  1. Just to dump my nickels worth about “Abandoned” caches.

I have noticed a person dropping caches from Oklahoma to somewhere West as they follow the Lewis and Clark Route. How does that person expect to maintain those caches? Hope that someone else will drop everything and go do repairs for him? The one he has on the Lochsa River in Idaho will be about 75 - 100 mile from anybody in Idaho or Montana who is now in Geocaching. In my opinion, these type of caches should not even be approved. To me, these are pre-made "abandoned" caches. No thought or plans to coming back to look over their caches.

As for signing a disclaimer that you promise to maintain caches, If these people are not

going to hold themselves responsible now, how would making them sign off onto anything improve things? What will this type of person do if they have screwed up numbers for the hide?

What will this type of person do to maintain their cache if notified that their caches needs a new container, logbook, etcetc, or removed?

    Nothing.

Unless it was to put out a plea for someone to go fix it for them.

I have caches scattered for over 400 miles. BUT, I also work near or travel past those

caches somewhere around once a month, Or I have had people volunteer to fix problems

for me. I have not asked to have help and I made a note to the cache page that I would be

    to the cache ASAP.

Just a small rant. Thanks for your time.

  2. If you got lost with the 315 I would not want to be trying to follow you. I only found about 175 caches with the 315. I used it to find my way back and forth from deer and elk stands and hunts.

I would think you would have troubles with just about any GPSR if the 315 gave you troubles. Just MHO. If I had to choose again, I would still get the 315. Or even the 330 if I wanted to upgrade a bit.

Tell you what orygun, you get the 315 and let me know when you are coming to the east side, I will give you a cable to hook the 315 to your computer and car/truck. Later, logscaler.

  3. icon_frown.gif Man, three days for a record to stand and it gets beat. I guess I will just have to come back down there. icon_biggrin.gif But, NO MORE " Hot or Cold " games guys. icon_rolleyes.gif

Know lets see, if I leave the house at 2 am and drive like hell South, that puts me at ......... icon_rolleyes.gif

  5. Well after reading about Quads and missnomers adventures and seeing Quads "challange" I went out and about looking for a new best. They had hit 25 in a day and I had hit 15 ssoooo....

I left home at 4:00 am from Bend and headed South and then West towards Butte Falls. The first stop was at Diamond Lake at 6:15 and I finished at Quad's " The Beginning" at 8:30 pm and then headed home.

    Total's : 31 finds, zero misses;

    19 hours and 512 miles.

One cache had people around the area that I did not trust leaving my rig near them so I turned around and left.

I think that if I had planned better and had Red as my co-pilot with me, we would have nailed around 50 finds for the day.

I would like to thank all those persons in the Butte Falls area and in the Klamath Falls area for having some great caches to go to and some really nice views to and from their caches. I Have to admit that I found zero lame caches in any of those I hunted. Again, Thanks guys, a great job and worth the effort if you are after one cache or 50.

    Again, Thank you.

  6. Oregone :

Ya got me wondering so I had to check. As I had not even thought about this very much, it took me a little digging for it but here goes : Oregon - 22 of 36

    Washington - 8 of ??

    Idaho - 7 of ??

And Red says it sounds like a little bit of a challange to try for all the counties before you get them. Although, as I look at the map, it look like there just might still be a couple counties without caches. I will check that aspect first and maybe fix it. At one time, I was going to plant a cache in all 36 counties but I got to thinking about the troubles of looking after them all.

  7. Well I hate to throw a hitch in your get along but, As for those pins and rocks your looking for, the distance from one to the next is in a flat plain so you will have to allow for slope when doing the distance thing, and you might want to check and see if there has been any shift in the declination from then to now as well as if the original survey was under true north or magnetic. Also, you should/might be able to find old blazes on trees or stumps that follow along or beside the line of travel. Another clue would be to get arial photos and check for "edges" from one timber type to the next, look for old wire sticking from trees, old boards nailed to trees and old scars from someone "trimming' limbsa for running the line. You might try going down to a local collage of some sort that has a forestry class and see if they would be willing to practice their arts of finding and or locating lost property lines as part of their classes. Also, if you have "public" lands or state lands on any side, the might have a map showing edges. And if not your side, maybe the next lot over and from those pins you could find yours.

    Just some thoughts.

  9. Good for her.

As for getting 25 in a day, as Red and I did 30 in 2 days, 15 each day, and we started at 9:00 am and not 6:00 am and we had to stop at dark at 6:00 pm and we drove down there from Bend and as she planned and plotted and picked and choice, I wonder why she did not get 30 or better. Oh well, once she gets out from under the influence of Quad and Bufford and Gloom, Maybe she will one day get good at it.

  10. HHHMMMM, it seems as I did something wrong somewhere along the line. My 315 and DODGE RAM PICKUP where only good for about 175 caches. I guess if I would have had a Garmin and the (whateverscrapiron)like someone else in here I would be over a 500 by now.:)

  11. Red and I have pulled a couple "raids" as we term it, one for 16 hits in 2 days and one raid for 30 hits in 2 days. The first thing I would tell you is that no matter how you plan, something will go wrong. The next is do not over estimate the amount of time you are willing to drive or hike. We started out checking for a starting point cache and then working in a logical pattern I.E. a road system or trail system or circular pattern around a central hub. We then copy just the main cache info to Works and modify it as needed, numbering them in the order we want to travel. We found and printed out about twice as many caches as we thought we could hit, this allowed for road troubles, snow, missing caches, whatever. Print them all out, with any notes of your own, put them on a clip board and away you go. We tried to have 1 1/2 times cache trade items for the caches we planned to hit. This allowed for restocking poorly stocked or plunderd caches if need be. Lots of luck.

  13. Well I can answer number three for you to start. If your meaning something like a cave, no, not possible with direct GPSR coverage. For a GPSR to get coordinates you have to have direct line of sight for the GPSR to read data from the satellites.

As for number two. I think that most peopleare using old ammo cans or tupperware. the climate and conditions will dictate that as much as anything else.
