  1. With great fanfare, the “Treasure” feature was announced—a fantastic new addition, new rules, and all that… but in the end, it’s just another souvenir with a slightly different approach. If such a new feature is being introduced, why not fine-tune it properly before launch?

For example, when I click on the magnifying glass to check what I still need to complete, I see many caches I’ve placed myself (in other words - that I own). Everyone (except, apparently, Groundspeak and whoever coded this) knows that you can’t log your own caches. And that’s just one of the many issues.

With the premium membership fee increase, it would be nice if newly introduced features were properly polished—let alone the fact that the system still has plenty of bugs. For instance, when someone sends me a message, it remains marked as unread on my phone when I read it on my computer, and vice versa. And that’s just one of many little “glitches” that persist. When I want to set up cache notifications, I have to do it individually for each one — so I end up with a crazy list of multiple notifications for each area. Is it that hard to improve this? When preparing a cache for publication, I can enter GPS coordinates in multiple formats, but if I edit it later, I’m forced to use a predefined format. Otherwise, the system acts like it doesn’t understand and rejects it. And the list of issues goes on…

It wouldn’t hurt to introduce some tools for cache owners. For example, when creating multiple caches, why not allow the use of templates? Or even generate a list of GC codes where owners can enter default coordinates, set universal attributes, add standard (universal) text, and apply universal waypoints — then just fine-tune each cache separately. A cloning tool for recurring events would also be helpful. But I guess that would be asking too much, right? 😏

As for the “Treasures”—for those who enjoy souvenirs, all this means is that you just need to gather a ton of caches and then check a table to see what order to log them in. Extra work for no real reason—worth it? Well, beats me ..

Oh well… I guess I just had to write this. Because when I checked the fillter (treasures) with the possibilities that  I can log, and geocaching showed me a list of my own caches (which, by definition, cannot be logged), it naturally annoyed me. 😆

  2. Am I to understand that any cache where I have physically signed the logbook will be automatically deleted simply because a Google Map was used to solve the puzzle? So, for example, if the puzzle includes an exponential or quadratic equation and I don’t calculate it on paper but instead use, say, a smartphone, will the solver be disqualified for taking a more leisurely route, and will the log also be deleted? I had assumed that the only condition for a log to be accepted was that it is physically signed in the cache—regardless of whether the coordinates appeared in a dream, a friend advised me, or I used another method.

If the reviewer had seen a problem, they should have canceled, locked, or outright deleted the cache immediately instead of waiting to see what would happen and then, with pleasure, deleting the logs of anyone who dared to log an archived cache.

I thought the only rule was to be physically signed in the logbook - the end.

  3. It’s definitely a bug (or human error?) related – just not sure where else to post it.

    Dear Groundspeak Support Team,

I am writing to express my deep concern and frustration regarding the recent deletion of my log on cache GCA5WGK “Cizmele de șapte Poste”. Last year, I successfully found this cache in Poland with friends. Today, I received an email notifying me that my log had been removed. When I attempted to access the cache, it was no longer available —only my log remains visible at https://www.geocaching.com/live/log/GL1CYX8CM. No reason for this deletion was provided.

    Key Points:

    1. Archived Cache Status:

Although the cache was archived when we planned our trip, there was no log present. As far as I am aware, no rule prohibits the logging of archived caches. In fact, many geocachers specialize in this practice, and dedicated bookmark lists exist to support it. I have even previously logged an FTF on a cache reported as lost by its owner (cache GC4W7HG log GLDNEARC), only for my friends and me to locate it later after some 50 minutes of searching.

    2. Inconsistencies in Cache Management:We planned our geocaching trip in Poland with the expectation that the cache, although archived at the time of planning, was valid for logging. To our surprise, when we attempted to log an FTF, we discovered that the cache already contained numerous logs (logbook).

    3. Suspicious Handling and Lack of Transparency:

I am perplexed by the fact that my log was deleted—and, more alarmingly, the reviewer went as far as completely removing the cache from the archive. In standard practice, even if a cache is not fully active, its GC code is typically accompanied by a visible name in the URL (even if a DNF message is displayed). In this instance, only the GC code appears, which suggests that someone deliberately attempted to erase evidence. This raises several concerns:

Why was the cache published at all if there was a known issue?

If the cache was problematic, why was it not removed immediately?

Alternatively, why wasn’t the logging locked (as is customary for older webcams and similar caches)?

My primary complaint is that I am being penalized for an error that appears to stem from improper cache approval or oversight by the reviewer. Had the problem been identified sooner, the cache should have been immediately removed or the logging appropriately locked, allowing us to adjust our plans accordingly.

I respectfully request a thorough explanation of the reasoning behind deleting my log and immediately rectifying the situation. I have attached a screenshot of my log as evidence for your reference (just in case it also disappears).

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to your swift response.

    Yours sincerely,

  4. When I try to add an event to my calendar, I click on the calendar icon next to the geocache, select “Add,” choose the Outlook icon, and receive an Error 500 (see attached screenshot).

Correct behavior: After clicking the Outlook calendar option, I should be prompted to save a .VCS file and choose its location.

Current behavior: I receive an Error 500 instead of the save prompt.

This issue occurs only with certain events; others work as expected.

Example of an event causing the issue:

  5. How can I quickly change the final coordinates for many caches on Geocaching? I have some data in GeoGet, others in Excel, etc. My current process involves getting the data into GeoGet, exporting it to the cloud, loading it into my iPhone (using the Cachly app), and then using the app’s import function to update the final coordinates. However, this process is slow; if the app crashes, I must restart everything and start the import again.

Is there a more efficient way to import final coordinates directly? Planning trips on a computer map is so much easier than on a mobile device. Are there any tips or tools for a faster bulk/batch update of final coordinates? thx :)

Maybe its been fixed, as I can see a retrieve option.

i cant .. Safari browser .. actually its a bit complicated

I was just about to grab it, but it was grabbed by a friend (instead of discovered), she was a few seconds faster and I got error.. so I reloaded the page and now I can only see "post a note" or "discover" but cant grab it

I think the GC should downgrade to the previous version, its one bug after another ..

  7. When you want to add an image to the listing, not only do you encounter the error as described HERE, but you also have to be quite patient.

    1) you need to click EDIT listing

2 ) now you have to scroll down (all the way) and click "add picture to the gallery"

    3) now you can choose your picture and add it (as per the bug, mentioned above)

And here is a problem: in the old way of listing, you could continue adding more and more pictures to the listing .. but in this "new design" it kicks you out after you upload a picture. So that you have to go through steps 1 to 3 again and again and again .. depending on how many pictures you need to add .. who the hell came out with it .. this is so far probably the worst design I have seen .. or are you suggesting we should stop inserting images while creating caches? It's one after another ...

  8. When adding a new image (uploading while creating geocache/event) to the listing, it shows an error (can't add it, PNG, JPG, etc), but as I found out, there is a simple "trick" to it .. just hit the button "rotate 90°" and hit it 4 times to rotate the image by 360° and it "fix" whatever the problem was and the image is accepted

  9. after all those years - would be possible to fix (upgrade) the way we work, witch coordinates .. not sure if I should call it bug or feature request

just look at google maps (or any major online map system) .. you can use any of the following

    - N 49°6.21858', E 17°12.95968'
    - N 49°6.21858' E 17°12.95968'

    - N 49° 6.21858' E 17° 12.95968'
    - 49°6'13.115"N, 17°12'57.581"E

    - 49.1036431N, 17.2159947E

    etc.

Doesnt matter the spacing, comma in the middle, or different versions of GPS settings .. it can work with it .. SO I AM QUITE CURIOUS WHILE GEOCACHING CANT .. AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS .. ACCEPT THAT????

for example if you are creating cache/even it can work with something like N 49°6.21858', E 17°12.95968' but when you EDIT you have to follow the exact form N 49° 06.224 E 017° 12.972 (N "gap" 49 "gap" 06.224 "gap and no comma in between" E "gap" 017 "gap" 12.972) and you have to follow it exactly .. seriously??? after all those years and you couldn't fix that?

  10. would it be possible to create some sort of templates for CITO/EVENT? I organize some CITO/Events on a yearly basis, while others do a few times a year, and would be nice to have some sort of templates to use (perhaps part of Premium)?

The problem is not creating the listing (that I can easily copy and just adjust a few lines here and there) but it is bothering to copy all the waypoints (several parking points, etc), attributes, etc .. shouldn't be too difficult to have some, right?

    Hello,

since Groundspeak won't show us the Adventure Lab caches on the standard map it would be very nice if one could browse for them at https://labs.geocaching.com/.

It is a bit frustrating to just see then on the phone and also makes it a bit difficult to plan your trips.

this is quite tired some .. for example there are 2 or more labs in the same general area, so as you go, you need to leave one advanture, enter a different one find the place, log it and agan .. would be nice to see and log them all from the map, without the need of swithching between adventures ..

also, it would be nice, if the IOS app would stop killing iTunes .. whenever I listen music, and start adventure lab it stops the music .. is there any lab with sound??

  12. That's a really good point. But some of the other questions GC (or any potential developer) has to ask are:

    1) How many geocachers are Windows Mobile users?

    2) How many would pay for an app?

    3) As GC already built a huge business without WinMo, (a) how many potential customers do they gain by explicitly supporting an app for it? And (:( how many do they lose by not supporting it?

    4) How easy would it be to (a) develop and ( market the application?

I'm guessing Groundspeak asked questions 1/2/3 more than once, and always thought the numbers too small. And while Tom's app answers 4(a) -- it's possible to do; it perhaps diminishes 4(B) because he gives it away for free.

    1) just search the owners of mobiles .. as an example http://www.geocaching.com/reviews/gps_htc

    - EG HTC Touch Diamond (1416 Owned) / HTC Kaiser (1220 Owned) / etc .. I would bet that most of these are still running the WM .. don't remember who else (not just HTC) makeing WM devices, but I bet there are also some

    2) I would ... don't know about others

    3) sometimes people take out friends, and they starts to like it (got few of those) and some them decide to pay .. if you cut of these folks, they got no one to take out ..

    4) can't you just negotiate with the developers of already existing apps? with the freeware apps it should be easier to negotiate as the authors are already doing it for free

  13. Also since my phone is my only geocaching devise I will not be able to return the trackables I have until the app or something similar start working
    You don't own a computer?

I log -most- of my finds in the field from my phone, but if I ever need to edit a log later or drop a tracackable I just do it from my computer at home.

that is the beauty that I not only can pick up trackable, but also log it down as I go. yes I do use computer, but mainly for fun (statistics). What I love about XXX is not just the possibility to look around any time and anywehere, but also that I can log all trackable and drop it anywhere I like. basically I have no more need to use computer.

now the situation is changed, I have to use PQ, and when I got home I am literally forced to turn the computer on and do all the work (log, etc) on the computer.

and why all the screaming? the issue is that so far as I have found out this XXX app is the only one that is easy to use, and do everything I need. I haven't found any other that I could use as a replacement. just give me app that would do all that is required and I will "shut-up"...

  14. In case some of you have totally missed it - there is at least some development work for winmo - the platform is NOT abondoned.

    http://live.geocaching.com

I already tried, but has lots of bugs, a very small number of features and isn't updated since 10/02/2009

I agree that is just a piece of junk, unfriendly to use, and ... well I would expect a lot more from version 0.98 while XXXX is 0.2.35.35 and is a lot better, user friendly and ... well I could add a lot more, but you will most-likely moderate this message so why to waste my time :-D
