this guy out too Cachestats

Gives you a lot of data on your own caching efforts, and produces output that you can plug into your profile page. A LOT of data.

Thanks for the cache stat download. So on the Statcounter.com stuff, I can add a counter to any of my cache's and see how many people view my caches? Is it easy to do? (I have not had time to visit the website for the counter yet)

  17. I have seen a lot of peoples profile pages that have special maps or stat sheets that show their progress. I also saw a cache listing that had like a page counter that showed how many people have looked at their cache online. Can someone direct me to some good websites where I can download or aquire these add on features?

Anyone want to just elaborate on this topic and give me some further insight?

    Thanks!

  18. I was wondering if there is anything in the works about the way people can search for caches. For instance, I only like looking for regular size caches. Will there be a way to filter out all the other size caches and only show regular size ones in a specific area I am viewing on a map? Maybe I want to filter out vitual caches while looking at the map? Are any of these filters a possibilty for the future?
