  1. Myself, I would use a laptop, wireless internet, GSAK and PQ's for the zipcode your in or heading to. It works real well for us anyway. Logscaler
  2. How about some window flags? Not my idea. 6ftzpr's Idea. I heard it at a cache last night and it sounded good. Logscaler.
  3. Wow. It seems like this page is getting to be a full time read. Here in Central Oregon, another cacher has passed the 1 K mark. Congrats to Elkjim and his Mrs. as they are now in the 4 digit group. Logscaler.
  4. The following is my opinion on this subject and if you (generic you) get insulted easy, skip to the next comment. 3... 2.. 1. I want it. I want it all. I want it ALL NOW! I wish that slow logging was my only concern. Life would be so sweet then. You (still a generic you) who have a problem could all quit your day jobs, get a swing shift job and that would put you up and wide awake at something like 2 in the morning. Or you (same generic you) could get a graveyard shift and that would put you in front of your screen at somewhere around 7 in the morning. Then you could take your own sweet time logging all your caches. How cool would that be? Seems to me like the complaints I see here are like gas pumps, check out lanes, traffic control lights, etcetc. You (same generic you as above) hate having to wait in line yet you keep showing up at the same time and running into the same problem. And bitching about it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And Red just capped it for me. quityerbitchinandgetalife. I warned you and if you have a problem with it, tough. Logscaler.
  5. Tem K9 Sorry, I have not been back to this thread in a while. No change in the magnet that I can tell, even after running it through the hot process of the laminator. Logscaler.
  6. I also build all my cache reports in other programs - GSAK to be exact (and works if needed as a last ditch effort) - and copy and paste the reports to the cache page. I have run upwards of as many as 20 - 30 logs in an hour doing it this way. Even on Sunday night. The nice thing about GSAK is there is a button to punch that takes you right to the cache page your working with instead of having to surf around looking for it. As for PQ problems, very few and usually my fault. If your running one PQ everyday, those will run off the server last. New PQ's seem to run right away most of the time. Also, weekends on GC are like weekdays on the freeway, a lot more people trying to be in the same place at the same time. Logscaler.
  7. What is the problem here? Red and I cache together as much as possible. But when I work several hundred miles from home for weeks or years at a time, coming home on weekends most of the time, I don't wait for her to show up and help me. I stay in a travel trailer when away from home. And the more I am in it, the smaller it gets. I gotta get out. Caching is one of the ways we get some free time from the household chores, kids, grandkids, phones - we do not have a cell phone and do not plan on having any - so we take off at daylight, hit some caches, grab a Sub or burger or something and find a quite spot to eat and chat. Red does not hunt caches by herself but she runs a mean map reading course. She has also learned GSAK, downloading PQ's, uploading and downloading waypoints to the gpsr and maps, etc. I.E., she is the navigator on the road. But, and I stress BUT, If your planning on a life together as a couple, then you will have to make the choice between what is your own "space" and your joint ventures. There has to be some sort of middle ground you can come up with. Save certain types of caches she does not like to do for your own trips. The rest are a together thing. Gotta run, more forums to read. Logscaler and Red.
  8. If you wanted to snag Nevada on your way through, drop South from Twin Falls, Idaho to Wells, Nevada on Highway 93. This will put you onto Interstate 80 where you can head back to Salt Lake City. Adds something like 80 miles and a couple hours.
  9. Sorry about derailing the thread. Last weekend, Red and I where near a cache in a widespot. Where a bunch of construction equipment was parked. It was evening and getting dark. First car by? State Trooper. Pulled right in. Rolled his window down and asked if everything was alright. I told him I was looking for a geocache. He just got a big grin, said have fun and left. Just right. Logscaler and Red.
  10. PNWadmin has to be nice seeing as he now CONTROLS your caches, right? At least be nice for a while until their true colors show up and not try to run them out of town before they have their chance. No, I am not trying to kiss up seeing as I really don't give a rat's backside where they are from, which area they cover, gender, sexual preference, eye color, shoe size or whatever. It seems to me that so long as they are willing to give the JOB a shot AND that we need more approvers, it should not matter who they are as geocachers. Give them a fair chance for crying out loud. (Even if this is a load) Logscaler. Opps, sorry about the typo. Stupid fingers this morning it seems. (( PS )) But to add something else, RK, If you know of an area that there are restrictions on, why not put your best foot forwards and via private e-mail, inform the new approvers about those areas? Seems to me like that would make their job that much easier instead of having to learn of those places the hard way.
  11. Cascadepkr and Eagle-Eyes broke into the 1000 finds club March 21st at Trail to Flat Iron. Congrats ! Hope you find many more. Logscaler and Red.
  12. Team K-9: I have also used those business card sized magnets for a stage or three. I get the numbers and hints I need, print them out and paste them to the sticky side of the card. Then I use the business card size laminator pouches and seal everthing watertight. Run them thru several times - waiting for them to cool between trips - to make sure of a good seal. And when you slap them onto a guardrail, handrail, bridge I-Beam, etc etc, they stay real good and are very hard to see or even feel. And real easy to change if need be. Logscaler.
  13. If you have a problem with sharpie tracks, pack some dry-erase markers with you and a rag. Rub over the sharpie with the dry erase, wipe it off and it will remove it. But you had better dadgum well replace those numbers with something for the next cachers, and the next and the next, etc etc. But it seems to me there is no problem unless someone makes it ito a problem by calling attention to it. And am I to assume your the one person on this planet that follows all the traffic laws as well? I see no problem with leaving waypoints written on the backside of street signs or label maker tags or stickers as long as everything is discrete and low visability. But lets get back on topic and away from the high marking; I use copper pipe I have salvaged. I cut it to lengths, split it and flatten it. I pack a flock of them with me as well as a bearing block from a train truck, a 4 lb hammer, some concrete nails, a cordless drill with bits and drywall screws. Whenever I need one, I stamp whatever information I need on them, drill whatever holes I need and either use the concrete nails to affix them to rocks or the drywall screws to mount the tags on softer items. I also use the same stuff for tog tags for my bowwows. Getting them to hold still while I use the drywall screws to stick the tags to their ears is interesting but that is another thread. Just my nickels worth. Meet me on the trails for your change. Logscaler.
  14. But not all Hemlock is poisonous. Mountain Hemlock - Tsuga mertensiana Western Hemlock - Tsuga heterophylla And the odds are, you have some in your house right now. (Just trying to lighten things up, not to hijack this thread.) Logscaler.
  15. 32 cache finds. 19 plus hours - nonstop 450 plus miles By myself. And I did this at a time when there where less the 300 caches in the state. No problem anymore to find 20 plus a day and as many as 60 plus a weekend. And if we went to a town that had lots of caches we had not found yet, I think we could bust a 100 plus day. Logscaler.
  16. Yes, I pretty much agree with CR. The only reason I keep track of any of my numbers is due to people asking what we have. People outside of the geocaching game mostly. The rest seem to track our numbers better then we do. I like to track milestone numbers for people in our local group just to see how things are going. The reason I keep track of others numbers is when I see that they have said there is a problem one way or the next with a cache. I base the validity of their statement based on their hide ratio as much as their find ratio. If a cacher has over a thousand finds scattered all through the types of hides, over a hundred hides and claims their is a problem with a cache, I tend to put a lot of weight to their claim. Someone new to the game with 10 - 20 finds, zero hides has to have backup from several cachers. The rest of the numbers are just fluff. And a cache a day? Get real on that one. Sure, it can be done in a lot of places but I have done some scouting for a trip this summer. Put a 100 mile radius around Circle, Montana and you will get 33 cache - the last I looked anyway. And the same goes for a lot of places here in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana, Nevada; etc. Am I going to drive 100 miles a day to log a cache? Yea, right. We have what they call canyons out here that you can just about throw a rock across that are around a mile deep and with a wicked river in the bottom. To drive around them takes all day or longer. Sure, that cache is only 1.5 miles away. Crow miles. Highway miles can easy be well over a hundred and several hours. Enough on that for now. If I was to make any number important enough to try and track with this game, it would have to be a top 10 or 25 list. Logscaler.
  17. Congrats RK. Just think where you would be if your caching fingers where as fast as your stirring fingers! Logscaler.
  18. Another Bend based team has topped the 1K mark. West Coast Weenies, Congrats guys. Logscaler.
  19. Just picked two off me today in the Redmond, Oregon area. Getting way to warm way to fast. Not cold and wet enought his year to smite the littel beggers. But the good side is, the grass and brush fires we will have this summer should roast a lot of them. Logscaler.
  20. I had one on me - but not in - December 26, 2004 near Eugene after a trip around Pisgah Park. Not cold and wet enough to do the little buggers damage I guess. Logscaler
  21. And to top that off, I work with a guy who's Father was the packer for the G.L.O. - Government Land Office - team that installed this marker and hundreds of other in the John Day, Oregon area. Logscaler.
  22. Refining my process and doing away with several clicks and opens and such as. Whittling away a little at a time that way if something does go wrong, I have a base to start with and try something else. Thanks for all the pointers guys. John. I did as you suggested on the placed and it seems as I have already found the oldest in the County - 1898. Logscaler.
  23. Okay guys, see if someone can explain to me what is going on. First off, I get the Zipped .dat file for the county in Oregon I am after. I unzip it which gives me a ***.dat file. Then I drag the unzipped file to the desktop, right click and rename it with whatever county it is, right click again and "open with" and point it to notepad. Then I drag to the bmgpx folder and it spits out a gpx file which I then drag and drop into gsak. It works for me but I get the feeling I ain't doing something right or in order. Do I need to change something somewhere or leave well enough alone? And if it matters any, I and my Basset Hound are on about the same level for understanding computers so KISS it for me. Logscaler.
  24. Well, I have been playing with it for a while now and all of the sudden, I have GSAK files for the benchmarks. The only thing is, I ain't sure just what happened. (or when) Even a blind squirrel gets a nut once and a while I guess. Logscaler.
  25. AHHH! Thanks gnbrotz. Now to see if I can get the hang of this. Logscaler
