  1. As far as I know the offer expired on Dec 31 2006, so even if there is a sticker the deal may be of no value.
  2. The Fact that anyone wants to “be nasty enough to get the moderator to lock down this thread” shows a real misunderstanding of what the forum is all about. Please check out the following… Groundspeak Forum Guidelines: “While most people are courteous and polite; there are some individuals that choose to behave in a disrespectful and irresponsible manner.” “Personal Attacks and Flames will not be tolerated. If you want to praise or criticize, give examples as to why it is good or bad, general attacks on a person or idea will not be tolerated.” It would be a perfect world if we all agreed and were of the same mind set, but since this is not a perfect world it would at least be a better world if anyone who wanted to “be nasty enough to get the moderator to lock down this thread” instead got kicked off this site!! Again congratulations on winning your fight with Magellan and I hope you enjoy your winnings, the topo program is a great benefit to caching and I would suggest looking at the “MapSend Lite Beta” program on the Magellan website as it will add the 3-D to your topo program.
  3. Good for you! I dont get the negitave responces. I too had to fight to get the Canadian Topo software, in reality the offer was totally unfair. The sticker on the box did NOT say "not available in Canada" and/or "limited time offer". After purchasing the product and going online I found the details. If the offer is not available don't put the sticker on the box for units ment to send to Canada. The product was sold in Canada with a sticker inside the battery compartment stating the product was made for shipment to Canada so why not offer the Canadian Topo maps? I have no use for US topo maps, I paid in Canadian dollars, from a Canadian retailer (Canadian Tire actually) for use in Canada!!!!! If Magellan sent two copies of the software, the problem falls on their shipping department. How many other Canadians didn't get the offer? Maybe if Magellan did the right thing to start with they wouldn't of had any problems!!!!
  4. We drive the Toyota Yaris. Cheap on gas to get to the cache but I sure wouldn't want to take it down some of the backroads. Love the car, love walking down backroads
  5. I would suggest checking out two places for info. 1.) Ontario Geocaching Association (www.ontgeocaching.com) 2.) Central Ontario Geocachers (www.centralontariocachers.com) The Central Ontario Geocachers are a very active group with a great website and a number of "events"
  6. The 500 has a built in 8 MB of available memory. If you want to load maps or tones of POI's/Geocaches you will want the extra memory.
  7. The two types I think you are talking about are Secure Digital Cards (SD card) and Micro SD cards. The 500 takes the regular (re cheaper) SD card. I am currently using a 2GB card in my 500 with great results. The MicroSD's are used in the popular Garmin 60CX series. Basically the same except the Micros are real small, actually to small in my opinion.
  8. As far as I know there are no maps products that can be uploaded to the Magellan other then "Magellan" products. I know you most likely have already done so but... Check that you have your GPSr set for max mapping detail
  9. No. Different voltage. (3 AAA's=1.5 X 3= 4.5v while li-ion is 3.7 volt) I wouldn't want to try this unless I had the $$$ to replace my GPSr for the betterment of science.
  10. http://www.magellangps.com/support/softwar...plorist_500.asp
  11. FYI Some of the 500 series came with the li-ion. I don't know why, my did as well BUT I wouldn't count on it being included. If you check the web site it clearly states it only comes with the AAA battery pack. I think Magellan just got rid of the 500 units with the li-ion battery after discontinuing them (the 500LE is the exact same unit minus the li-ion battery). I would check inside the box before buying the GPS as the battery is worth $20-40 depending on the current promotions. I like my eXplorist 500, and for the money its a great deal.
  12. The 500LE uses three AAA batteries and according to many users only gets a small amount of working time with these batteries. Magellan does not seem to list actual working time on a set of batteries. As for what solutions are available 1.) Get rechargables, NiHm. You will need 6-9 since the unit uses three at a time. 2.) Purchase the rechargable Magellan li-ion battery that last up to 17 hours 3.) Check out the forum articles on the Motorola battery #SNN5595B which is reported to work just as well as the Magellan battery but at a lower price. I would suggest checking out the Magellan web site and looking at the accessories section for your 500LE as I think there still is a sale on the battery/charger. I don't understand why Magellan discontinued the 500 and kept the 500LE. The unit was designed for a li-ion battery and had the ability to use AAA's as a emergency back-up not the other way around.
  13. Sorry Its not listed on the Magellan website but Yes there is a Topo 3D Canada that can be unlocked on the MapSend software that comes with the explorist GPS units. As above replay noted just 3D mapping on PC
  14. As far as I know there is no such thing as a Magellan Topo 3D Canada. There is a MapSend Topo Canada and a MapSend Topo 3D USA. The 3D feature on the US maps allows for "3D maps on your PC" but just the standard view on your GPS Hope this helps
  15. Just a quick note. I have been using the Magellan GPS315 until just a few weeks a go. I have compaired the accuracy with a Garmin 60Cx and a Magellan eXplorist 500 and in both cases the units matched almost exactly. I love the GPS 315's easy to use buttons and wish that my new eXplorist 500 had the same options for screens! I will keep my old 315 as a back-up GPSr unit as I still trust it to get me where I want to go
  16. I have used both the Magellan eXplorist 500 and the Garmin 60Cx among other units. It seems that maybe if there was some more real competition for GPSr manufactures the products would be better designed! All units from all manufactures are lacking intellegent design. *Most GPSr units can not be easily used with gloves on (a must for Canadian winters) *Screens are still to small *Mapping software is poor and out of date *Unit cost is very high *Warrantees are limited *Customer support is limited Products are not produced with the end user in mind!
  17. I find it quite disturbing that so many of us (Geocacher’s) are fighting over Environmentalism! Most Geocacher’s respect the environment and many help to protect it (see CITO) but, there are also many people who paid the big dollar (over $650 in Canada) for a top end GPS unit and some topo. software and want to rack up the finds regardless of what gets in their way. Just like all outdoor activities some controls have to be placed in effect to minimize the POSSIBLE damages. I live just outside Algonquin Park in Ontario and I can see that if you let every visitor to the area with a GPS unit go crazy there will be nothing “natural” left to cache in. Unfortunately many people forget that they are not alone in whatever quest or activity they participate in and while one persons footprint makes a small impact, if you multiply it out over hundreds or thousands of people the damage is overwhelming! Most environmental groups do not want to stop people from Geocaching or enjoying the outdoors, but just want people to be more responsible. The problems arise when either side gets stupid and jumps up on a soapbox and starts blurting out garbage (like some of the responses’ offered in this forum) so my advice is to make sure Geocacher’s stay cool and demonstrate that we can be responsible and that we are, as a group, concerned about the environment and our impact! It makes sense to me to protect the natural environment and we should all be pushing towards this goal, if not stay in the city and look for micro caches!
  18. Hello I have an older Magellan GPS 315 that I have been using for years now. I have been lucky enough not to ever require support. However I am considering upgrading and after reading a lot of the materials online I still don't know which company (Garmin, Magellan, etc) to trust, it seems everyone has a horror story! It seems I can find a GPS unit from most of the manufactures that meet my needs and within my price limit and most manufactures have a one year warranty and say they have great customer service but after reading some of the reviews Im spooked about everyone. I would like to hear from some others on the quality of customer service and support.
