  1. That seems to be the case now, but last week, they were both Amazon products. They must have sold out in their store. But they are still different part numbers. The -02 number is the one on the Garmin website and I got a Garmin packaged -12 part number. Seem to be the same product though. Thanks, dhoenich
  2. I'm not sure what you mean by that. You can see the detailed maps on your GPS or desktop PC. The road maps are very detailed (although sometimes out of date). I found the problem with that. I needed to select View GPS map detail to see it all on the PC. It would download the maps and they were on the GPSr but I couldn't see them in the mapsource screen. When I used that option running from disc, I only saw the ones I had downloaded. But, when I installed it all to my hard drive and changed the registry, they all show up fine. Thanks, dhoenich
  3. OK, here's what I got. Looks like it is TOPO 3.02 discs. The package from Garmin does have the -12 part number though and the Mapsource version was 4.09. Don't know why it's a new number, but it is cheaper. I'm not as happy with the program as I thought I'd be though. Doesn't appear that you can see the detailed maps unless you put them on the GPSr. Just has a general base map of major roads even though all the info is on the discs. (Well, on the hard drive now...) I knew it didn't auto route, but I was hoping for a little more than most of the roads being named road. It should be great for hiking, and I use my Delorme SA hooked up to the GPSr for times I need to navigate in the city, so it's not so bad.
  4. I couldn't tell any difference either. I ordered it and will report what I get. Thanks, dhoenich
  5. Does anyone know what the difference between these two MapSource TOPO US programs are? http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10215-12-...p;s=electronics http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004Z0C...7328611-2904062 They are both listed as Garmin Mapsource TOPO US discs, but one is $80 and the other is $68 (both new).
  6. You ARE downloading your PQs as .gpx and not .loc , correct? This might help GSAK Answer On the log page, the date has a drop down and you can select the different logs there. That may be where your missing it. I noticed that last night when playing with it. I just got my Palm in yesterday and put in CM. Looks like it is going to be fun.
  7. So I will need to get both Mapsource and Metroguide for $100 or so each to do both? If I use Delorme's Topo 6.0, will it route with a laptop? It is supposed to load trail waypoints for hiking which will be good enough for now and saves me $100. I don't need to do auto routing on the Vista itself and won't be doing enough large scale hiking trips to worry about needing the topo maps on the GPS (yet). Thanks, Dennis Hoenich
  8. Yes, I bought the Vista with 24 Meg. I figured it would be enough to do what I want for now. I probably won't be loading many detailed city maps in, or maybe none. I mostly want to do some GC with the kids, but also use it for some Scout hikes marking waypoints and trails. I don't need autorouting on the unit, but if we are doing a family trip, I would like to connect it to my laptop and use it as the reciever only, and use the laptop for map displays and routing. If TOPO 6.0 can do this, I will pick it up. It can load waypoints for trails. I just don't know if I can use it for laptop navigation with the Vista. (My Palm V shipped today and I should have it Saturday. Then I hope I've done enough reading to go paperless with Cachemate and the GSAK, but that will be a whole nother problem) Thanks, Dennis Hoenich
  9. I asked this in another thread, but it may not have been as related as it should have... I'm brand new to geocaching. I got an Etrex Vista last week and have found 8 caches in the area in 2 trips with the kids. I have also started looking at other TOPO and navigation software and am confused between Mapsource, Topo 6.0, and Street Atlas, and others. I would like in car navigation with my laptop for trips. I would also like trails since I have boys in scouts and we do some hiking. Looks like Mapsource will give me TOPO maps, allow me to download maps to GPS, but will not do navigation from laptop and route planning for trips. Street Atlas has no TOPO, but will do in car navigation with my GPS, and download .loc and .gpx files if I get the Plus version. Topo 6.0 seems to be a superset of Street Atlas and lets me do all the in car nav, waypoint management, but no downloadable maps. Should I get a cheap version of SA for trips and something else for hiking? I am familiar with Street Atlas. My father uses it when traveling with their little Earthmate USB GPSr. I'm not perfectly happy with the interface. I just picked up a Palm V from ebay today so if Topo 6.0 is the same maybe that would be my best bet and then I would go paperless. Any thoughts? Dennis Hoenich
